Re: [Trisquel-users] Who of this community honestly runs Trisquel GNU/Linux?
I run it on my 2010 Toshiba Netbook along with a wifi dongle purchased from Think Penguin. I have Peppermint 8 on my other two systems.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Debian Jessie released
This made me a little paranoid about SystemD https://ma.ttias.be/whats-new-systemd-2015-edition/ Specifically "auditing: implemented for when your application needs to be NSA approved (that appeared to be the main reason, Lennart himself said he's not a big fan of it). Can log all system calls made to /etc/passwd etc to the audit log. Auditing is integrated with journald, audit-tools to read the logs have been improved."
Re: [Trisquel-users] my family want me to install non-free software
If I were doing this for family I would install as few non-free packages as possible and then load the system up with Free Software. Sure it's not ideal but it's easier to convert people to Free Software when they've been using a mostly free system. This way you get them hooked on Free Software philosphy and eventually they'll stop using flash and other non-free options over time.
[Trisquel-users] Expandable or adjustable panel seperator
Hi Everyone, Is there a way to add an adjustable separator to the Trisquel 7 panel? I'd like to add a transparent gap between the menu dropdown and my application shortcuts. The separator provided is simply a 1px bar and it can't be made transparent or customized. Thanks in advance,
Re: [Trisquel-users] non-free sw on websites
I think of it this way, Facebook and I presume Google track users when they're logged out and not even on their sites through all sorts of code that we can't see or opt out of. http://www.cnet.com/news/facebook-we-do-track-logged-out-users-but-trust-us/#!
[Trisquel-users] Penguin Wireless N USB Adapter Love it!
Hi everyone, I thought I'd take a moment to share my experience with my new Wifi adapter that I recently purchased. https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/penguin-wireless-n-usb-adapter-gnu-linux-tpe-n150usb I'm using a System 76 Lemur Ultra (2012) and like most of their products the Wifi is Intel Centrino which is not very freedom friendly. Anyway, I digress. The Penguin adapater worked right out of the bag. Trisquel 7 reconized it immediately and the range is comprable to my onboard card. It handles bandwidth almost as well as the onboard card and it's tiny design is a huge plus. If you're not using Trisquel on your laptop because it relies on non-free WiFi drivers give the adapter a shot.
Re: [Trisquel-users] This time I really am leaving Trisquel
You can't blame Trisquel for not running on an ASUS K751. Before purchasing that system up you could have considered building a cheap desktop using freedom friendly hardware; futhermore, a usb wifi adapter is an option. Don't blame Trisquel for lack of propietary support, That's a feature and one that I appreciate and honestly the only reason I choose it over other distributions.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Nouveau Full HD tutorial?
I'll give this a shot. Thanks Calinou.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Nouveau Full HD tutorial?
Thanks Chris, I'll do that. In the meantime I'm running Trisquel on my lappy.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Nouveau Full HD tutorial?
I'll keep hunting; for now I can either remove the card or bypass it. Luckly my other computer is System 76 laptop and I just purchased a USB WiFi adapter to solve my issue with that system.
[Trisquel-users] Nouveau Full HD tutorial?
Hi everyone, My Nvidia GTX750ti works with Nouveau but only at 1024x768 and a few lower resolution options. My monitor supports a native resolution of 1920x1080 (1080p HD) Can anyone point me to a tutorial (if one exists) to adding resolution options to Nouveau? I'm using Trisquel 7 but am new to using the Nouveau driver as I previously just relied on Intel HD support.
Re: [Trisquel-users] If you're looking for a Trisquel compatible desktop machine...
Build your own desktop using parts that are known to work with GNU/Linux (specifically libre). For instance I run Trisquel 6 on my Intel 2500k Sandybridge desktop with a ASUS motherboard and misc components. It's connected via ethernet so wifi isn't an issue.
Re: [Trisquel-users] A laptop earns FSF Respects Your Freedom certificate
Are i3, i5 and i7 processors of any generation not able to be endorsed?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Getting someone to switch to Trisquel
I had been using GNU/Linux for 2 years before I discovered Trisquel. I eased into it after I became less reliant on propietary software. By the time I discovered Trisquel the transition wasn't a big deal since I knew the alternatives to flash and various codecs.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Manually Compiling a Newer Kernel
Thanks everyone, @Cyberhawk Mainly I'm just doing it for the experience. I enjoy hacking my system. Who knows it might update some of my IvyBridge support or SSD performance.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Manually Compiling a Newer Kernel
Thanks cyberhawk. I wasn't aware of the libre kernels.
[Trisquel-users] Manually Compiling a Newer Kernel
If I decided to compile a new kernel would that also activate non-free components that shouldn't be running in Trisquel. I'm pretty sure the answer is yes and therefore I shouldn't consider it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] My updates are broken
have you tried # apt-get dist-upgrade I've had packages held back in the past and for whatever reason (I think a kernel upgrade) this fixed the problem. please correct me if I'm wrong.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Mac Workstations - I wish they were free software friendly
I couldn't disagree more, linking to a site as evidence to prove an argument in favor of free software is no different. If we're so enlightened by freedom why should we sensor our posts in any way?
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Mac Workstations - I wish they were free software friendly
Exactly, and I'd add that having this discussion and linking to propietary sites only helps prove an argument in favor of free software. I for one prefer building my own desktop.
Re: [Trisquel-users] On the conversion of a Macbook Pro
If brightness keys don't work by default try adding # sudo apt-get install xbacklight then you can manually set your hot keys to raise and lower the brightness. http://linux.die.net/man/1/xbacklight
Re: [Trisquel-users] Thunderbird crashes when added to list of startup applications
I'm running XFCE. I keep thunderbird open at all times and therefore it boots at restarts too. I haven't had any issues. I'd suggest trying to recreate the problem in another desktop environment and see if it's specific to your desktop environment.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Pianobar & Pandora
Both good points, it's too bad Pandora keeps changing their authentication keys. Pianobar is such a great application but the trisquel repositories can't keep up with the updates. I'll have to hunt for a PPA.
[Trisquel-users] Pianobar & Pandora
If I managed to get Pianobar to actually function properly and actually use it to listen to Pandora Radio am I violating the spirit of free software? (the current version in the repositories is outdated by at least one generation and there is an error with the TLS handshake.) In the meantime I'm enjoying libre.fm in Rhythmbox.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Brightness
Assuming you just need to control the LCD or LED brightness try the package xbacklight and just manually set up the function keys in your keyboard settings. http://linux.die.net/man/1/xbacklight
Re: [Trisquel-users] Richard M. Stallman's 60th birthday
It wouldn't hurt for RMS to take some courses in public speaking :D
Re: [Trisquel-users] Idea: Xfce as classic DE for Trisquel 7?
XFCE would get my vote, Using Gnome Classic just makes things feel old.
Re: [Trisquel-users] YouTube Large Screen Choppy and slow...
Take the embed code from most YouTube videos, open gedit and save the document as a html document and open it in your browser. If you don't have Gnash enabled it will default to html5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsJKP3_wUgU
Re: [Trisquel-users] After version 6, Trisquel is moving to LTS only releases.
I'd prefer Trisquel release a solid LTS based based distribution than trying to catch up with Canonical. In the end we love Trisquel for what it is. The best GNU/Linux distribution available and I honestly think making it based off of LTS and releasing some security updates as well as other fixes during a 2 year cycle is a great idea.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 6 Officially Out; yes- really this time!
I'm installing Trisquel 6.0 right now onto my USB stick :D Clean install all the way.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Various problmes on a new installation
Perhaps kernel is older then the laptop and the trackpad doesn't have drivers yet. Have you tried the alpha version of 6? My guess it will fix the trackpad problem but since it's Alpha you will likely run into other glitches.
Re: [Trisquel-users] dual boot with windows 7
My bad I thought you were installing 5.5 You could try the mini installer, that might be a text based installer. http://devel.trisquel.info/makeiso/iso/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Squeezing battery time
If you're using a mouse you could try disabing the trackpad as well. I'm actually sad to hear jupiter-applet retired that was my favorite laptop tool. You could try XFCE or LXDE as your desktop environment it it might provide some minor power savings.
Re: [Trisquel-users] dual boot with windows 7
If I recall I had the same problem awhile back. the installer tries to connect to a server to download something and it just stalls. I actually solved the problem using the net install method. It's a problem with the Ubuntu based installer that affects some computers.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Various problmes on a new installation
Hi Matsetes, Try installing gnome-tweak-tool # apt-get install gnome-tweak-tool That will allow you to modify Gnome 3's desktop settings including desktop icons.
Re: [Trisquel-users] wifi usb adapter suggestions
Thanks Chris, I'll pick one up and be sure to click through Trisquel's website when I do.
[Trisquel-users] wifi usb adapter suggestions
Hi everyone, I'm using a System76 Lemur Ultra with an Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235 which of course is not freedom friendly hardware. Can anyone suggest a usb wifi adapter? Thanks in advance.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Gnome Shell Themes
forgot the attached screen shot. the icons in the panel is the same only smaller
Re: [Trisquel-users] Mark Shuttleworth had a vasectomy for free sofwtare
Ubuntu has done a lot of good for the GNU/Linux ecosystem. It was my first distribution and eventually through that I discovered the FSF which in turn brought me here to Trisquel Trisquel has taken out all of Ubuntu's nasty bits and built a far better and stable distribution from the ashes.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Unetbootin not in repository
Oh, I didn't try the startup disk creator. Doh. Thanks Lembas
Re: [Trisquel-users] How do you use Gnome Shell?
As a web designer I appreciate the ability to add and new shell themes and edit them via a simple CSS stylesheet :D
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Installer for 5.5
Arrg I forgot to mention that I was installing via USB. That's got to be the issue.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Installer for 5.5
I did hit skip but the installer was stalled or froze. I used the net install to bypass the problem. Thanks for the replies everyone.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Installer for 5.5
Screenshot mentioned above attached here.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Panel Frustration
I suggest XFCE and just style it to fit your needs or to look close to Gnome Classic. With Gnome already installed on your system it's actually easier to get running. Notifications work, Your panel or panels can be customized any way you like. Later, you can always go back and start removing the gnome packages you don't want. of Course LXDE and KDE are also available in the repos.
Re: [Trisquel-users] XFCE Trisquel
Ocra seems to work in Abrowser on XFCE no problem. However, Desktop interactions don't seem to work (by default anyway). I quickly opened up LibreOffice Writer and it didn't work with Orca. It will just take a little trial and error, tweaking preferences etc.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Support Trisquel review suggestion for the Linux Action Show
I started using Trisquel in part because of the publicity around the Free Software Foundation and GNU. (and of course the drama around RMS)
Re: [Trisquel-users] XFCE Trisquel
Of course it's as easy as installing XFCE and since you have Gnome already included most of the Theme options are already there. Backgrounds, Trisquel icon set, Trisquel Theme etc. # apt-get install xfce4
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using Trisquel 100% of the Time
I've only been using Trisquel for a few weeks now. I was amazed how YouTube videos actually played via Gnash the open source alternative to flash. I enabled html5 video and it's flawless when the uploader has it available. I've used OggConvert (to convert video and audio to ogg vorbis formats. I've also used Sound Converter to batch export my mp3 library to ogg vorbis it's wonderful. I'm currently exporting a video from Pitivi and I recorded the audio via my phone as I don't have a microphone attached to my computer. http://youtu.be/k83jBtUoAgA Trisquel is the first FSF approved distribution I can honestly say does everything I need my computer to do. It's stable, responsive and amazing. I've also done a few unorthodox things. Added XFCE 4 as I prefer it to GNOME I did a full install on a USB flashdrive and it works on my computer wonderfully and is fully functional.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Stallman on the Linux Action Show
Additionally a web designer such as myself could continue to work using only Free and Open Source software. The glitch is when we work for employers who institutionally use closed source software. I've been politely pushing to replace our current website updating method towards WordPress which should also allow me to use Trisquel at work via a USB Flashdrive. Sneaky Sneaky.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Codecs MP3, AVI, MPEG etc.
Thanks aloniv, I've been converting my files to Ogg Vorbis audio and video formats anyway which removes any need for silly licenses.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Codecs MP3, AVI, MPEG etc.
Thanks icarolongo. that was exactly what I was looking for. .
