24 is also still airing uncut and commercial-free on DirecTV. (And I still
have no interest in watching it.)

Subject : RE: [TV orNotTV] Netflix in Bed with Cable?

I noticed a month ago or so that 24, which has been streaming on Netflix for
many years, rotated off. In it self not remarkable, one of the facts of Netflix
life is dealing with such things. But it was a bit odd, given that the new 24
Miniseries is starting soon, and a big part of Netflix' business model seems to
be catch-up or refresher binge viewing in advance of a new season.

Then I noticed that all seasons of 24 are now available on Comcast - but only
for purchase (I guess they are allowing free viewing of the first episodes of
each season). Was this a coincidence? Did Netflix's 24 contract happen to
expire in March, and Comcast jumped on the opportunity to sell it to customers
whose interest might be peeked by the new show? Or, did Netflix surrender its
right to stream 24, in exchange for either cash or consideration from Comcast
and maybe other cablers? This suspicion is stoked by another observation that
House of Cards is now available for viewing on some cable systems.

24 is still streaming for on Amazon Prime, so paying for it on cable is not the
only option. But I would be unhappy if Netflix was colluding with cable to
prevent its subscribers for streaming content included in the Netflix monthly
fee so that cablers can then charge for it separately.

I don't have an answer for you, but the recent Netflix deals with cable

I thought this episode was more coherent than some previous episodes. I
think that is because it was all about astrophysics and Tyson is more at
home with that subject and you can feel his passion as he explains what we
are seeing.

The story of the Harvard Computers is an important one because the work
they were tasked with doing was close to secretarial work and nobody
expected them to make groundbreaking discoveries. Even though it was after
Ada Lovelace and Marie Curie, science was still considered a male pursuit.
I think it was important for this series to give credit to Annie Jump
Cannon, Henrietta Swan Leavitt, and Cecilia Payne.

The second part of the episode was the best use of special effects I have
seen in the series. The animation had to show processes that take thousands
to millions of years to carry out and keep it on a level that is
understandable to the viewer.

True. Our local Cumulus Radio outlet (Q98) has only remedied that recently.
Used to be about 10 of the hour before they gave legal ID. Now (at least during
the weekdays) they've added the calls to a standard radio sounder that plays at
or near the top of the hour). It's easy if you have two seconds before the city
of licensure.

Of course there's always the Bob radio station on 96.5 that has the cutest IDs.

I'm glad you wrote this. In addition to Kevin I received 3 or 4 other links
to this video, and nobody has yet explained to me the basis for the
implication that the guy is overreacting. He actually seems to be very
calm, and he appears to be trying to get other people out first, and then
himself.

If we could predict earthquakes with even a 50% accuracy, and the
indication was that a big one was about to hit right where the TV studio
was, I don't think we would mind if the anchors went for their desk or
other appropriate shelters.

I wholeheartedly disagree with the comparison. Shocknek was a hysterical
overreaction. Lauban's seeing a radar that indicates quite clearly they're
about to be in a heap of trouble, and reacts appropriately. He's a CBM, not
a weather reader.

Which radio stations are doing less than they used to, at least those
stations in markets where Nielsen uses the Personal People Meter instead of
diaries. The commercial breaks that seemed to come around at :20 and :50
in the hour now seem to come at around :12 and :42. That doesn't mean that
there are still stations where the legal ID is whispered or covered over by
sound to emphasize the branding name (you know, Z100, KISS FM, LIte 97, The
Fox, Jack FM, etc.).

If it wasn't clear, I was being facetious about complaining to the FCC about
the use of "KTLA-DT."

Really, as anyone who's heard a radio station bury their legal ID between two
commercials at :52 can tell you, the FCC doesn't necessarily care all that much
about this.

I'm not 100% certain of this, but I think television stations were always
allowed to use the suffix -TV even if it wasn't officially part of their
assigned call. If so, I suspect the FCC would tell you they can use -DT on
the same basis.

Unfortunately, I don't have time at the moment to research this.
