[TV orNotTV] Re: Late Show Drum Solo Week
He's only DOING shows, or he's only TAPING shows Mon-Thurs? I thought Fridays were still typically new, but just pretaped earlier in the week...? Last week, Friday's show was a rerun, and Thursday's looked like it was taped on Monday. So unless Donz tells us otherwise, I'll assume that's the summer schedule. -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! 55 here. DirecTV with a DVR. Selective about what I record for later viewing and zap past the commercials, as I have an older Replay TV with the quick skip feature. Only watch Dodgers games and Keith Olbermann (returning three weeks from Monday!) live. Haven't found a big 4½ network prime-time series in several years that held my interest for an entire season. -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! A friend. 55 years old and a blue collar worker. He has a big screen HDTV with a corresponding cable package, a VCR (I have no idea of he ever plays anything on it, he certainly can't record), a DVD player, and he has never had internet access, not through a computer, nor through a smartphone. He had minor surgery during then winter and during his recuperation he apparently watched Sportscenter all day. He is the traditional passive TV watcher and I don't see him going online at any time. The only circumstance I can think of is if his employer replaces his work cell phone with a smartphone and doesn't limit his data usage. When I get in a discussion with people about media consumption in the digital age, I always keep him in mind. -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! James Arness, the 6-foot-6 actor who towered over the television landscape for two decades as righteous Dodge City lawman Matt Dillon in Gunsmoke, died Friday. He was 88. Re: [TV orNotTV] RIP James Arness, 88
Gunsmoke still airs on Encore's Western channel, and It used to air on TV Land. He was handpicked by John Wayne for the role, and he was awesome at it. They did a few MOWs in the 1990s that were also fun. The only film I own in which he costars is Big Jim McCain, which was a bizarre piece of anti Communist propaganda that attempted to glorify HUAC. Regardless of when the divided IP ownership was settled in court, it will be interesting, in light of DC's line-wide Autumn reboot after its Flashpoint event, to see if they tinker with Superman's origin, powers and supporting cast in preparation for any legally-mandated changes. Let's not forget the most bizarre Thing about Arness - and the performance he gave that I'm most likely to watch over and over again. [TV orNotTV] OT: RIP Wally Boag
Steve Martin is reporting on Twitter that longtime Disneyland personality Wally Boag has passed away. Sad news. Back when the Golden Horseshoe Revue stage featured elaborate productions complete with can-can dancers and comedy, Boag was the star of the show. My hero, the first comedian I ever saw live, my influence, a man to whom I aspired, has passed on. Wally Boag. @SteveMartinToGo http://www.wallyboag.com/ -- Kevin M. Wally Boag. @SteveMartinToGo http://www.wallyboag.com/ Martin gives Boag a lot of credit for his developing approach to his act in his memoir Born Standing Up (great read for anyone who has not yet gotten around to it). I remember the Golden Horsehow Revue when I was a kid (but a later era that when Martin was working there). My family was not affluent, and the 45 minute trip to Orange County for a day at DisneyLand came once every couple of years, and was very precious. In the early days DisneyLand operated on the ticket system, and once we used up the E, D and Cs we were ready to sit still for the Revue (I don't recall every being able to re-buy the premium tickets, as some of my friends routinely did). I can't say that I knew Boag's name - though I saw the show several times while he was there. I would say that we found it corny but fun. In my later high school years I had a pass, and was able to enjoy more leisurely evenings at places like the Horseshoe. -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People!
