Re: [Trisquel-users] Advertising Trisquel & FLOSS

2015-07-21 Thread stevekilleen

Hello vinzv,

This is a very good idea. I've been thinking along the same lines myself but
I just wasn't able to put it into words. Also my lack of experience in the
area of marketing put me off suggesting the idea.

If there is anything I can do I would be more than happy to help in any way I
can.

Trisquel is unique in that it is completely free as in freedom But it's also
User Friendly! This very combination is what I believe will attract many more
users. It's just a matter of getting the word out there and having very
accessible material to read up on to encourage more users to make the jump to
freedom. (Easier said than done of course :-P )

Trisquel has such potential and I just hope one day to just bump into some
random Joe Soap in a cafe and see that he's using Trisquel to design a
presentation or something. That would be cool.

Anyway, love the idea,

Steve

Re: [Trisquel-users] time settings and window snapping

2015-02-13 Thread stevekilleen

Hello again,

Cheers for the replies!

onpon4,
I guess it might have been Trisquel 6.0 I meant. I thought it was 5.5 as I
remember in the beginning being able to window snap and then window snapping
disappearing for a long time. I must have had Metacity set instead of Compiz
in 6.0.

I would have to disagree with you about the semi-transparent panel looking
ugly, but I do agree that it is Very buggy! Even when using 5.5, I remember
the panel suddenly becoming un-transparent after a while of running the OS,
and now even when customising the panel in 7.0, those bugs still exist, and
as you mentioned, the indicator applet does not become transparent. I believe
if these bugs were fixed, some sort of nice transparency on the main panel
would look nice for a future release of Trisquel. The new transparent
Trisquel start menu in my opinion is very impressive looking. I love it.

Trisquelian
Thanks for the instructions to install Compiz. I may try that when I have
time.

Re: [Trisquel-users] time settings and window snapping

2015-02-03 Thread stevekilleen

Hello,

As regards Window Snapping. I'm wondering why it is no longer a feature in
Trisquel 7.0 too.

As far as I remember, window snapping was a feature in Trisquel 5.5, but ever
since Trisquel 6.0 it is no longer a feature.

Also Trisquel 5.5 featured a very nice transparent menu panel by default,
which I thought looked way nicer than the current default look of the menu
panel. I'm aware the menu panel can be made transparent in properities, but
any editing I have done with the menu panel has looked desperate.

I know these aren't real urgent matters, but look and feel is a big part of
attracting users to a new OS, And to the world of freedom I believe, and
small little features like Window Snapping, and a nice menu panel and icons
could win over Tonnes of new users!

The default Trisquel desktop is like a badge of honour in my opinion, and I
want to Wow people with it's look and feel, before I get technical, and then
tell them the punch line... It's Completely Free as In Freedom Software!

Anyway, sorry for the rant. I love Trisquel and everything it stands for.
Because of Trisquel I have easily been able to experience truely free
software, and for that, I am very grateful.

Thank you Trisquel and everyone involved. Keep up the great work.

Cheers,

Steve

[Trisquel-users] Not All Updates Can Be Installed: Partial Upgrade/Continue

2014-11-03 Thread stevekilleen

Hello,

I'm currently running Trisquel 7.0 amd64 and I checked updates as normal and
a message window pops up stating:

'Not all updates can be installed' with an option to do a 'Partial Upgrade'
to install as many updates as possible or press 'Continue' to install updates
as normal but updates are being held back.

When I select 'Partial Upgrade' I get a message saying;

'Can not upgrade

An upgrade from 'belenos' to 'trusty' is not supported with this tool.'

Can anyone tell me why this is the case?

Thanks in advance!

[Trisquel-users] Which is it: Abrowser or GNU IceCat?

2014-10-23 Thread stevekilleen

Hello,

So I've been testing Trisquel 7 amd64 and so far I'm impressed! I've
installed a couple of the amd64 images as they came out but I have one query.

I've tried three different amd64 images; the first one containing Abrowser as
the inclusion of IceCat in Trisquel 7 wasn't announced yet; the second image
I tried contained IceCat and the image I'm currently running now contains an
up to date version of Abrowser!?

So what browser is Trisquel 7 going to have in the end?

Personnally I prefer Abrowser so far. Everything in Abrowser just works out
of the box. Video streaming and all the add ons are available.

When I used IceCat, many webpages didn't display properly and even though
Gnash was installed by default, streaming video was not an option. Also the
add ons page was not working so I couldn't instal a html5 add on. I know it's
still in beta stages at the moment but so far in my opinion, Abrowser is the
superior browser. Well done to RMS and everyone involved for the great work!

Looking forward to Trisquel 7!

[Trisquel-users] [SOLVED] Grub2 Requests A Username/Password By Default When Booting An OS

2014-10-09 Thread stevekilleen

Hi again lembas,
Hello,

So I installed the latest Trisquel 7 image and grub2 requested a username and
password by default when trying to boot any other OS other than Trisquel. All
my attemps at the credintials resulted in being redirected by to the main
grub menu. Here's what I did to get around this issue.

I opened a terminal and entered the following command to see the username and
password credentials:

sudo cat /etc/grub.d/01_PASSWORD

Then I entered the following command to edit the 01_PASSWORD file.

gksu gedit /etc/grub.d/01_PASSWORD

In order to stop grub from requesting a username and password I commented out
all the lines or you can delete the lines. Then save and type:

sudo update-grub2

Hope this helps other people.

Steve

2014-10-09 Thread stevekilleen

Hi lembas,

Thanks so much for the quick reply! I hope to be able to purge my computer of
non-free stuff soon too. Most of my computer is free at least due to Debian
being free by default.

So I followed the path to 01_PASSWORD and I'm wondering, how do you open this
file to edit it. I can't seem to find an application to open it. Have I to
tweak it via the terminal? If so, how would one go about that?

Thanks in advance!

Steve

Re: [Trisquel-users] Strange grub behaviour - Trisquel 7

2014-10-09 Thread stevekilleen

Hello,

So I'm running the latest image of Trisquel 7 amd64 on my Acer notebook and
I've installed Trisquel alongside Windows and Debian.

After a completely fresh install of all these operating systems grub
(Trisquel's Grub) has been installed by default requesting a username and
password to boot Debian and Windows. All my username and password attempts
have failed and just brought me back to the grub splash screen. I can only
select Trisquel without being prompted by the username and password request.

My question is, what is the default username and password and why have this
set by default in the first place?

I checked out the links above but I'm still lost as to how to get around
this.

Any solution would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Steve

Hello,

Anyone have any experience using Kongoni? Apparently it's free as in freedom
but it's not endorsed by the FSF.

It looks impressive but it seems to be dormant at the moment. Hopefully it
will come back to life because it looks user friendly and we could do with
more user friendly free as in freedom OS's like Trisquel. The more the
merrier!!

Brilliant news!

I entered

'sudo apt-get install icecat'

and it's output:

'Package icecat is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source'

How do I go about adding the repo to install icecat?

I'm using Trisquel 7.0 amd64.

Hi again,

Thanks Legiment, that makes sense. Next time I'm installing Trisquel I'll try
that solution. It's not worth the hassle right now :-P

Is there an option in Trisquel's installer to specify that you want a
case-sensitive filesystem?

And yes I'm using Nautilus 3.10 in Trisquel 7.0 but I have experienced this
in non-alpha/beta versions of Trisquel.

Thanks again!

Hi,

Sorry for my lack of info.

sudo debsums -s just returns 'command not found' ??

The root file system is ext4 and I have a /home file system in xfs.

The name is only a case change but that is strange. Why must I give it a
temporary name first? Thanks for the solution but it's just strange and
annoying that one has to do that if they just want to change the case of a
letter.

Thanks anyway guys!

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 Alpha Images

2014-05-20 Thread stevekilleen

Hey again,

Just noticed there being multiples of the same alpha images of Trisquel 7 on
the images page linked above by jxself. Only difference is the dates and
size.

For example:

trisquel_7.0-20140515_amd64.iso 15-May-2014 20:25 517M

&

trisquel_7.0-20140518_amd64.iso 18-May-2014 18:11 855M

I have installed the image from the 15th but have been keeping up to date via
'apt-get' so does that mean I am up to date or is a reinstall necessary?

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Hi antisnob,

It was a 64bit edition I installed (amd64) without the fsf software included.

Hi Dave_Hunt,

I'm just happy to help out any way I can. Not much difference between 6.0 and
6.0.1 but the installation runs much smoother. Delighted with the beta
upgrade so far :-) The internal Atheros wireless card did not work initially
but as soon as I upgraded to the newest Linux Libre kernal it worked straight
away. The intel graphics card worked out of the box and I was able to use
Gnome Shell and Ubuntu's unity desktop environment with ease. (Pity about
ATI/AMD graphics cards *shakes fist*)

Anyway, highly recommend the upgrade!

Happy testing!

Hi again,

Thanks very much Dave. Good to know as I like to help out and test Trisquel

Also according to Andrew above, one can still upgrade from 6.0 by typing the
following into a terminal:

'apt-get update' and 'apt-get dist-upgrade'

Is this still true?

As far as I know FSF versions of the iso files are the isos given out at free
software foundation events and sometimes at Windows 8 promotional events to
guide people in the direction of freedom! :-)

Only difference is some extra software I think but I would go with the normal
iso as I was unable to log in to the FSF iso when I tried it when 6.0 came
out.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Red Text Displayed When Logging into Trisquel 6.0 AMD64 Randomly

2013-04-04 Thread stevekilleen
Thank you so much Magic Banana! Next time this issue happens when I'm booting
into Trisquel I shall follow your instructions and post the logs to this
thread.

In relation to 'Metacity', I did change the 'Window Manager and Effects' in
'System Setting' from Compiz to Metacity because I thought it might help, but
it has made no difference.

To my knowledge I don't believe any hardware is failing on my Acer Aspire
5536 but I do believe there is possibly a hardware compatibility issue with
my ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics card but that's nothing new as the drivers are
not open sourced, therefore I am using the default desktop environment: Gnome
Fallback(Classic) and have had no issues with Trisquel 5.5 under the same
hardware.

Anyway, thanks again and I will be back with the logs.

Steve

Sorry that the pictures are terribly unclear. I don't have access to a good
camera and also sorry that I don't have the jargon to explain the problem
better :-( I Think it's a 'kernel panic'.

Thanks again in advance if anyone can help.

[Trisquel-users] Desktop Appearance 'Changes Throughout The Day' Option Not Working

2013-02-19 Thread stevekilleen

Hello,

I'm running Trisquel 6.0 32bit with Gnome and discovered a minor issue here:

Trisquel Start Icon> System Settings> Appearance:

The option to have the deskop appearance change throughout the day doesn't
seem to work. I've tested it out for a while now and it never changes. I
believe this issue was also in Trisquel 5.5 with Gnome too.

Not a major problem I know, I just thought it should be made a aware of.

Re: [Trisquel-users] [SOLVED]System Monitor not visible in default Trisquel 5.5/6.0 Gnome desktop setup

2013-02-19 Thread stevekilleen

[UPDATE]
Just updated Trisquel 6.0 yesterday and System Monitor is now visible by
default in Gnome :-)

Trisquel Start Icon>System Settings>System Monitor

Awesome!

Re: [Trisquel-users] Dependency Error Gtk-Gnutella

2013-02-11 Thread stevekilleen
Thanks for the advice lembas! I Followed your links and tried some things but
still can't manage to update the dependencies for Gtk-Gnutella :-(

Anyone have an easy step by step solution to this? If there is one? I'm sure
it would be handy if you wanted to update other software on Trisquel too.

I managed to do it in Ubuntu a while back but can't seem to figure out how to
do it for Trisquel now.

[Trisquel-users] Dependency Error Gtk-Gnutella

2013-02-09 Thread stevekilleen
I am currently using Trisquel 6.0 x86 with Gnome and I installed Gtk-Gnutella
from the package manager. The version available in the package manager is out
of date and out of date versions of Gtk-Gnutella are unusable, so I
downloaded the newest version from the Gtk-Gnutella website and tried to
install it but got this error message:

Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: libfontconfig1 (>= 2.9.0)

How can I update the dependencies?
Are dependencies not to be messed with?

The version of Gtk-Gnutella currently in the package manager is:

Gtk-Gnutella 0.98.2 stable

Newest version currently:

Gtk-Gnutella 0.98.4

2013-01-20 Thread stevekilleen

Yes I agree!

The menu items should definitely be in alphabetical order to increase
usability. I honestly didn't notice until now (as I haven't been using
Trisquel that long) but I certainly notice now :-P

Every little thing helps to make this operating system the best free software
can offer, no matter how silly it may sound, attention to detail is
important, and that's what we the community are here for. To raise little
issues like this :-) And of course big and medium ones too :-P

Re: [Trisquel-users] Problems logging in to Live Image of the FSF version of Trisquel 6.0 32bit

2013-01-20 Thread stevekilleen

Ah I see! Thank you Chris!

This should be known before people download the FSF version as it's much more
time consuming to download with a slow internet connection compared to the
non-FSF version of the image. I was very frustrated to discover I couldn't
log in after all that time :-P

If it's been discontinued as you say, then the image should be taken down
before other poor souls get fooled like me :-D

Although in saying all that, I did read in another topic called 'trisquel 6',
someone called 'andrew' stated that the FSF version of the image is the image
that is distributed during Free Software Campaigns. If this is the case, then
it still doesn't explain why I wasn't able to login to the live desktop.

If anyone else knows anything, be sure to share.

[Trisquel-users] Problems logging in to Live Image of the FSF version of Trisquel 6.0 32bit

2013-01-19 Thread stevekilleen

In relation to this particular image below:

trisquel_6.0-20121201-fsf_i686.iso 01-Dec-2012 10:48 1.5G

Available at:

http://devel.trisquel.info/makeiso/iso/

I booted the specified live image(usb) of Trisquel above and was unable to
get past the login screen. I first selected 'Login' without typing any
username or password into the login fields and it loaded forever until I
pressed 'Esc' so I was stuck at the login screen.

Just want to know:

1. Is there anyone else experiencing this issue? (If so, any solution?)

2. Is there a default username/password for this particular image of
Trisquel?

My workaround was to use this image instead (Also availble at the link
above):

trisquel_6.0-20121201_i686.iso 01-Dec-2012 10:23 702M

But my workaround still doesn't solve the issue I experienced with the first
image I tried.

Any solution would be Much appreciated!

Re: [Trisquel-users] [SOLVED] Trisquel 6.0 won't boot without USB Stick

2013-01-18 Thread stevekilleen

Yes of Course!

During the installation double check that it's the Hard Drive you're
installing the bootloader to and Not the usb key! What aliasbody said will
save you from having the problem at all! Thanks aliasbody!

In relation to your question. It's never made any difference to me whether I
type:

sudo update-grub or sudo update-grub2

So I'm sure you're good with either one, but personnally I've never bothered
with the '2'. Whatever you fancy. :-)

[Trisquel-users] [SOLVED]System Monitor not visible in default Trisquel 5.5/6.0 Gnome desktop setup

2013-01-18 Thread stevekilleen

Hello,

Having trouble locating System Monitor in Trisquel 5.5/6.0 with Gnome? Well
so was I! You must display it first.

Go to:

Trisquel Start Icon > System Settings > Main Menu:

 Select the 'Accessories' catagory.
Scroll through the Accessories catagory and locate 'System Monitor'.
If the check box is not ticked beside 'System Monitor' check it!
 Select 'Close'

Go to:

Trisquel Start Icon > Accessories:

System Monitor should now be visible in this menu.

An important application to have access to so I believe it should be visible
in Trisquel's Gnome by default, but it isn't, so follow the instructions
above for now.

Re: [Trisquel-users] dual boot with windows 7

2013-01-18 Thread stevekilleen

Hello,

Had that very same problem when installing Ubuntu 12.04 a while back and with
Trisquel 6.0 recently. During installation (at 'please wait') the
installation stalled and refused to continue until I simply disconnected from
the internet, waited a bit, and it continued to install like magic!

It'll probably be easier from the beginning to not connect to the internet at
all though.

But as with Trisquel 5.5 it is the same solution for Trisquel 6.0.

[Trisquel-users] [SOLVED] Trisquel 6.0 won't boot without USB Stick

2013-01-18 Thread stevekilleen

Hello,

I installed Trisquel 6.0 32bit and I have it dual booted with Windows 7. I
was Completely baffled until I found this topic on Ubuntu Forums:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=12461395#post12461395

I installed Trisquel 6.0 from my usb stick, removed the stick after shut
down, turned on the computer to find that Grub Refused to boot into any
operating system without the usb key inserted. Grub seemed to be install on
my usb key!! So I simply followed wilee-nilee's instructions(found on
ubuntuforums):

#sudo grub-install /dev/sda

Then

#sudo update-grub

Then shut down the computer, removed usb key, turned on the computer and
problem solved!

It seems to be a bug with the Ubuntu 12.04 installation and of course
Trisquel 6.0 caught the bug too :-P

I hope this helps people.
