Kevin Rankin found time to return as Devil on Justified for a whole bunch of episodes while co-starring on Unforgettable. [TV orNotTV] Re: NBC Getting Cocky on 'Voice?'
The original Millionaire did not have entirely new contestants each show. Doesn't anyone remember that annoying foghorn-type siren that announced they were out of time for that show? Each show picked up where it left off with the current contestant; they did not start from scratch at the top of each hour. Or perhaps I am misunderstanding what Tom means by an arc. The original show had a new round of ten fastest finger contestants on every episode, only one or two of whom would get to play the main game. Yes, games would continue from one show to the next so that contestants could complete their games, and to hook viewers to tuning in next time - but no contestant ever appeared on more than two episodes, and we did not follow the original ten contestants' travails throughout the season. That's very different from the continuing storyline, or arc, of The Voice. There's a good chance that contestants introduced on the premiere of The Voice will still be competing on the finale. -Tim -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! I think you're misunderstanding. Millionaire gives you one chance at Fastest Fingers, one chance in the hot seat. There weren't the same people appearing over multiple episodes becoming better known due to their longevity and/or the producers turning them into characters through creative editing. No multiple-day champions (e.g., Jeopardy), no eliminating contestants one by one until the last one standing is the winner of the whole season (e.g., Survivor, The Amazing Race, American Idol, The X-Factor, Top Chef, Project Runway, etc., etc.) -- David J. In terms of unresolved storylines in the history of TV, the fact those two never had sex nears the top for me. I had never seen House until last Fall - since then I have pretty much inhaled the entire corpus, and am now up to date. I was skeptical of liking the show, but have really dug it. I have read some fan and critical reflections on the show since I caught up, and was surprised about a few things - one, that so many people thought the show jumped the shark at various transitions (I liked all of them - except for this season, which really does seem to have taken a dive; obvious reason: Cuddy). But nothing surprised me more than to see that Jennifer Morrison was a favorite for so many fans (well, I was also really surprised to see one of my all time favorite movie scenes being brought back to life - I've got Jews at my table!). I had watched the entire show in something of a vacuum, and for me her character (I am unfamiliar with the actress in any other role) was always the least interesting part of every episode she was in. I think it was near the end of the first season when it looked like she was going to leave the show, and I was so hoping that she would. OTOH, Oliva Wilde proved to be smoking hot, always interesting, and every moment she was on screen sizzled. I guess another reason I don't like this season is the permanent loss of the possibility of more 13. But the real emotional core of this show is the love story between House, Cuddy and WIlson - without that, it can never be the same. They should have paid her the money for one more year and gone out right. -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! [TV orNotTV] NotTV: Cumulus to Send Limbaugh Packing for Huckabee?
Cumulus Media Services, the radio syndicator formerly known as CItadel Media and ABC Radio, is launching a new talk show for Mike Huckabee on Apr. 2 that would run from noon to 3 p.m. ET against comedian Rush Limbaugh (through Clear Channel's Premiere Networks)--an interesting move, considering that many Cumulus talk stations carry Limbaugh live (most notably WABC in New York and WLS in Chicago) and also considering that Cumulus and Premiere share syndication for Sean Hannity later in the day (who is technically a Cumulus employee)-- would Cumulus stations dare dump Limbaugh knowing that a competitor would snap him up immediately?: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/09/business/media/mike-huckabee-to-begin-new-radio-show.html Of the two big markets I cited, CC has no AM properties in NY and their Chicago AM properties are lower-powered bottom of the dial stations (one of which is LMA'd to local Midway Broadcasting for urban talker WVON). If WABC dropped Limbaugh, Buckley's WOR would snap him in a minute if they could figure out what to do with station veteran Joan Hamburg, the last remnant of the station's old days of John Gambling's dad, Arlene Francis, Jean Shepherd and 15-minute newscasts every hour. In Chicago, Salem's WIND would want Limbaugh, but would Premiere swallow their pride and trade a 50,000 watt station for a 5,000 watter (and lose clearance for their Glenn Beck)? Which presents another possibility--would Tribune's WGN, a station that has never carried a syndicated talk show on weekdays--EVER--take Limbaugh if he was available, especially considering that they've been spending the last year or so backtracking on Randy Michaels and Kevin Pig Virus Metheny's attempt to turn 'GN into a hot conservative talk station? -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People!
