[TV orNotTV] anybody ever been to a Colbert taping?
Never done a Colbert taping, but I did a TDS taping in 2008. We got to the studio at about 3; there were already a few people in line, but no one camped out, probably because there's no 'standby' line like at Letterman. -- -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! [TV orNotTV] Casey Kasem Finally at Rest
The center of a family feud and a media circus in his final days, the veteran radio and TV personality died today at 82. Beginning as a child actor in his native Detroit on The Lone Ranger and The Green Hornet, Mr. Kasem became a DJ as radio changed, being more of a wacky type early until one of his bosses suggested that instead he talk about the artists and their music, like Martin Block (the New Yorker who was arguably the first radio DJ). Luckily, Mr. Kasem found a book about pop music artists in the station trash can and developed the teaser bio style that took him eventually to KRLA in LA and to inventing with Tom Rounds and producer Don Bustany American Top 40, that weekend radio institution. Mr. Kasem hosted the show for its first 18 years, moved from ABC (who had acquired original syndicator Watermark) to Westwood One for the similar Casey's Top 40 and then in 1998 bought back the rights to the title along with Chancellor Media (who would be acquired by Clear Channel) and returned to the show until 2003, when he handed the Billboard charts over to Ryan Seacrest (although he continued to host the spinoff versions for adult contemporary formats until 2009). In addition, he did a spinoff TV show called America's Top 10 (that Brits know him better for thanks to its regular appearance on the overnight schedules of ITV when that network went 24/7 in the mid-80s), many, many commercials, was NBC's primary promo voice for some years in the 80s, played one of Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre Players doing The War of the Worlds in the TV film The Night That Panicked America and lots of cartoon voices, notably Shaggy on Scooby-Doo: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-casey-kasem-dead-20140615,0,21710.story And may Mr. Kasem's soul keep its feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars. -- -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Who Did Alex Succeed in the Guinness Book?
Bill Cullen does hold the record for the number of game shows hosted (as in separate titles) and Bob Barker did have a long run with Truth or Consequences so it is conceivable that one of them hosted more total episodes across all show titles hosted than Alex. Another possible contender would be Wink Martindale, who is second to Bill in number of different game shows hosted. He and I are both members of Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters, so if he is at our next luncheon I will try to remember to ask him. [TV orNotTV] Re: Casey Kasem Finally at Rest
Point of order: Billboard and AT40 parted company in the 90s when Shadoe's version ended; they were switching back and forth between Mediabase and competing trade-pub Radio Records during the newer incarnation... [TV orNotTV] Lorne: SNL had a hard season
I saw a story at Vanity Fair's website, which was just a link to this interview at Deadline http://www.deadline.com/2014/06/lorne-michaels-exclusive-interview-emmys-2014-saturday-night-live-late-night-tv/ and some breathless commentary. In the interview Lorne talked a little about this history and the NBC late night shows as well as SNL. Here's an excerpt about the hard season: *DEADLINE: You’re coming off a rebuilding season at *SNL*. How challenging was it?* *MICHAELS:* We lost four leading men at the end of last season, Fred and Bill and Andy and Jason, all of whom were very seasoned, very strong cast. We lost Kristin the year before. All have been here a long time, and you get used to how good people are. Losing the fifth leading man in Seth (in early February) was a hard thing, in the middle of a season, because there’s only one other time in the 39 years that we ever changed Update in the middle of a season, and that was Norm Macdonald to Colin Quinn. And that was more because a whole other set of reasons, but I think that that made it a much harder thing, in addition to having to focus on launching Jimmy and launching Seth. But *SNL*, we put a lot of pressure, a lot of new people. It was a hard season. *DEADLINE: Are you considering any casting changes heading into next season?* *MICHAELS:* Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. We’re still in the middle of rebuilding. So, there will be changes this year. -- -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People!
