Re: [Trisquel-users] Running script at startup not working
Okso my ignorance got the best of me. Since I am using xmodmap in this script, I needed to run this in my .xsessionrc file. Thanks to all of you for you fast responses, I really appreciate it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Running script at startup not working
Didn't work I keep trying to just run this script in /etc/init.d, too. I run 'update-rc.d' on that script, and no errors come up. The link has been added successfully to my rc directories, too.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Running script at startup not working
The DISPLAY var is set to ':0'. When I look in my mail file, searching for CRON, this stands out: 'Unable to connect to X11 display. Is $DISPLAY set?'
Re: [Trisquel-users] Running script at startup not working
The script is for mapping ctrl to the space bar. I like to use this in all my areas of computing.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Running script at startup not working
Yes.. I have got this to work in Startup Applications, under Trisquels default session, but I mainly use i3. The script does not run in any other desktop environment using that method. For .bashrc, I'm pretty sure the script would only run when a terminal has been opened. Though, it has been a while since I have tested that. I'm going to give it a try actually. Thanks for that reminder.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Running script at startup not working
thanks, lembas
Re: [Trisquel-users] Running script at startup not working
thanks, ADFENO
[Trisquel-users] Running script at startup not working
I've been trying to run this script when the system turns on. I have tried multiple methods: init.d, rc.local, and now currently messing with crontab. This is what I have in my crontab file: * * * * * bash /home/user/Scripts/space_as_ctrl I was trying '@reboot' but wasn't working so i tried using '*' for the date fields. I can run this manually with no problem. It is also executable. Thanks for you help.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Hardware Parts
I'll take away your negative, this, to me, is a funny sarcastic remark.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Hardware Parts
Sorry for the original vagueness...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Hardware Parts
This page is pretty useful, i was also just wondering if there were other sources that were just as good (out of curiosity) https://h-node.org/videocards/catalogue/en
Re: [Trisquel-users] Hardware Parts
I have my lovely laptop from ministryfreedom :) I'm specifically looking for a DVI/HDMI/VGA Graphics Card.
[Trisquel-users] Hardware Parts
Looking for a good place for computer parts. Any recommendations? Specifically freedom-friendly? I will check h-node, too, but would like to hear from others on here. Thanks
Re: [Trisquel-users] Neovim
I thought so...I'd rather not. Thanks, onpon.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Neovim
Thanks. Since it is under the fsf directory, i'm assuming it wouldn't compromise user freedom. Neovim's homepage mentions the repo to add to ubuntu. Is this safe to do?
[Trisquel-users] Neovim
Is there a reason why neovim is not within Trisquel's repo? I see that it is available in Parabola's, and is listed in the FSF's directory of free software.
Re: [Trisquel-users] set openmailbox aliases?
I briefly looked, but have you gone to their forum? https://forum.openmailbox.org/index.php
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 Desktop Environment.
lodier, what desktop environment are you using?
Re: [Trisquel-users] x200 battery type
Thanks.
[Trisquel-users] x200 battery type
This laptop from Francis, does anyone know if the battery is the strongest type as far as what is provided for lenovo x200? http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?hide_menu_area=true&GroupID=460&Code=43R9255#techspecs I found this to be the strongest, but could not find any info on my own battery to compare. Tried e-mailing Francis, but no reply.
Re: [Trisquel-users] VGA display program?
The prez went great by the way! It was part of my research paper for my final. And it was actually on Free Software. While the class decided to present on the classroom computer with Microsoft Power-point, I plugged my x200 from ministry freedom in and presented. I made many aware of what they are missing out on, and even had many questions of interest after. It felt great to educate those who have been abused by their software.
Re: [Trisquel-users] VGA display program?
Hmmm, I typed 'xranr' but command not found...
Re: [Trisquel-users] VGA display program?
I will get back to you on that. Need to get to the projector to test that. Thanks Magic Banana.
Re: [Trisquel-users] VGA display program?
I want to know how to activate whatever takes care of the multi-screen display. If my laptop is already on and plug in the vga cable to the projector, nothing happens. ONLY when i turn the computer on with the vga cable plugged in is when the multi screen happens.
Re: [Trisquel-users] VGA display program?
Didn't see anything under displays, in Gnome My GUI is very minimal,as I use i3, but do have Gnome still installed if I need it for emergency. I have been trying to make more use of the command line/bash. Thanks for the other recommendations, though.
[Trisquel-users] VGA display program?
Was wondering what trisquel gnu/linux runs when a vga cable is plugged in to another device (monitor, projector, etc.) I am presenting some research and plan on plugging in to a projector. I tested it this morning in my classroom, and everything displayed properly, but the system must first start with the vga cable plugged in order to work. I ran 'ps aux' to look around for the program that runs to output the display, but did not have enough time find it. Help is much appreciated. -Scott
Re: [Trisquel-users] Does Richard Stallman have a protégé?
I apologize, root_vegetable. This is the second time that I made this mistake, as the 'Troll Hole' is for threads not pertaining to Trisquel/Free Software. I will make sure to not do it again.
[Trisquel-users] Does Richard Stallman have a protégé?
Long live RMS, of course, but I am curious about this. Anyone know?
Re: [Trisquel-users] New York Wants To Know: Have You Been Texting And Driving?
Sorry, didn't mean to stir anything up. Should I have just put this in the Troll Hole?
[Trisquel-users] New York Wants To Know: Have You Been Texting And Driving?
http://www.npr.org/sections/alltechconsidered/2016/04/27/474980140/new-york-wants-to-know-have-you-been-texting-and-driving No thanks. My thoughts: 1.)This may sound rough, but lieberman's son should have, if he didn't already then i guess it didn't work, told his pal who was driving to stop texting while driving. 2.)Lieberman says, "I don't think that you have to surrender all your privacy rights to get this right." -- He is going to spark something terrible if this happens. Even if he 'doesn't think' that will happen, it probably will. Another collection for digital profiling.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Free Software and Automobiles
Indeed.
[Trisquel-users] Free Software and Automobiles
Is there information on this? If so, I would assume there is only something on a more high level for customizing something in a vehicle? Maybe something like customizing your radio? Just a guess of course. Anyway, I am interested in knowing, now or later, about when it comes to low-level software running in a car that helps run the engine. Is this or will this ever be possible for a driver/user to be able to look at and even customize the way the software runs the engine? I could see something like this being a heavy political issue, for many in not wanting this. I could have sworn that I heard something on the radio, back when VW was caught for the emissions scandal.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Abrowser from source
I tried but am having trouble installing.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Abrowser from source
Yes! Out of curiosity,I checked Arch's repository and the binary package exists. Though, of course I will not add arch's repository just for that and compromise my freedom. Hmmm
Re: [Trisquel-users] I noticed abrowser is being less updated then icecat now...
I have noticed this as well. But isn't, in some ways, icecat in more need of updates?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Abrowser from source
dcapeletti, could you send me the url? I was on the AUR page, but don't see any url for .tar file. Thanks
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Abrowser from source
Nevermind I found it!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Abrowser from source
dcapeletti, sorry about that. I think you just mispelled 'well' as 'will'. I was tired when reading reply. I was thinking about doing it that way... Thanks dcapeletti and JadedCtrl for your support.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Future Contribution to the Libre Comunity
YES, i know I have a ways to go, BUT i have had this interest in wanting to dive deep into low-level programming for hardware. Thanks for the support a_slacker_here and SuperTramp83!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Openmailbox
I've been using it for a while, as well. This has not happened to me. Weird, though. I am using icedove most of the time.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Abrowser from source
Sorry, I don't exactly get what you are saying.
[Trisquel-users] Installing Abrowser from source
I would like to use abrowser for my desktop which runs parabola gnu/linux, but the program is not in the repository. So, I have downloaded it directly from the trisquel packages page, but it is in .deb form. Is there anywhere I can find a .tar.gz of it? Parabola does not use aptitude but pacman. Thanks for you help.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Abrowser from source
You have a valid point, as I do have iceweasel. My main browser, though, is icecat which I absolutely prefer, but I will use iceweasel for some sites that don't work well with icecat. The thing is, there is a site I use to brush up on my programming skills: wibit.net. For example, here is a video: https://www.wibit.net/course/C/watch#lesson1.1 The site doesn't work well with icecat probably because of all it's nonfree js. Iceweasel does not work with it either, unfortunately. I did find that Abrowser does, though. I have been troubleshooting on how to find a way to get icecat or iceweasel to play the videos, but no luck. Pretty sure they are not running on flash, but html5. According to their videos, projekktor is used: http://www.projekktor.com/
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to Add All Ubuntu Repositories?
if you're fine compromising your freedom, you should just switch to ubuntu. But Substance, below, seems to have some advice.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trouble accessing video content
FIGURED IT OUT! Gnash was causing an issue.
[Trisquel-users] Future Contribution to the Libre Comunity
Hi users. I have FINALLY transitioned into running ONLY free software and have been doing so for at least six months. My life has changed because of this and I wish it could have only happened sooner. Although my computing was through Microsoft for ten years of my life, I am glad that it was so long because now I truly recognize and appreciate what I have gained through GNU/Linux. Desktop: old HP tower running Parabola GNU/Linux (not free hardware, unfortunately, but this was where I began transition from windoze to Mint -- to get a feel-- , then to Parabola GNU/Linux: which I LOVE since it can be so high maintenance, allowing me to really dig deep into learning how the system works.) Laptop: thinkpad x200 (from ministry freedom) running Trisquel GNU/Linux. (my very first true libre experience :D ) I also have have been building up my programming skills for about a year when time permits. I learn/practice during my free-time, thus this is a hobby. I have decided to go back to school and pursue education in Computer Engineering and plan to do so for as long as possible. (Preferably a P.H.D). As of now, I don't exactly know what I want to get into since CS Engineering branches into many different areas of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, but at some point I am sure my area of focus will be found and I hope the further I progress with my knowledge of GNU/Linux, the more of an influence it will have on my decision. So, I am wondering how I could contribute to the community as my education in this field progresses. I can see how this could be a vague question, so please ask questions.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Future Contribution to the Libre Comunity
Most importantly, I forgot to add, I want to make the utmost positive impact.
[Trisquel-users] Trouble accessing video content
could anyone see what they can find as to why this page won't play video content here? https://www.wibit.net/course/Intro/watch#lesson1.1 Troubleshooting but haven't been successful, thanks for the help.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trouble accessing video content
Also test with abrowser, please
Re: [Trisquel-users] Icecat not Connecting
Thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Icecat not Connecting
Figured it out! It was a proxy issue.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Icecat not Connecting
Would anyone mind telling me how to delete posts? This is a waste of space now and I would like to delete it.
[Trisquel-users] Icecat not Connecting
Hi, Icecat is not connecting to anything. Any URL I put in, or text to search, the browser tab just says 'connecting' for the whole time the browser is open. I have updated my system, re-installed icecat, but nothing has worked. Abrowser runs fine, though. Any ideas? Your help is appreciated.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Updates?
Thanks, moxalt. I will include this into my daily ritual. Still reading about the command line.
[Trisquel-users] Trouble Renaming directories/files
When I try to rename in the GUI (nautilus) the name of the dir or file is highlighted as though i should be able to edit the name but nothing happens when I type... When trying to rename from the command line, I get the following message: (this is an example of a directory labeled 'dir1') "Bareword "dir1" not allowed while "strict subs" in use at (eval 1) line 1." Thanks for any help.
[Trisquel-users] Updates?
Is Trisquel supposed to update automatically (update manager automatically popping up)? I was curious since I haven't seen this come up so I updated with the command line and there was quite a lot to be updated. Any advice?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Location entry in Nautillus Manager
Thanks to both of you.
[Trisquel-users] Location entry in Nautillus Manager
I am familiar with navigating through the terminal with the command line but is there a way to toggle this for the GUI?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't find how to disable Trisquel voice
Thanks, Dave.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't find how to disable Trisquel voice
this happens in the login section.
[Trisquel-users] Can't find how to disable Trisquel voice
Hi users, new gnu/linux user here with a question. Everything I click on has a robotic voice describing what it is that I have selected. Could someone direct me to the right place to where I can disable this setting?
