Re: [TV orNotTV] Fallon has the lowest percentage of guest talk

2014-07-11 Thread PGage
Professor Winzenburg is an academic, but the paper being cited here is not
an academic paper. There is no evidence it was published in any kind of
peer-reviewed journal. The paper includes no references or citations of any
kind. The description of the methodology used to generate the table is
brief, non-specific and incomplete. None of this is really a criticism of
Winzenburg - this looks to me like an extended blog post informed by
systematic but subjective (which he himself acknowledges in the paper)
analysis of a relatively small sample of content from the programs he is
discussing. It is, essentially, his opinion.

I disagree with Tom in that I am not sure how much value is in the chart
with the numbers, and as I say, this is not a published paper (from what I
can tell).

The most damning thing about the paper is the claim that Jay Leno practiced
biting political commentary.

from an academic, even one in media studies. Robert Thompson likely has
nothing to worry about from this guy.

I really don't recommend that anybody read that paper. A small part of it
is his breaking shows down according how much is spent on scripted and
unscripted segments. Then he goes show by show and gives his opinions about
the hosts. His opinions about the hosts have nothing to do with the
numerical analysis, and when I read it, I thought it was a project done by
a very young grad (or even undergrad) student and not a communications
professor. As an academic publishing a paper, he should at least have
gotten in touch with some producers and asked them why they chose to
structure their shows the way they do. This was a very poor effort and is
of almost no value - the only value is the chart with the numbers.

[TV orNotTV] Fallon has the lowest percentage of guest talk

2014-07-10 Thread 'David Bruggeman' via TVorNotTV
This is according to a study by Steven Wizenburg, a communications professor.
The THR piece also covers the percentages for the other hour-long late night
programs.  Most of them are several percentage points higher than Fallon with
the conversation.

2014-07-10 Thread bradfo...@dwx.com

I haven't bothered reading the paper yet but I have met Mr. Winzenberg on a
couple of
occasions. He teaches at a very small college here in town and, when I dealt
with him, he
also hosted a weekend radio show on WHO-AM (the former home of Ronnie Reagan).
Our interaction was around the time of The Beatles' Anthology project, I was
writer and
editor for a Beatles video collector's newsletter and his most memorable
question to me
was what are they really like? - as if I was a personal friend of theirs.
