Re: [Trisquel-users] Easy guide to secure and privacy respecting VPN
Hello sleepruim, Bitmask is still beta or whatever. I haven’t had your problem though. I use Bitmask 0.9.2.1~20170212151504.168 Usually, Bitmask doesn’t ask you to type in your username and password each time you use it. To install and set up, I used the Bitmask instructions, not those on Riseup.net. I made my account on the Bitmask client, not on the Riseup website. Your best bet is run bitmask --debug , peruse the log files in .config/leap and see if other people have had the same problem as you. Sometimes, Riseup.net may be at fault, you can choose another provider from the Bitmask client. Maybe, the Riseup people can help you if you file a ticket. I’ve had to change my DNS, those of my ISP gave me trouble, apparently. It’s a good thing anyway to part with you ISP’s DNS, provided you don’t use those of Google or OpenDNS. Yet, now I have problems with sync TLS authentification. I can’t use Bitmask with the browser (websites never appear), though I can ping websites. It seems to work fine with Transmission, which is not essential for me since I only use transmission to download GNU/Linux distros. So my experience with Bitmask is very limited though I’m sure it’s a fine project.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Easy guide to secure and privacy respecting VPN
Hello everyone, Has anyone tried Bitmask VPN? You can try it from Riseup.net or Calyx. It’s free as in freedom and in free beer, which doesn’t mean it’s compromised. Riseup as an email provider doesn’t keep any data other than the data you leave on their servers (don’t leave your emails there, though everything on their servers is encrypted, get them on your harddisk through Icedove or Thunderbird.) Some people say Riseup.net or Calyx etc. are compromised because they’re in the US or in Canada, but I don’t think anywhere in Europe is any safer, except Iceland perhaps? Just to make sure there’s no misunderstanding: Never use Tor or Torbrowser for P2P. As Supertramp says, use VPN. Not even sure if P2P is safe with VPN.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Easy guide to secure and privacy respecting VPN
But wont the server operator know my user name and password?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Easy guide to secure and privacy respecting VPN
Thanks. I don't know any of these companies and I don't know the reviewer(s) as well. How do you find one you trust - or rather, one that skilled, well knowing and trustworthy people trust?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Easy guide to secure and privacy respecting VPN
Of course they do. That has nothing to do with OTR.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Easy guide to secure and privacy respecting VPN
>How do you find one you trust - or rather, one that skilled, well knowing and trustworthy people trust? Well, I would look for a service that has been around for a long time and has a good reputation. Torrent Freak is an amazing website and the people writing for it are awesome. But yeah, for important stuff you should not rely on a promise, the promise not to log. I can promise you I'll send you 10.000.000 bucks if you first send me 10.000...right? :) For important stuff I would much prefer TorBB. But as long as you use it for p2p (torrents) etc, u will be fine. One should always consider the following: no commercial VPN (no business) is gonna shut down their service and burn their servers when the coppers come knocking demanding the logs. Your 5 or 10 monthly bucks are not worth so much to them. One thing seems obvious to me: if there are no logs then there is nothing to hand the coppers when they come for it. For this very reason, any VPN should not keep any logs at all. They would avoid themselves a lot of trouble and offer their customers **real** privacy. But unfortunately I suspect (I'm not an optimist) very few of them do so. Which ones do so? I have no idea!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Easy guide to secure and privacy respecting VPN
talking about jabber. I got really confused about where to register an xmpp account. It seems that the official site closed and now one has to trust arbitrary sites. If one hopes for an anonymous account and a secured password, that seems like a lot to ask. Any advice?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Easy guide to secure and privacy respecting VPN
Though it seems easy and convenient, I find it a bit to the expensive side. Thanks for the tip, though.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Easy guide to secure and privacy respecting VPN
I use riseup and Bitmask but for the last few days I am heaving trouble logging in. I get a "wrong username or password" error. Does anybody have the same error? I can log into my account from the riseup website bit not from the bitmask app

Re: [Trisquel-users] Easy guide to secure and privacy respecting VPN
Just pick one. They're all interoperable. There's a list here that gives some information to compare them: https://xmpp.net/directory.php Rather than trusting the server operator, you can use end-to-end OTR encryption.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Easy guide to secure and privacy respecting VPN
Still, you have to take the word for not logging...

[Trisquel-users] Easy guide to secure and privacy respecting VPN
Hi. So far I didn't get to the point of using VPN. Not that I didn't want to but every time I stated to learn I quit since it was so difficult to get certain about which service to use and how to set it up. If you know a good and thorough guide on how to use VPN for privacy and a VPN-service that is absolutely trustworthy (!?), I would much appreciate to learn about it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Easy guide to secure and privacy respecting VPN
I hate to say it, but I get the feeling that VPNS become compromised over time because of dumb unlawful individuals who like the idea of fear and panic in the world. corrupt individuals whether unlawful governments or unlawful corporations... Tor seems to be better at the moment at least in my opinion.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Easy guide to secure and privacy respecting VPN
I think the easiest way to use a VPN is with his router from Think Penguin: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/free-software-wireless-n-mini-vpn-router-tpe-r1100
