Re: [Trisquel-users] On the NSA targeting readers of Linux Journal as extremists
The U.S. Government is indeed a radical group conspiring to deprive citizens of Earth of their fundamental human right to free expression. An open letter to the NSA from the FSF: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2014/07/dear-nsa-privacy-fundamental-right-not-reasonable-suspicion

Re: [Trisquel-users] On the NSA targeting readers of Linux Journal as extremists
I'm very proud to be a GNU/Linux and Tor user. If the NSA believes that I'm an extremist, so be it. This just demonstrates that they are afraid of free and legal tools that may thwart (or at least slow) their illegal, unconstitutional practices as well as the free-thinking people that use them. Fascists' biggest fear is people that dare think for themselves.

I've had pretty good luck with Better World Books: http://www.betterworldbooks.com/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why block Tor even for browsing?
I've used Tor browser to view this forum for several months without issues (doing it right now!). I'm currently using Tor v0.2.4.18-rc (not the primary browser bundle - though not why that should make a difference). I don't have issues when using Iceweasel in TAILS either. The only issues I have are with financial sites (e.g. eBay, Paypal) that track and link user IP addresses with their accounts (which bugs me and makes me want to eliminate those accounts). I use abrowser for those for now.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is ethic really good argument for FLOSS?
Using proprietary software violates MY code of ethics, which is why I use free software. That fact that it works very well, is free of malware, etc. is really beside the point.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is ethic really good argument for FLOSS?
The existence of god/gods doesn't pass the laugh test. Religion is an activity for the weak-minded and the single biggest obstacle to human progress.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is ethic really good argument for FLOSS?
No. They are based on experience, observations of others, my own sense of logic and (at least to some extent) the law. Of course, laws and the experiences of others may be based in part on input from religion, but I have had not direct input from religion as I was (thankfully) shielded from this during childhood. I'm not an 'athiest', but rather a 'none.'
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is ethic really good argument for FLOSS?
The four freedoms are entirely consistent with my code of ethics. Pretty straightforward.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Dell printers
I had an old Dell 5150 inkjet printer that was recognized by and worked fine with Trisquel as late as 5.5. The printer died before I installed 6.0.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I hear the term free software less and less these days
I've had a running conversation with the head IT person at the school where I teach about proprietary vs. non-proprietary software (we don't discuss 'free' or even 'open source.' He understands my ethical concerns, doesn't necessarily and yet is far more accommodating than I expected. (or than he probably needed to be). I am able to use Trisquel in my teaching. It's great! The term 'free' is confusing and, quite frankly, I'm tiring having have to mention 'free as in freedom, not free burgers' (beer isn't age appropriate in my situation). It's absolutely time for FSF to adopt a different euphemism for 'free' as an aid to the conversation. I believe in the cause, but I also believe it's time to update the message as it's on its way to becoming a lost cause. (Sorry to be blunt). libredrs
Re: [Trisquel-users] Real-time audio spectrum analyzer
I subsequently found JAAA in the Trisquel software list and it's perfect for my needs (Grade 4 lesson about sound frequency). Thanks!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Real-time audio spectrum analyzer
Thanks. I need to analyze external sources (e.g., via microphone) for spectrum characteristics. I don't see that in Audacious. Unless I'm missing something...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Real-time audio spectrum analyzer
I'm using Trisquel 6.0. I assumed (apparently incorrectly) that the build script might know that it's based on a recent version of Ubuntu. Thanks!
[Trisquel-users] Real-time audio spectrum analyzer
I'm looking for a real-time audio spectrum analyzer. It looks like GNU Radio has this feature but I receive the following after attempting to install using the build-gnuradio script for Ubuntu: Installing prequisites...Your Ubuntu release must be at least 9.04 to proceed Any assistance (including suggestions for other software) will be appreciated. Thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Not getting the ability to upgrade
Just upgrade a machine from 5.5 to 6.0 using UM. Worked fine. Thanks!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Not getting the ability to upgrade
Trisquel 6.0 Upgrade now appears in my Update Manager, but after running through several installation steps, UM says that an upgrade is not available and returns the system to its original state. FYI.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Tablets
RMS' issue with cellular telephones goes well beyond the issue of software freedom. Using a cell phone (smart or not) also invites the invasion of one's privacy by the cellular service company as well as the government. My impression from his writings is that he wouldn't use one even if the software was completely free. The iPhone has so many ethical issues in terms of freedom (software, DRM, privacy, possible workers rights violations) that it isn't worthy of discussion in this forum. In this case, going without is definitely taking the ethical high ground. It really is a tough pill to swallow to go without using amazing hardware and support free software. I know RMS doesn't have a cell phone, because there isn't a free one. However, is someone with $900USD really going to go without when they can pick up an iPhone 4S today? The choice: lose-freedom or go without is much different than free or not free.
Re: [Trisquel-users] broadcom wireless not working on dell laptop
Also check out: http://www.h-node.org/ for other wireless USB adaptors that work with free software. I'm partial to the Netgear WG111v2. Really cheap (I keep a spare) and works great.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 5.5 Brigantia beta images ready for testing
Will I be able to upgrade from 5.0 to 5.5 without starting from scratch? What will I need to do when 6.0 comes along? How long will 5.0 receive support/updates after the 5.5 is released? Thanks for your help. libredrs
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wireless
It doesn't matter if it's one 'piece' or a thousand pieces of proprietary software. You have missed the point of running a truly free operating system like Trisquel. Providing assistance in installing proprietary drivers does not help the cause - at all. However, I like the assurance that every other piece of software running on my computer is Free, except for the stuff I put on there myself, not from the repositories.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Thoughts on Free Software
I'll bite (but no ranting)... I'm a professional research scientist (aquatic toxicology) and do all of my own data collection, sophisticated statistical analyses and interpretation. I'm decidedly NOT a hacker (although I do like to play around with the command line and admire a few hackers) - I really just need to get my work done. I use Trisquel (without ANY proprietary software or components) for all of my home and work computing. I'm also an advocate of personal freedom and view the use of ANY proprietary software as infringing on my freedom, for many of the reasons described by the Free Software Foundation. I won't use proprietary software. Quite frankly, I see only advantages to using free software: 1) Trisquel is quite stable and runs quickly on inexpensive computers. 2) I can now afford to own several computers, including the one in my office. The IT people at my college want nothing to do with my system and I'm quite happy to keep it that way. They leave me alone and I don't have to deal with their Macintosh or Windows systems, which are defective by design. 3) I spend far LESS time on housekeeping that I used to with Macintosh or Windows. I also experience far less downtime than my Windows counterparts, in particular. 4) Virtually all of the free software tools that I use for data analayses, desktop publishing etc. are equal to or better than what's available for Macintosh or Windows. They are far less buggy and updated more frequently. Many of them are also more elegant. I will never go back. 5) Did I mention that I can get my work done? That's what matters most. The size of the free GNU/Linux community is more than sufficient and (to anyone who is paying attention) has reached critical mass. If I run into difficulty or have a question, I can almost always find the answer and resolve it rather quickly and without a fuss. If my favorite free GNU/Linux system falls by the wayside or becomes dormant, I'll find another one that does the job. In summary, I can maintain one of my few remaining personal freedoms (sadly becoming more and more in short supply in the U.S.) and... get my work done. What more can you ask for? libredrs
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wireless
Will do. I actually thought I had purchased a v3, got it working and didn't realize for several weeks (when I looked at the box) that I had a v2.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wireless
Check out: http://www.h-node.org/ to determine if your wireless card will run with free software. If not, you can purchase very inexpensive USB wireless adaptors on eBay and the like. My built-in card didn't work, so I purchased a Netgear WG111v2 for US$8 shipped. It works great and was a small price to pay for my freedom. Good luck! libredrs
Re: [Trisquel-users] FSF mirror
No, I learned that the fsf mirror was down when I was notified of an update by Update Manager and it stalled while trying to download the packages. I then checked via apt-get update and saw that the mirror was unavailable. I'm curious more than anything - not concerned about having the latest update. I'm in New York, so fsf is just around the corner. :) Thanks, drs
Re: [Trisquel-users] FSF mirror
Are there alternate sites to the fsf mirror for updating Trisquel and download packages? Thanks, drs
