I would really like to see something where manhole makes sense as one of the

impressive.

At PyCon-Au I demonstrated a 20ish line telnet chat server with
integrated http chat logs in a 3 minute lightning talk. 3 minutes was a
tiny bit short for a proper demonstration of capabilities, 45 might be
too long :P

[Twisted-Python] PyCon extreme Twisted talk!

2010-10-21 Thread Laurens Van Houtven
Greetings fellow Twisted aficionados!

So, Allen (dash) and I have decided that we were going to co-do the Twisted
Extreme talk at PyCon US 2011. Extreme talks are like talks, except with
less talking and more coding, so preferably something actionable for an
entire 45 minutes! That most likely means many steps: start small, and then
do something more complex.

I think it's probably a good idea to tune for people who understand Python,
understand basic networking, but don't really know Twisted very well. People
who have experience trying to educate people new to Twisted are very welcome
to chime in.

I'm not sure what people care about, so ideas are welcome!

I'm not American at all, and I think it's hilarious.

I notice that Wikipedia's "Gadsden Flag" page includes a scan from an
1885 school-book that includes a reproduction of said flag, and it
definitely uses a sans-serif typeface. Like most visual designs that
have been drawn and redrawn thousands of times by hundreds of people
over the centuries, I suspect a little variance is permissible.

> - color (although I like it because it's a Python-related shirt, and yellow
> isn't my favorite color)

The common ingredients of a Gadsden Flag reference seem to be "yellow",
"snake" and the slogan; given how much the Twisted Matrix logo resembles
the traditional rattlesnake (i.e. not very much) keeping the colour and
the slogan close to the original seems important.

> - apostrophe (authenticity vs correctness - fortunately it's just a lexer

I see somebody tried to add an apostrophe to the SVG version of the flag
on Wikipedia, which was quickly reverted (sadly without a rationale or
citation). A Google Image Search for "DONT TREAD ON ME" shows that both
with-apostrophe and without-apostrophe variants are common, but the ones
without seem more... authentic somehow.

Enough bike-shedding? :)

Yep, sorry, I realise the flag is based on an exclusively American symbol.
OTOH, I'm not (very) American so it still rings bell for me :-)

About the apostrophe: yes, the reason it is currently missing is because it
is missing on the Gadsen flag. That's also the reason the t-shirt is yellow.
I'm getting mixed feedback on how important mimicing the Gadsen flag is, in
terms of:
 - typeface (this is Cardo 99 SIL. Printing on T-shirts occasionally has
problems with small, thin serifs on serif fonts.)
 - color (although I like it because it's a Python-related shirt, and yellow
isn't my favorite color)
 - apostrophe (authenticity vs correctness - fortunately it's just a lexer
problem in "don't" and not the far more expensive parser problems of
your/you're/there/their/they're)

I like Glyph's idea of a credit roll, but I am unsure how to get such data
out of Trac. Is there a way I can just execute low-privilege SELECT queries?

Uh... Oh...

That would be a good feeling of parody, but only for the US patriots or US
history
concerned people (students or experts maybe).

As for me, that t-shirt doesn't say anything, since I
just have been introduced to the concept of "Gadsten's Flag", by you.

I think that design may be popular in US, but ignored in Europe, China or India.

Hmm, I talk like a culturologist...

Perhaps I have not explained well, I'm sorry. I know that "don't" is a
contraction of "do not", but why the text on the flag lacks of the
apostrophe? Does it have a meaning or is it a grammatical error?

It's missing from Laurens Van Houtven's artwork because it's missing
from the Gadsden's Flag artwork that is being parodied. As to why the
original flag doesn't have an apostrophe... it's hard to say:

"DONT THREAD ON ME" is the text on the shirt. "Don't" is a contraction
of "Do not" and requires an apostrophe.
