That initial joke he told was a “feeling out the crowd” joke. He even said it
was after he told it.

Subject: [TV orNotTV] Matt Rife and his Netflix special

Matt Rife’s Netflix comedy special is being vilified for misogyny. I didn’t
care much until Marc Maron’s sounded off on it during a discussion with Kliph
Nesteroff. The Daily Beast covered it in a story: Marc Maron Sounds Off on ‘New
It Boy of Shitty Comedy’ Matt Rife

https://www.thedailybeast.com/marc-maron-sounds-off-on-new-it-boy-of-shitty-comedy-matt-rife

That got my attention. The article said it’s one of the most-watched comedy
specials on Netflix.

I decided a week or so ago to watch it and report about it to the group. I
watched the first 15 minutes or so. And now, a week later, I decided I’m not
going to finish it. Not because it’s offensive. Because it’s not funny.

Rife got a following through social media. Maybe those bits are funny. I
haven’t watched them. His Netflix special is just clunker after clunker, at the
“pull my finger” level. You could take just about any other comedian who has a
Netflix special and film them doing crowd work and it would be funnier.

Spoiler alert: Here’s the joke at the beginning of his special that caused the
most outrage. A restaurant hostess is serving him. She has a black eye. Rife
said of course she has to be hostess, because if she could cook she wouldn’t
have the black eye.

It’s an old joke. Rife is telling a street joke in his Netflix special.
Whatever skills polished comedians have in telling jokes, Rife doesn’t have
them. I’ve written earlier about Dave Chapelle telling jokes that border on
being offensive or cross the line. But Chapelle has talent, improving the joke
with his delivery and his energy. Rife is flapping around on stage like a carp
out of water.

A few jokes later, he’s talking about women and astrology. I don’t remember the
exact joke, but he says in talking to a woman and the difference between
Jupiter and her is that Jupiter has a ring and she doesn’t. Jupiter? A ring?
You mean Saturn? Jupiter actually does have a ring, but it takes sophisticated
equipment to see it. Saturn is the planet best known for its ring. Anyone with
a backyard telescope can see it.

The Netflix special has strong audience laughter to his jokes. I wonder how
much of this has been sweetened. Then again, he was a hit on social media.
Maybe there are crowds that dig this kind of humor and Netflix was right to
give him a platform, at least from a business perspective.

There’s another comedian who was canceled because of his jokes. Shane Gillis
was picked to join the cast of “Saturday Night Live.” He got unpicked after his
jokes on a podcast were deemed racist and homophobic. He’s making something of
a comeback, I guess. He has a special on YouTube, which I haven’t watched. But
I’ve seen clips on his stuff on TikTok and he seems funny. Unlike Rife, he
knows how to tell a joke.

Jimmy Fallon posted a link on his Facebook page to a sketch he did
with Miley Cyrus where they changed emotions based on the emotion
described on the screen.

It was notable because every comment I saw -- and I scrolled through
several hundred -- was an attack on Cyrus. Not one favorable thing. I
went to post a link to it for discussion here but the link has been
removed.
I've only seen the opening, Miley Cyrus' sketch and the Hillary
Clinton bit but I thought overall it was a solid start.

Quality over quantity. But syndication prevents that from occurring for these

Valvano worked for ESPN for less than three years before he died. He

really think you're going out of your way to blow up the achievements
of Jimmy V and to downplay those of Stu Scott. Scott was an ESPN guy

Here, in a simple stat, is how ESPN has changed (I'd argue for the worst),

I have the SportsCenter Big Show from the day Jim Valvano died of cancer.
From the opening of the segment to the fade to black at the end of the act
was 7:29. Here was a man who was not just a key member of ESPN, but had a
decent history as a basketball coach (won a national championship at NC
 State).

ESPN has released their tribute to Stewart Scott: a man who did nothing but
narrate sport highlights and host gameday programming. He once, on a New
Year's Eve broadcast, begged viewers to not boo pro athletes: as much
sucking up to the athletes he covered as anything. He, effectively, is
ephemera in sports broadcasting. That tribute lasted 15 minutes.

I look forward to the four-minute SC segment if Vin Scully dies.

RE: [TV orNotTV] Help For DVR Decisions on New Shows

Subject: [TV orNotTV] Help For DVR Decisions on New Shows

I find I am focusing in on the new Fall shows later and later - with only 1 or
2 exceptions, I really had no awareness of most of these. I found a quick guide
on the WaPo that listed 25 new shows (well, 26, but I am leaving off
Transparent which I will be watching, but is streamed on Amazon). Based on
those descriptions and recommendations, and my own sometimes perverse
predilections, I have assigned them to 4 categories: Definitely record,
Trial record (which also means they will likely loose any recording face-off
decisions with higher ranked shows; the notation sucker here means I gather
from the critics this is probably a dog, but since I am a sucker for this kind
of show I will probably try to watch it to decide for myself. Several to many
of these will probably either not survive face-off decisions, or never get
watched by me as they build up on my DVR and I hear bad word of mouth);
Probably Not (open to upgrading if I get strong recommendations from others)
and No (will not record even if others say it is great - may watch in a few
years if proven wrong). This list is supposed to include all new dramas and
sitcoms, but not reality shows or specials.

I am soliciting any quick hits on any of these, especially those with
recommendations to move up or down programs I have placed in the middle two
categories:

Yes
1. Madam Secretary
2. Gotham

Trial
1. Survivor's Remorse
2. Jane The Virgin
3. Forever (still grieving premature loss of “Amsterdam”)
4. Gracepoint (I never saw Broadchurch, so I might try this first)
5. NCIS: New Orleans (sucker)
6. State of Affairs (sucker)
7. Scorpion (sucker)
8. Stalker (sucker)
9. Selfie (This would be “No, but Karen Gilian, so…)

Probably Not

1. Blackish
2. Cristela
3. Mulaney

4. The Affair
5. The Flash
6. The Mysteries of Laura

No
1. How To Get Away With Murder
2. Marry Me
3. Bad Judge
4. Manhattan Love Story
5. A to Z
6. Red Band Society
7. The McCarthys
8. Constantine

But where are you binging on it? It does not seem to be streaming on netflix,
and only the 5 most recent are available on hulu. Amazon (and I assume iTunes)
has seasons available, but not for free on Prime. Do you think it is worth

The DVR +2 numbers actually have helped the ratings to make them OK rather
than disappointing. The quality needs to improve though.

I wonder how the bean counters at Disney have figured the cost/benefit of
keeping this show on all year vs extra tickets and merchandizing for the
films. I guess they might already have an algorithm for that somewhere,
since that must be at least part of the reason why Wonderful World of

So only good arrangements shouldn't be stolen? Weak sauce.

And let's put this song in the context in which it was written. In 2005,
Jonathan Coulton challenged himself to put out a song a week in a project
he called Thing-A-Week (go figure). Baby Got Back was just one of 4 or
5 covers over the 52 weeks. During this time, he came up with some of his
best songs like RE: Your Brains, Shop Vac, Code Monkey and You
Ruined Everything.

So yeah, it's an unfortunately remnant of white guys doing ironic rap
covers, but if his creativity is anything like mine, you sometimes have to
scribble the pen that's not writing a bit on a pad in order for the
creativity to flow. That was the challenge of Thing a Week.

My theory: for the NFL RedZone, they had one singular model to follow, in
the form of DirecTV's Red Zone Channel, which had existed for a few years
before the NFL got into the act with their version. For their NFL coverage
and pregame show, they had to synthesize from a number of other efforts.

I'm a fan of the DirecTV version with host Andrew Siciliano, which I think
is similarly worthy of praise to what PGage said of the NFL Network

I really enjoy watching the Red Zone Channel during the early games when
 there's a lot going on.

issue of EW arrived the other day, but I haven't had a chance to see
if this is one of their criticizing years or one of their cheerleading
years. I haven't seen TV Guide in years -- no idea how credible their
Fall Preview might be. Some network promo ads have been unavoidable,
of course, but have drawn me to be interested only in Last Resort and
 Elementary.

The DB piece was helpful. This was about the 4th recommendation I have read
to watch Nashville even if I hate country music (which I do). They have all
mentioned that it is impossible to not enjoy Connie Britton (which does
seem true). Maybe I will at least try it. The DB was down on Revolution,
which is also consistent with several other negative reviews I have read,
and with the really cheesy vibe given off by the previews; but this is the
kind of show I usually give a lot of chances to, even when they are quite
bad, so I will take a flyer. New to me was the British show about the
midwives - I will try that one out (on PBS).

I have been trying to see which new shows I might want to make room for on
my DVR presets, but realized I knew surprisingly little about any of them.
I surfed the web for some help, and came up with the candidates below. I am
interested if anyone sees a show not listed that should be, or has a strong
feeling to urge me off of any that are. Not all of these shows got the
thumbs up from my original source, and there were other shows with good
reviews that I could tell were just not my cup of tea (something about
Nashville country singers?) - below are shows that, from the descriptions
and reviews, seemed like they could be things I might enjoy at least
somewhat (the lower line for that for me is something like Hawaii Five 0).
I am pretty committed to at least checking out Elementary (I know), and The
Mindy Project, but other than those I am uncommitted. Even though the
Olympic ads turned me off the entire NBC new fall schedule, reviews I have
read suggest that New Normal and Go On are worth giving a chance.

- Go On (NBC)
- New Normal (NBC)
- Revolution (NBC)
- The Mindy Project (Fox)
- 666 Park Ave (ABC)
- Last Resort (ABC)
- Elementary (CBS)
- Vegas (CBS)
- Arrow (CW)

There is no solid customer base. Everyone’s just dabbling, so NBC is

 it.

And he also reminds us that only a small subset of the Internet is on

son was in 5th grade, and now he is a freshman in high school, and it has

one of the few sweet shows that does not make me sick. By the end, like
Sarah, I loved Chuck Bartowski and I didn't know what to do about it. I
thought they had a fantastic finale last night, and gave the fans, who

The show will always be Chuck-tastic.

that until just before it starts up again next year. HBO is the only
one I keep around because I like both True Blood and Game of Thrones.

Movies in general don't interest me as much as series. If I really
want to watch a movie, I Red Box it or just wait until it's on Netflix
streaming. Even if that's a couple years down the line, no biggie.
It's just a movie. If it never comes to Netflix streaming, it's their
loss. I'm not paying extra money just to see a movie.

Also Camelot. But yes, Starz was more important to Netflix a year ago

Re: [TV orNotTV] Netflix Too Good To Be True

Hulu has more recent series. Amazon's library seem more on par with Netflix
in terms of how old their content is.

Netflix is definitely more diverse than Amazon. But with the added bonus of

as just the beginning. Most ominous for people like me is this: Wedbush
Securities... predicts Netflix's streaming content licensing costs will
 rise
  from $180 million in 2010 to a whopping $1.98 billion in 2012.

I am not a business man, but it seems like this inevitably must lead to
 the
monthly Netflix rate going up - and if it goes up more than a couple of
dollars a month it becomes a significantly less useful service. At
 $10/month
it is a great supplement to my satellite (soon to be cable) package - and
for people who can't and don't want to pay for any extra TV, it would be
 a
great alternative to basic cable. At $20/month or more (which is not even
close to the percentage increase in their predicted content costs) it
becomes more of a luxury item that I might do without - especially since
 my
new cable package apparently includes a discount on all premium channels
that will make it significantly cheaper (for the next 2 years at least)
 than
my current phone+internet+ satellite (HBO only). Moreover, I am told that
 we
will be able to access a lot of the Comcast content online (which is what
 my
  kids mostly like to do).

The article also notes that while Netflix got out in front of the
 steaming
model, it has now attracted competitors with much deeper pockets:
 Netflix
had a $161 million profit last year on sales of $2.2 billion, and it
 ended
last quarter with $342 million in cash on hand. But Netflix's rivals have
much larger bigger wallets. At the end of the first quarter, Amazon had
almost $7 billion in cash, and Google had a whopping $37 billion. Plus
 Hulu
is for sale, and could go to another deep pocket telecommunications or
 tech
  corporation.

If online distribution becomes just another form of cable TV, then it
 will
be less attractive, and these last few years may be remembered as the
 short
  golden age of online content.

Does that mean we non-streamers can get our Netflix-by-mail back?

Re: [TV orNotTV] Netflix 100 Problem

2011-07-06 Thread Jason Carpio
Hmmm, i can see this issue being a problem. However the UI on the xbox 360
accommodates the all series episode in one package option well.

On Wed, Jul 6, 2011 at 4:40 PM, PGage pga...@gmail.com wrote:

I don't want to be one of those Netflix bashers; the Netflix has been very
good to me and my family, and it is easy to get spoiled when you don't get
everything exactly your way. But a problem has come to my attention that is
moderately irritating. I think (but am not sure) that I have at least
figured out what the problem is, but I am wondering if anyone here knows of
 a solution.

The problem is (I think) related to a change Netflix made some months ago -
TV series used to be indexed separately by each season, so that, for
example, you would add Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 1 to your cue, and
then also Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 2, and so on. A while ago they
started saving the entire series, so you would only add Buffy the Vampire
Slayer once, and all seasons are in the cue. This did not happen all at
once - I noticed that for a while some were saved the old way, and some the
new. But a few months ago or so though, it looks like all shows are saved in
the whole series method. I don't like this new method - it is more
difficult for one thing to tell when you have gone from one season to the
next. But that was a very minor irritation.

Then I started watching SG-1, notable as the first show I streamed from
Netflix since the changeover that contained a large number of episodes. I
got a Vizio Blu Ray wireless device for Father's day, which is set up to
stream Netflix (and other services). I like it. But apparently many non-PC
devices (including my Vizio) have a limit on the number of episodes from any
one show that can be displayed in memory. When I got around midway through
the 5th season of SG-1 I came very close to going right to the first episode
of Season 6 - but then noticed that there were only 2 episodes in Season 6,
and that it then continued with Season 7. That seemed odd, so I went and
looked at the Netflix listings on my computer (IMac) and sure enough not
only were there a full 22 episodes for Season 6, but there were 22 for
Season 5 as well, even though my Vizio only displayed I think 12. I googled
around just a little and saw that others were having similar problems - and
apparently the magic number is 100. Many non-pc devices will not display
 more than 100 episodes.

The fix for this seems to be to disconnect the non-pc device from netflix,
go to the computer, play the next episode (that does not display on the
non-pc device) for 5 seconds, exit, then restart netflix on the device. That
brings that episode up (and, in my experience so far, the very next one, so
that the procedure recovers 2 episodes) though the cost is that the two
preceding episodes get deleted from the non-pc device display. Netflix seems
to think that this is the final solution to the problem, not the temporary
 patch that it feels like.

Its not the end of the world - probably everyone who streams on non-pc
devices also has access to a computer at least much of the time to work the
fix. It is a limitation on the claim that you can watch Netflix content on
your television just as easily as you can on your computer. It is a moderate
pain, as if you are not careful you will start watching an episode from a
season or two in the future, and have to go into the next room or wherever
and repeat the procedure. I don't know why these devices have such a limit,
but it is frustrating that there seems to be such an obvious, long term fix
to the problem, which is to go back to packaging shows season by season.
Since no show has more than 100 episodes in a season, this problem would
 never pop up.

So, two questions I guess: 1) Aside from making the queues a little more
tidy, what advantage to packaging all seasons together is there that
outweighs the inconvenience do non-pc device users? and 2) has anyone found
a better fix for this problem?

I agree that the nudity seems pretty gratuitous at times, but I'm not
totally sure that I buy the implicit part of the argument that it's
somehow worse for female characters. I'd argue that 100% of the
below-the-belt male nudity that I can recall from Game of Thrones was
extraneous to the plot in the sense that it could have been done with
some cover or by framing from the waist up without losing anything.
The same applies to the vast majority of the female nudity that I can
recall, but not necessarily all of it (e.g., Danerys' last scene and
Cat's sister breastfeeding.)

Also, if she gets to use The Sopranos as an example, I get to counter
with Oz, which had recappers tittering about gratuitous dong shot(s)
while the (very few) female characters pretty much kept their clothes
on.

On Fri, Jul 1, 2011 at 20:41, PGage pga...@gmail.com wrote:

 Calender, available online at:

 http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/tv/la-ca-hbo-breasts-20110703,0,6762922.story

This is an articulate expression of growing sentiment I have seen expressed
in recent months, both online and in face to face conversations, mostly
since Game of Thrones. I am surprised that there is a lot in it that I agree
with (surprised because, like Kramer in that Seinfeld episode with the naked
woman traipsing around in the apartment across the street, few heterosexual
American men can really bring themselves to call for less female nudity on
 their television sets).

Still, there was much I did not agree with. I don't agree that upper body
female frontal nudity is always, or even mostly, gratuitous and exploitative
(that she calls tits, as opposed to the artistic depiction of boobs, as in
the final scene of  the season-ending episode of Thrones, which McNamara,
with some justification, calls the the best use of female nudity on
television ever) on HBO. I am currently re-watching the complete series of
The Sopranos, and have been confirmed in my judgement that the mostly
plastic tits at the Bing are almost always an essential marker of the
underlying limited humanity of Tony and his boys, and almost never really
used for erotic titillation. The nudity in the various sex scenes most of
the time come closer to McNamara's breasts than tits (in a variation of what
Paul Newman once famously said about the The Player - they are the kinds
of scenes where we usually don't see the tits of the women we want to see,
but mostly the tits of the women we don't want). Ditto the use of boobs in
Deadwood. I thought Rome was a bit titty excessive (I only saw the first
season of that), but unlike McNamara, I think their use in Boardwalk Empire
was mostly justified. I have not seen the HBO vampire show, I hear there are
a lot of tits in that.

But Thrones does seem to have set a new level for gratuitous tit shots.
There were a couple of much discussed scenes where the boobs seemed to be
thrown in merely to keep the audience from flipping during extended periods
of plot exposition by one of the main characters. Again, unlike Ms. McNamara
I am not automatically offended by the use of naked female breasts - I have
found it possible to appreciate the beauty of the female form (okay, lust
after hot babes) while also respecting women for their intelligence, humor
and abilities. But a few years after my age stopped ending in the word
teen I stopped being interested primarily in the sight of strange female
breasts (though a certain interest remains), like most (well, many) grown
men who have seen a few real breasts of real women. The use of tits on
Thrones had the effect on me of undermining what in most other respects was
a successful attempt to tell a fantasy saga that grown-ups could enjoy. But
those long titty scenes threatened to reduce the show to the the its genre
spawn in the sweaty daydreams of 15 year old boy virgins.

Unlike McNamara, whose article had the pungent aroma of hyper-feminist
puritanism, I would like to see Thrones, and maybe HBO in general, give more
thought to its use of nudity and sexuality, not to focus on de-sexualized
depictions of breasts as in the dragon mother scene, but a more mature, and
effective inclusion of sexuality and eroticism in its dramas.

I disagree. What this starts to do is match the conversations and
discussions with the show, which provides a better identification for
advertisers who are looking for what's being sold. We've all agreed
that Nielsen is barely functional as it stands. This is as good a shot
as any to move to the next step.

The idea is a good one (moving beyond the Nielsen sample), but I am
skeptical of the execution. They appear to be weighting pretty highly how
often a show is mentioned on social networking sites, in the absence of
any hard data as to how this actually translates into viewership of the
show. It would not be surprising of shows like Glee generate more mentions
on twitter and FB than a show like CSI or Criminal Minds, but I am not sure
the extra mentions really translate into extra viewing. And I am pretty sure
the extra mentions rarely include references to whatever product was
advertised or even placed in the show. And making bets on how successful
future, as yet un-aired shows will do based on how often they are mentioned
on FB is absurd.

OTOH, I was impressed with the effort to quantify how a product's placement
or advertisement on a show actually impacts how it sells. If I were an
advertiser it seems like this is the specific information I most want to
know. I don't give a damn if 15 million people watch American Idol and only
4 million watch The Killing - if a 30 second ad on The Killing sells as many
units of my product as the same on AI, and it costs me a lot less, then that
is the ad I want to buy (or, if I don't it is because I care less about
selling that particular item and more about building product recognition or
something like that).

As Kevin has mentioned in another thread, the Garry Shandling episode of
Marc Maron's WTF became available today. I listened to it and found it
interesting for a couple of reasons. One is that it's the worst recording of
Shandling I've ever heard. He sounds extra nasally and phlegmy. Maron needs
to consider microphones other than those Blue mics. But I did learn about
 Shandling.
The prior episode to Shandling is Phil Rosenthal, one of the guys behind
Everybody Loves Raymond. Lots of good insight into television on that
 podcast too.
I've found Greg Fitzsimmon's FitzDog radio less consistent, but his
interview with Bill Lawrence was pretty good. Lawrence, who brought us
Scrubs and worked on other TV shows, was pretty candid. I think people
 will like it.

But if you mean performers who are successful online, and mostly only

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Mo Netflix Content

2010-12-08 Thread Jason Carpio
FOX has already added TV content to netflix. Bones, Lie to Me, Archer, Buffy
and Angel are on there.

what's not on there are 20 Century Fox Movies.

Modern Family, which is produced by 20th-Century Fox TV, is streamed
at abc.com and Hulu. If 20th makes a deal with Netflix (which I don't
see, considering that Fox doesn't do VOD and doesn't allow their shows
to air on CBS and NBC's VOD platforms), then Modern Family would be
there--this is just for ABC/Disney-owned product.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Netflix Price Increase

2010-11-22 Thread Jason Carpio
I actually went the other way with the plan and am now all digital. I
didn't really watch my discs all that much.. so this was a perfect solution.

I got an email from my friends at Netflix today informing me that they were
raising the price of the Unlimited instant viewing, unlimited (but 1 out at
a time) disk plan from $8.99 to $9.99. They also rolled out a new plan -
unlimited instant viewing, no disk viewing - for $7.99.

I am not complaining, I think it is still a good deal and I am happy with
the service. They say this is because more and more subscribers want instant
viewing (I guess meaning that they have fewer subscribers to the multi disk
at a time plans, and have to spread their fixed costs for shipping disks
 over a smaller base?).

What is interesting though is the report that the $2.00 spread between the
two instant viewing plans (one with access to disks, the other not) reflects
their shipping cost. Of course I suspect they have padded that a bit and are
making extra profit on the $9.99 plan, banking that most people would rather
pay the extra buck each month to be able to access the disks. But we would
need to know more information to tell.

The email references several times that instant viewing is becoming more
and more popular, so I hope all of this means that they realize their future
is in getting more of those disk only titles available for instant viewing.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Hulu Plus Drops Price, Beta Tag

Can I have an invite sir?

thanks.

Hulu Plus is now out of Beta and available to everyone. They've also
dropped the price from $9.99 to $7.99 and now offer a 1 week free trial.

On a selfish note, if you plan to test drive it, let me know and I can send
you an invite and you'd get two weeks free instead of 1 (disclosure: i'd
also get 2 weeks free, too).

Any guesses what they've got cooking?
My sincere hope is they will make the iTunes Store global, meaning

My glib guess is they will offer an apology for wasting everyone's

In more personal Apple related news, I was having keyboard and
trackpad issues on my four-year-old Macbook and went to my local Apple
store (OK, an authorized Apple retail outlet whose decor roughly
approximates that of an Apple store, though on a much smaller scale)
and purchased an external keyboard. And while I am delighted to
finally own a keyboard with Cyrillic characters, it turns out the
keyboard wasn't the issue. It is the battery, and the problem is
common enough that it pops up on many troubleshooting sites.
Apparently Apple batteries sometimes develop a bulge (don't we all?)
and press against the trackpad and cause havoc with the keyboard, too.
Batteries are more expensive than keyboards (and not in stock for
older models), so I am sans-battery for the time being. I just thought
I'd mention it in case anyone else experiences similar issues (or in
case those on this list connected to Apple want to hook a brother up
  with a battery).
