RE: [U2] uvo.net UvBasic .Net

2005-05-02 Thread Lettau, Jeff
I'm very hopeful that the .NET web applications will be modified to
support data entry speeds that people are used to. But for now it is a
loss in productivity. You say there are several things that can be done
to make the interface better and easier to navigate, but when
programmers are being pushed to complete code on time and under budget,
things get skipped or ignored.
I believe this ties into another topic that went on about a week or so
ago, regarding the re-writing of code. This is a similar issue. When
you re-write the interface you end up loosing things that make the old
interface useful. Maybe with time we will get back what we lost.

If you use some care in design and layout of your windows screens, you
can
make them just as effective as "green screen" apps. Make sure you've set
your tab order to a logical sequence, setup and use shortcut key
combinations that make sense and use something like the down arrow to
activate pick lists within combo boxes. Having a "pretty" interface does
not
mean you must use a mouse. The keyboard works in windows too!
 If all you do is paint pretty pictures and then leave the user to
navigate
with a mouse then yes, your keypunch folks will not be effective.

Unless someone snuck them in when I wasn't looking, you'll have to write

[U2] Unidata Permissions

2005-05-02 Thread Aherne, John
Hi All,
I am using uniobjects to connect to Unidata (6.0) from a web page.
To properly secure it, I would like to be able to set up an account that
would only have access to certain files and only certain fields in those
files. Is there any way to do this? Has anyone done anything similar?

RE: [U2] Unidata Permissions

2005-05-02 Thread Brian Leach
John,

You cannot really restrict access to individual fields within a file other
than at the dictionary (enquiry) level.

What you can do, is to:

 create a new account
 create local dictionary files in that account (using the same names as the
live files you need)
 copy the live dictionary entries into the local dictionaries
 edit the file pointers to include the path to the live data portions

As one way to do this, you could download an evaluation copy of mvQuery and
use the admin facilities to create a reporting account. That effectively
does those stages above.

[U2] Installing Easysoft ODBC-ODBC-Bridge on AIX

2005-05-02 Thread Metherall, Arthur
I'm trying to install the Easysoft ODBC-ODBC-Bridge on an AIX system.

Has anyone done this?

When I define LIBPATH with the Easysoft libraries, for the Easysoft tests to
work, UniData won't run.

$
LIBPATH='$LIBPATH:/usr/local/easysoft/lib:/usr/local/easysoft/oob/client:/usr/local/easysoft/unixODBC/lib:/usr/lib:/lib'
$ export LIBPATH

$ udt
exec(): 0509-036 Cannot load program udt because of the following errors:
0509-150   Dependent module
/usr/local/easysoft/unixODBC/lib/libodbc.a(odbc.so) could not be loaded.

0509-152 Member odbc.so is not found in archive

I know on our old Tru64 system, running a free HP DataDirect ODBC drivers, I
had to recompile UniData. Would I do the same on AIX adding the Easysoft
libraries to the makeudt?

Thanks,

RE: [U2] Setting a Network Printer in Linux

2005-05-02 Thread Anthony Dzikiewicz
Marc,

I hope this comes out formatted so that you can read it. If not, I will try
again for you. Email me direct and I will send it as an attachment.

Here's what I do;

First set up a printer in Linux - network, serial, whatever kind you want -
it doesnt matter. In your case, I guess it is going to be network printer.

In the directory that you are using for Universe spool files; create a
'driver' for the printer that you want to set up

For Example, one of our printers is fuji and our files are located in
/usr/spool/uv.

cd //usr/spool/uv
cat fuji.drv
cat -| lp -dfuji -o "nofilebreak" -s

make sure that the file permissions are correct. I set mine to '777'.

Next, get in to Universe and LOGTO UV - home Universe account. You should
get a SYSADM.MENU

To get to the add printer do; option 4 - Spooler,5 - Device Management, 2 -
Maintain Devices
here is a screen snapshot of our FUJI printer;

+-  Maintain Devices
-+
| File   Action   Help
|
+---
---+
|
|
| Printer Name: FUJIBaud Rate : 9600
|
| Pathname? /dev/null   Parity: None
|
| Driver  : /usr/spool/uv/fuji.drv  CR Mode   : None
|
| Form: FUJITab Expansion : ON
|
| Flow control: XOFF STARTANY OFF FF Delay : No formfeed
|
| Enable Printing : Y   LF Delay  : None
|
| Enable Queuing  : Y   Word Length   : 8
|
| Lock file 1 :
|
| Lock file 2 :
|
| Other Options   :
|
|
|
|
|
+---  Help Region
+
|Enter the Pathname of the device to print to.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
+---
---+

Say 'yes' to changes and 'Yes' to reread spooler configuration.

You will now have your printer set up.

To test,
SETPTR ,,61,0,0,,BRIEF,EJECT,NFMT,FORM FUJI
SH -c '/usr/ibm/uv/bin/usa -p FUJI -F FUJI
LIST DICT whatever_file LPTR

You should see this printing in Linux

For a shortcut, we have a voc record called MOUNT. So, we can issue a
command;
MOUNT FUJI FUJI or
MOUNT FUJI 4PART etc...

That voc is;
: P
0001: PA}02/05/97}tags}Mount a form on a printer
0002: DISPLAY MOUNTING <> ON <>
0003: SH -c '/usr/ibm/uv/bin/usa -p <> -F <>'
0004: UPDATE.VOC.REC <>
Bottom at line 4.
: Q

Hope this helps. Hope this makes sense to you. Be advised that this is
only one way to
set up a printer. You will probably get more than one approach here.

Anthony

Gut reaction without thinking it through too much - what happens if you

Try doing "echo $LIBPATH" before and after setting it. I think that you
will see your problem.

Single quotes, in most shells I know, prevent variable expansion. If
you don't know what I mean, you will after you do the echo's.
