Re: [Trisquel-users] How to soundcloud?

Soundcloud has never played songs for me previously but now it does. Weird.

I'm using updated Trisquel 6.0 with abrowser 23.0, haven't tried any other
browsers yet.

I only have generic plugins installed, like Tree Style Tab.

On

the tracks are playing fine.

Screenshot shows the top track playing.

Can you post your console output of

Re: [Trisquel-users] Setting up a Trisquel box at a public library

2014-08-08 Thread overbackup4

I have set up GNU boxes for public use before (not for a library).

For public use I would recommend booting off an image rather than installing
to HD.

Could be a cdrom internal to the box, a USB key inside that the users cannot
access or a thin client booting from the network. This allows you to have a
known base start point with each boot and any rootkits/backdoors/etc are
scrubbed on each reboot. If persistent data is needed, place it on a separate
local or network drive away from the OS.

One of the security points to lockdown is the ctrl-alt-F combinations that
allow access to a login prompt. Remove these if you can.

Regarding the use of the box that you are setting up, does it really need
flash installed? If it is for research, wouldn't flash detract from this.
With enough sites pre-bookmarked or visible on the homepage of the browser,
you can direct users to quality information resources that do not require
flash (wiki etc).
Perhaps a physical sign next to it explaining that it is "For research use
only and some entertainment websites will not work" will cover you when flash
sites are not rendering.
I'd recommend making it known to the library staff that these sites will not
be available to users, and that they can advise users to use a home PC or
netcafe to look at entertainment based sites.

Yes, a .iso Live Image can be customised with the install/removal of programs
and changes to settings.

https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/customizing-trisquel-iso ( some steps are
optional )

and then that custom .iso image can be burnt to CD to make a liveCD or copied
to USB to make a liveUSB.

https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/how-create-liveusb

( * Data safety tip: double check the output-file if using dd to copy the iso
, to make sure it is the correct USB media )

-/-

A simpler approach to the above is to install/customise as regular to HD,
then backup the HD for use as a vanilla master image used to restore the box
periodically.

Clonezilla Live is one imaging tool that can backup/restore the image of the
HD.

Two years of Taranis and a year of Brigantia and no KPs or crashes, suspend
and hibernate work fine.

For me, instability in GNU/Linux usually points to hardware failures.

You can check your RAM with the ' memtest86+ ' package from memtest.org .

' fsck ' and ' badblocks ' will check the HD.

Cheap USB ports on laptops have caused errors for me before.
As root, you can do a rudimentary check with ' tail -f /var/log/syslog ' and
then jiggling the USB cables.

Trisquel is a solid build , thanks to all who put their effort towards making
this great free distro.

Re: [Trisquel-users] trisquel install hanging

2012-11-10 Thread overbackup4

My Trisquel 5.5 install hung recently.

Installing on a Lenovo G475 laptop with the standard 700mb Gnome CD, the
live-cd would boot fine. When double clicking on the desktop icon to install
Trisquel, the laptop would hang completely. No response to anything but
holding the power button.

The workaround for this was to download the NetInstall 25mb iso and install
from that in text mode.

This laptop freeze sounds like a different issue to your hang, but may be of
use to the devs or others trying to install on similar hardware.

Re: [Trisquel-users] What main problems, if any, have you found in transition to Trisquel?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Debian derivative

2012-12-14 Thread overbackup4

There is also release schedule to consider.

Ubuntu has a 6 month release schedule and a 2 year LTS release schedule.

This certainty of release times translates directly to Trisquel releases.

Debian's stable release schedule is " when it's ready " ( which is necessary
to make sure a complete release is made ) .

Tracking Debian Stable would mean much more erratic stable release times and
tracking Debian Testing would mean chances of app failure/crash creeping into
the Trisquel experience.

I think the Trisquel devs have made a fine choice to use Ubuntu as the
current base. This means the benefits of both Debian and Ubuntu's Free
Software packages are available to Trisquel users.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Free driver for the receipt printer Epson TM U 210PB

2012-12-23 Thread overbackup4

I set up a similar Epson receipt printer 2 years ago under GNU/Linux.

In that setup, the printer had no driver. The POS software only had a
setting to indicate which COM port the printer was on.

When I was trying to work out whether the printer was functioning, I used a
command similar to this:

echo "test test test" > /dev/ttyS1

and the receipt printer printed:

test test test

It seemed that it just took raw ASCII input and printed anything that came
down the cable.

This setup did not install the printer as a CUPS printer and there was no
driver installed.

You may be able to hack a CUPS dummy driver that pipes the ASCII input
straight to the printer ( perhaps with a little help from CUPS forums and IRC
)

Re: [Trisquel-users] Source access

2013-02-28 Thread overbackup4

It depends how you interpret "but hasn't made the source code available" .

Usually source code is available live-on-the-web or ftp and this is
preferred, so people can download and examine it with no waiting.

It is not a requirement of the GPL that source code be live, only obtainable.

This means 'available on request'.

If the author refuses a request to send a copy of the complete source code
that is under the free licence or they are uncontactable, the program is no
longer considered to be Free Software.

This paragraph is from the wikipedia GPL page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_GPL#Copyleft

Many distributors of GPL'ed programs bundle the source code with the
executables. An alternative method of satisfying the copyleft is to provide a
written offer to provide the source code on a physical medium (such as a CD)
upon request. In practice, many GPL'ed programs are distributed over the
Internet, and the source code is made available over FTP or HTTP. For
Internet distribution, this complies with the license.

Re: [Trisquel-users] GIMP crashes while saving

From your console output, it may be a plug-in causing problems.

Have you added any plug-ins to gimp?

You could try the following commands too. This will rename your gimp settings
directory so that the next time you run gimp it will recreate the directory
with all vanilla settings just like as if it was a new distro install.

% cd

% mv .gimp-2.6 .gimp-2.6_orig

% gimp -c --verbose

Then try to save a .png

to revert back to your original settings, use this line

% cd ; mv .gimp-2.6 .gimp-2.6_vanil ; mv .gimp-2.6_orig .gimp-2.6

Just to confirm, are you running gimp from the Trisquel repository? (
2.6.12-1ubuntu1.2 )

Can you run

% dpkg -l | grep gimp

and paste the versions of installed packages.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Information about Trisquel

2013-06-29 Thread overbackup4

I use a distro that I would be happy to recommend to other people.

My main checklist points for this are usability, .deb packaging and
stability.

Trisquel can be viewed as just Ubuntu with non-free removed, but it is so
much more than that.

Default Interface http://i.imgur.com/1uddJH9.png

The default Trisquel interface is the cleanest and most concise PC UI that I
have used so far(several decades of GNU+Linux/mac/wind). The main points on
my UI checklist are a taskbar at the bottom of the screen, a main-button in
the bottom left, a clock in the bottom right and a main menu that includes
programs, add/remove programs, settings and shutdown/logoff. These are the
immediate places I look for these tools/options and where the majority of
novices would too.

Trisquel tracks stable releases, so a new user will not have bleeding-edge
crash issues.

Trisquel has a great desktop layout and stability that I would be confident
recommending to a novice PC user.

Other considerations are the community and a commitment to a fully free
distro.

Thanks to everyone who contributes to Trisquel.
