Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: TARDIS materializes at Retro TV

2014-05-30 Thread K.M. Richards
Generally speaking, although the network is the direct descendant of the
original classic television channel, Retro Television Network (which
dates back to 2005), its original owner, Equity Media Holdings, had a bad
financial tumble in 2008. That was when the current owner, Henry Luken,
purchased the network from them.

Unfortunately, in the process their relationship with the major syndication
companies -- notably NBCUniversal and CBS Paramount -- soured and for the
last few years the schedule has consisted of programs available through
lesser syndication companies such as Classic Media and the Peter Rodgers
Organization, plus the handful of old shows that have fallen into the
public domain.

Their late night schedule now includes such non-retro fare as *Cold Case
Files* and *DaVinci's Inquest*.

Meanwhile, the more popular retro shows moved to Antenna TV and MeTV (and
more recently, Cozi), which as a result has gotten those networks a lot of
carriage, often at the expense of Retro.

The move to carry the classic *Doctor Who*, plus the previously announced
*Mystery
Science Theatre 3000*, is a good one as it starts to reposition Retro as a
channel with content you can't find elsewhere. I think they should pursue
*Dark
Shadows* next, as SciFi never did make it all the way through the series
before cancelling it ... and that was more than ten years ago anyway.

[TV orNotTV] Re: Good news/bad news for Stargate fans

2014-05-30 Thread M-D November
Considering I've never met a person who says I loved the Stargate movie
but never really liked the TV series, I don't see how this could be
anything but bad news.

FWIW, I'll agree that SGU was crap for 95% of its run - when the writing
was on the wall and the producers/writers realized that nothing they did
would get SyFy to uncancel the show, they finally got back to the business
of writing a Stargate series, and the final episodes were actually quite
good. Of course, by that point the damage was done.

But in defense of SGU, I don't entirely blame the production team, because
I strongly suspect they were under pressure from SyFy to make SGU more
BSG-like. Of course, in a perfect world, SGU would never have launched and
SG: Atlantis would have been allowed to continue.

commentary on the original film, the originators despised just about
everything connected to SG1. So while I'm glad Stargate will continue,
since the last part of the franchise, SGU, was -- and I'm being kind here
-- unprecidented crap, I find it tough to be optimistic about putting it
back in Emmerich and Devlin's hands.

The Allentown station will toss some shows in favor of their
Spanish-language local news, among other things.

We must have missed the announcement of MST3K back in March

I'm kind of sorry to see that. I didn't watch the show regularly and
usually caught snippets during commercial breaks in the news or Late Show.
Arsenio had a lot of trouble booking relevant guests and his biggest
bookings were even bigger when they were on his original show, like Eddie
Murphy and Prince. But he had a different voice than the other late night
hosts and could have interesting conversations with African American guests.

[TV orNotTV] Re: Marv Albert cutting back

2014-05-30 Thread 'Greg Diener' via TVorNotTV
It's probably a good thing having watched many CBS Jets games here in NY,
we would often get Marv with Rich Gannon on color. Marv would often seem
lost calling a play and forget who got the ball and would miss certain
aspects related to the play. It also didn't help Marv that Rich Gannon is
one of the most inept color commentators not named Dan Dierdorf on the NFL
on CBS payroll.
