And one vestige of SNC lives on--when ABC took over ESPN, they give the net the SNC music package, since the channel had such a short life with little carriage. They immediately used one of the cuts on the package as the theme for SportsCenter (which contained the dah-da- dah-da-da-DAHHH... line that I assume was SNC's primary theme) and then a few years later switched to another cut from the package which featured a certain three-note repeated signature--and I don't think I need to describe that to you any more. Unfortunately, co-composer Annie Roboff doesn't see a penny of royalties, since she and her partner sold off the package to ABC for a flat fee (but considering she co-wrote the Faith Hill song This Kiss, among other things, she's not doing bad). -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! [TV orNotTV] Harris to Play McCain in HBO 2008 Election Film
He joins the already-cast Julianne Moore as Caribou Barbie in the adaptation of John Hellerman and Mark Halperin's book Game Change, which has the same writer and director as the HBO made-for about the 2000 election Recount: http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/03/23/ed-harris-john-mccain/ No indication who's playing President Obama, but it seems to me that they missing a bet if they don't cast Harry Lennix of 24 and Dollhouse, who not only looks like Obama but grew up in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood where Obama grew up (he also played a black president in a sketch on HBO's Little Britain USA, which may not help things). -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! [TV orNotTV] NoTV: NPR Anchor: Some of My Best Friends are Conservatives
Steve Inskeep, who certain NPR diehards will never forgive for replacing the sainted Bob Edwards on Morning Edition (some of the critics, who also like to claim that NPR has dumbed down, refer to ME sarcastically as Inskeep Co.), proclaims in Rupert's WSJ that his net is (ahem) fair and balanced, while around 500 comments to the article testify that he's not changing anyone's minds: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704050204576218543378702266.html?mod=djkeyword Of course, I believe that as what Paul said yesterday about MSNBC outside of Rachel and Ed, what NPR more reflects is Beltway thinking or official Washington more than any particular political view--and that's been true ever since Frank Mankewicz (the man who said that Prairie Home Companion would not be understood by anyone outside of Minnesota) was net president during the financial crisis of the early 80s. For the far right, that's too center for their taste (and they don't like the fact that to them NPR voices are all female, effeminate- sounding men or people with accents, not like those real men who sound like everyday Americans Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Michael Savage). And to the far left, like the Urbana, IL librarian who writes the NPR-sucks blog NPR Check while he worships St. Amy Goodman, Beltway thinking is another way of saying conservatism, pro-government (or, to put it more truthfully, pro- Pentagon) and corporatist--meanwhile, they never suggest an alternative to corporatism, which makes it sound like they want Soviet-style Communism. -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People!
