Have you tried to modify things in the "Output" tab of the "Sound settings"?

It is indeed very easy to get the latest linux-libre. Just use this  
repository (instructions on the page).

The "connettore" drop-down menu aims to select the input. The "livello  
d'ingresso" allows you to test it (just make some noise).


I would try video calls from Pidgin to Pidgin. This is what I use and it  
works. I guess Epiphany to Epiphany should work as well.
