Great comments onpon4, people tend to not think of games as programs, this is a common problem. Thanks for the link, I have not seen that before. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Best way to present Trisquel to people
In my opinion, the average non-linux user could care less where the software came from, who made it, who owns it, or how much it costs. The average user cares about weather or not a program will work and if their hardware is compatible. In addition people are afraid of change so most will be reluctant to make the switch, especially to an 100% Libre distro which poses a few extra challenges (especially when it comes to wifi, etc). This reluctance to change is a problem that many distributions face in getting more users. I would even venture to say that this is precisely the reason why many distributions are not 100% libre, they are willing to bend a couple of morals, include a couple of proprietary drivers, blobs, and programs, for the sake of usability. I am not a radical anti-nonfree software advocate. But I choose to use only free software for personal reasons, and encourage others to do the same. My point is, at the end of the day Trisquel is a hard sell for people who are new to GNU/Linux, and it is even a hard sell for people who are veterans of GNU/Linux. I think Trisquel sells itself. There is truly a feeling of Liberation in knowing that you are able to use a computer without any constraints on it. That is why I use it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Mini on Asus Eee 900
I had a similar issue with the mini version on an old P4 Dell. Did you try typing startx into the console window? This did the trick for me on the live CD. I know this is a pretty basic fix and I am not trying to insult your intelligence! Just want to make sure you didn't try the obvious first! 99% of the problems that I encounter are completely obvious. :) Best of luck, Lev
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Mini on Asus Eee 900
Hahaha! I am glad to hear that it worked. :) Don't feel embarassed I have spent hours trying to fix various issues in the past and when I finally got to the answer it was usually something obvious and simple. Enjoy your Trisquel-mini! Just a quick question though does the wifi work out the box on your eee-pc? Or at all?

This was a nightmare with the Course Smart software when I had to use it in the past. Luckily most of the companies that sell eBooks do give you a small grace period to make a return in case you are having system compatibility issues. In addition to ebooks, my school is really big on a lot of McGraw Hills web based homework and assignments which also require a bunch of proprietary plug in's its very annoying and I think it has a negative impact on learning.

It may be possible to design a non-x86 computer to be completely free although so far it appears there aren't any. The most recent version of a netbook that Stallman uses appears to include at least a graphics card dependent on non-free firmware. There isn't a propritary BIOS from my understanding. We offer the closest thing to 'completely free' you can get at the moment with X86 though. All of the critical chipsets (wifi, graphics, and similar) have drivers available which make that compatible with free software operating systems. None of our systems ship with a free BIOS however. We would like to ship with a free BIOS although that isn't likely to happen any time soon. Unfortunately porting coreboot (the free BIOS) is a non-trivial task. It has been done once for a laptop with government finances behind it. A few other models which had non-free dependencies have also had ports to them. Again- these weren't ideal for those using only free software. Right now this is as good as it gets. And for better or worse it is a huge improvment over what was available just a few short years ago. Thanks for the clarification - not a deal breaker, I was just curious. I just got a new laptop, but may check out the net-top you have... look forward to it! :)

Re: [Trisquel-users] Apple has really irked me with iCloud and iWork regarding OpenDocument
I am an apply convert - and I used iWork for quite some time. I have always been frustrated with the blatant incompatibility that the program has with anything other than iWork. At my school we are forced to use MS word for various statistical applications (Excel + Macros) because the professor is obsessed with preventing plagiarism so the formatting that he created gets messed up when you use it with either iWork or LibreOffice. What I found even more frustrating than the fact that iWork is incompatible with everything -- even MS word for Apple seems to be incompatible with MS word for Windows - its the most frustrating thing in the world. I think my experience has showed me the urgent need for an open standard. Because the last time I checked when you save a file in .odf, you can open it on BSD, Linux, Windows, Mac, and pretty much anything else -- and it will look exactly how you left it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Apple has really irked me with iCloud and iWork regarding OpenDocument
I agree and its a real shame that this is the way things are. The sad thing is that the subject we are working on (Physics Lab) is interesting, and useful. We are using Excel in ways that I didn't even know existed. But there is absolutely no reason why this cannot be done in any other program. It's a shame because maybe some student will walk out of this class thinking that this is the norm, and when they become professors and have students of their own they will follow suit. We will be in this endless cycle forever. If or when I ever become a professor - I will insist that my students have the opportunity to submit their work in any format that they choose, with any program that they choose to use. I think that having this sort of vendor lock in destroys innovation and creativity. This is especially true in the sciences - and its terrible because in the U.S. that is what our current generation of students is lacking the most. This quarter, I am being forced to use SO much proprietary software that no matter how hard I try there is no alternative. There are alternative programs that can do the same things that I am doing, but for some reason the professors insist that we use the proprietary versions. Besides MS Office, there is Mathematica (similar to MATLAB) -- which can easily be replaced by Octave or SAGE. This would save students and the school a crapload of money (just look at the cost of one license). Also there are a bunch of proprietary plugins (Chem-Draw) which completely suck and are buggy beyond belief (can be replaced with several other programs, Kalzium or Avogadro), and then of course Flash, Flash, Flash and more Flash. I am just glad that I have not been forced to "buy" an ebook from CourseSmart yet ... if that ever happened I would begin to look for a new University.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Tablets
I would get one today if it was around. It would be great to have a tablet running Trisquel! As far as features go, I would definantly want an SSD, wifi obivously, and a long battery life (at least 5 hours). @Magic Banana - Thank you for your reply - Sorry about the mix up - I am actually pretty new to Mathematica. I did try out Maxima before - it works well. Hey Lembas, Thanks for the link! this is great information -- unfortunately even when this computer had Windows on it, it would max out at around 2.5 hours so surprisingly Trisquel does just as well! Re: [Trisquel-users] Why should I continue with Triaquel 5.5 or anything related to it?
I just saw watched this episode of the LAS for the first time last night and I was really annoyed with Chris and Matt's analysis of the distro. I think they kind of missed the point of what we are trying to do here. I was especially annoyed by Matt's comment when he said "I tried to watch a You Tube Video and Gnash Sucks." Ok -- Gnash is what it is, but saying that is sucks is never going to fix the situation, its not going to draw more developers to work on the project, its not going to make it work any better. Also, Chris discussed how Trisquel doesn't really acknowledge the role of Ubuntu in our success. How often does Canonical go around praising Debian for all of their successes? I think the LAS is cheesy, and I doubt the credentials of these "expert analysts" on the show. Compared to every other 100% free distribution I think that Trisquel is far ahead in terms of visual appeal, functionality, and community. I think that should have been the focus of the discussion, not how gnash sucks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why should I continue with Triaquel 5.5 or anything related to it?
onpon4 - I watched the RMS one when it came out and it was really annoying to watch. I think RMS can be a little overwhelming to some people, but despite his hard philosophy he has contributed so much to the community. No one ever wants to say it but where would Linux be without GNU? I think that a Linux tv show or podcast is a great idea, but the folks at LAS execute this very poorly.

Re: [Trisquel-users] GNI/LinuxFest Northwest
I am trying to decide if I should go to this one or Libre Planet -- I think both would be very interesting events and I understand that they have different goals. But as much as I would love to go to both I think that I will only have the resources to go to one or the other. Which one do you think will be more productive for Trisquel?
[Trisquel-users] User to Contributor
I saw this article via the GNU planet and I think it brings up some interesting points that are relevant to our community. How do we better fill that gap and encourage people to take the leap from using to contributing? When I first came to GNU/Linux I had no idea what I was doing and used primarily relied on forums for support. Some communities were very welcoming and helpful while others were hostile and exclusive. As time went on I stopped asking questions and began to answer them. It felt good to know that even that small amount of contribution was making a difference. Every distro has a "How can you help" section on their website, but from my own experience it can be difficult to really get involved. Especially when you are new and don't necessarily know what to do. There are countless ways that someone can make a difference, but maybe we can do a better job showing them how.

Re: [Trisquel-users] I got a response regarding Linux Libre in Ubuntu from Canonical
I agree with the notion that the libre kernel should be distributed to as many places as possible, but at the same time depending on how much time and resources that would take I would hate to see less attention devoted to refining trisquel and being spent on providing a kernel that may or may not be used on a big name distro.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Free as in Trisquel or as in Fedora ?
I agree with sirgazil, I applaud the efforts to make something free on all accounts. It is very difficult to have 100% free hardware, but when it comes to software, media, documentation -- this is something that we can control and I encourage others to do so.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Problem installing printer
If you do lsusb You should be able to see everything that is attached.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Free as in Trisquel or as in Fedora ?
That's the whole idea of copyleft -- you "patent" or "license" or whatever under a free license. So in the end you are still credited with the work and no one else can claim that it is their own, while preserving freedom.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why should I continue with Triaquel 5.5 or anything related to it?
As an add on to my previous rant -- when Chris says there is no mention of Ubuntu. This crystal clear diagram of "How Trisquel is Made" pretty much sums it up. I am not sure if he wants us to praise Ubuntu on every single page, but this is about as good of attribution as I can think of. https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/how-trisquel-made

Re: [Trisquel-users] is Debian GNU/Hurd free?
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hello, I would disagree with you completely. "Sometimes, free software is not enough." Free software is always enough. In addition, Stallman does not spend his time talking about how to get proprietary software and free software working together because he is spending all of his time on the more important issue of enabling the use of free software across the board. I do not think that this is censorship, and is certainly is not hurting any cause. GNU, FSF, and projects like this one are doing just fine.
