RE: [U2] [UD] Executing save-list

2006-03-29 Thread Bill Haskett
Bruce:

So, I'm guessing you're validating that the SAVE-LIST and SAVE.LIST (and
probably SAVELIST) are all ignoring the local (VOC) file. I misstated, in
my original mail, when I said the modified "SAVE-LIST" works from TCL
because it doesn't; only the "SL" synonym works properly.

Do you have any idea how to override this restrictive handling of verbs, and
make the VOC the primary source for the verbs I identify?

As always, thanks.

Bill

RE: [U2] Shell Escape

2006-03-29 Thread Allen E. Elwood
Well, you could set up a program called SWITCH.CAMPUS or WHEREAMI and have
them execute that, and have it ask for campus and department, and then do a
lookup to see what printer it should use and then execute SETPTR.

Attach that to their logon proc and you've got a fairly idiot proof
procedure. (note, no procedure if fully idiot proof, as in PEBKAC)

Dropping the card rate is not enough if this is the problem - you need a
different card

In some cases a different driver version, alternate driver from another
supplier (these card's are widely OEMed but the drivers from different
hardware suppliers are often subtly different but compatible). As always
take great care with changing a production system. there is no guarantee
that different (wrong?) drivers won't go west big-time.

Connecting from the console when you have network connection problems is
usually the "gold standard" for testing - please use 127.0.0.1 as the
address and not any name or other IP address when testing in this way.

Wide-zero is a Universe-specific feature so wouldn't affect UniData

I'm baffled - adding additional prints to the code suggests that both

A-B =
0 but that A is greater than B.

If you change the assignment of B to B = 4.58 - 4.59 then it works fine,

B = 0 - 0.01 still fails

UniBasic code that should work

The results of the following code are proving to be troublesome:

 A = 4.57 + (-4.58)
 B = (-0.01)
 PRINT 'TEST ONE: ARE ':A:' AND ':B:' THE SAME? ':
 IF A = B THEN
PRINT 'YES'
 END ELSE
PRINT 'NO'
 END

 A = OCONV(A,'MD20')
 B = OCONV(B,'MD20')
 PRINT 'TEST TWO: ARE ':A:' AND ':B:' THE SAME? ':
 IF A = B THEN
PRINT 'YES'
 END ELSE
PRINT 'NO'
 END

You would expect both tests to return 'YES', but in fact, only the
second test returns 'YES'.

TEST ONE: ARE -0.01 AND -0.01 THE SAME? NO TEST TWO: ARE -0.01 AND
-0.01 THE SAME? YES

Is there something simple that I am missing?

Re: [U2] Shell Escape

2006-03-29 Thread Jerry Banker
Why not just use the SETPTR command? We use a table of users that contains
options each user is allowed, one is for their default printer. When someone
logs in the login paragraph runs a program that sets up the user checking
this file for the users default settings. We use the SETPTR command option
AT to give them a default printer location. We also have a program that does
the same thing, it is executed when for some reason a report has been
printed to a different location (landscape printer, etc.) by the user.

QUESTION:
Is there a way to change a user's environment variable setting from within
UniData so that we could set the printer that the user wishes to use for
that session?

BACKGROUND:
We're using UniData 6.0.11 with Datatel's Colleague on UNIX, primary shell
is ksh. As the system starts we used to allow a menu prior to loading
Unidata that allowed users to change their $PRINTER.

ISSUE:
We'd like to do this from within UniData. It appears that the shell escape
(!) filters out the source (.) of a UNIX script.

This,
:!. /path/to/script PRINTER
Fails to send in the PRINTER as an argument but it is essentially what I'd
like to do. The PRINTER is just the string "PRINTER" that was/is expected
to

allow the script to decide on the action in a case statement.

Thanks in advance.

Colin,

Thank you, I'd completely forgotten about Float.Precision.

Changing from (the default) setting of zero to any of the other settings
(1-4) sorts it out - although it took three passes through the HELP to

I'm just slightly amazed that something this simple fails on the default
setting and that I don't recall seeing this in UniData before, but I must
have because the LOGIN paras in my clients' production accounts include it -

This could be fixed by multiplying the number by 100
so that floating points aren't used at all. (If you
know for sure you will never have more than 2

I once saw a similar problem where a locate on a list
of appartements for 1 would find appartment 1E0 as a
match. (On Universe).

I sounds like UniBASIC is doing "proper" floating point math and the
example has hit one ore more values that are tough to represent
"exactly".

If you concatenate a null to the end, then it works,

Because now they're strings.

but adding a zero to each side of the IF A = B THEN does not change
the outcome.

Back to floating point "in-exactness"

I have no explanation, and it does scare me just a bit.

I think folks coming from a C/Pascal background aren't too suprised.
Back in those days, I regularly re-used a "floatequal" macro that
just made sure that (a-b) was less than a defined tolerance value. I
think that's part of the reason for the popularity of "fixed point"
notation in the days before FPU's became ubiquitous.

In Grad School, I had one project that suffered so much from floating
point round off, that I had to switch to an arbitrary precision math
library. All the math was done in Base256, so it was easy to just
tack on an extra byte to get an extra "digit" of precision. Think
School House Rock's "Hey Little Twelve Toes" times 21-1/3.

  END ELSE
 PRINT 'NO'
  END

  A = OCONV(A,'MD20')
  B = OCONV(B,'MD20')
  PRINT 'TEST TWO: ARE ':A:' AND ':B:' THE SAME? ':
  IF A = B THEN
 PRINT 'YES'
  END ELSE
 PRINT 'NO'
  END

You would expect both tests to return 'YES', but in fact, only the
second test returns 'YES'.

TEST ONE: ARE -0.01 AND -0.01 THE SAME? NO TEST TWO: ARE -0.01 AND
-0.01 THE SAME? YES

Is there something simple that I am missing?

RE: [U2] Unidata Errors

I'm surprised. The screen that you sent looked like there was
something wacky going on there. You certain you checked the VOC in
the right account?

>Defragmenting the disk seems like a good idea, but why
>would disk fragmentation cause shared memory to be "not reliable?"

I don't know all the internals of shared memory, but I would suspect
that there's disk cache in the mix. As a Windows drive gets fragged
the potential for disk errors to lead to unreliable memory seems
plausible. I must apologize, when I said defrag what I meant was to
check the disk to ensure that there were no errors. The defrag may
improve the performance, but it's the consistency of the filesystem
that is the more crucial question.

> We think we looked for memory errors in the HP Integrated Management
Logs, but found none.

You "think" you looked? ;-) This is something you're gonna want some
certainty about.

>Thanks for the response. BTW is there a searchable archive of the
listserv postings?

I'll leave that question to someone who knows more about that issue.

I got the same results as Kevin on UD 5.1.28. UD thinks A > B!

TEST ONE:
A='-0.01'
B='-0.01'
A > B
A+0 > B+0
A:'' = B:''
TEST TWO: ARE -0.01 AND -0.01 THE SAME? YES

Tom

Wow, Piers, absolutely true. I just ran on UD6PE and it fails exactly
as described. If you concatenate a null to the end, then it works,
but adding a zero to each side of the IF A = B THEN does not change
the outcome. Simplifying the math (as you described) does not change
the outcome.

RE: [U2] RE: UniBasic code that should work

2006-03-29 Thread colin.alfke
In UniData see HELP FLOAT.PRECISION. Here is a website that explains
some of the problems with using floating point math:
.

I ran across this a couple years back when a colleague updated an A/R
report to not print 0.00 values - but it still did.

Informix (at that time) explained it as a feature that you had these
options to use to change how the results from mathematical operations
were returned.

I still haven't wrapped my mind around the fact that every single way
you have to look at these values (print, crt, written to a file, viewed
in the debugger, len, etc) made them look the same - but they would not
return TRUE if tested to be the same.

I've always thought that it seemed to be pretty similar to the problem
Intel had with the P60/P66 processors

Bruce: The first thing I'd be doing is a guide on the VOC file and

down the system and defragging the disk. And finally, if you have any
system memory diagnostics, I'd be digging out the manuals.

[U2] Unidata Errors

We recently had Unidata generate the following errors on our production

We are running Unidata 6.1.9 on Windows 2003 Enterprise.

RE: [U2] FILE RESIZE

2006-03-29 Thread Brian Leach
David,

Kevin is right (as always) - but you didn't say whether you are running UD
or UV. On UV the equivalent is to use uvfixfile to verify the structure.

uvfixfile also has a fix option, but make sure you take a backup of the file
(at the OS level) before you try it, in case it goes horribly wrong..

I've also been seeing a number of problems with the uv resize command not
working on Win2003 machines, but haven't tracked down anything specific. It
seems to be something to do with another system-level process holding the
file at the time. Try again a few hours later and it works. Don't you hate
those type of issues...
Anyone else have any light to shed?

Regards,

Brian

RE: [U2] RE: UniBasic code that should work

2006-03-29 Thread Piers Angliss
OP doesn't say which database, except that UniBasic suggests UniData and on
my machine it works fine in Universe but as described in UniData (5.2.3 on
RHL)!

Wide-zero is a Universe-specific feature so wouldn't affect UniData

I'm baffled - adding additional prints to the code suggests that both
variables are of equal length consisting of the same characters, that A-B =
0 but that A is greater than B.

If you change the assignment of B to B = 4.58 - 4.59 then it works fine, but
B = 0 - 0.01 still fails

If you step through with the UniBasic debugger everything still appears the
same, but this time it works correctly !!

Any UniData gurus out there who can suggest an explanation ?

Piers

UniBasic code that should work

The results of the following code are proving to be troublesome:

  A = 4.57 + (-4.58)
  B = (-0.01)
  PRINT 'TEST ONE: ARE ':A:' AND ':B:' THE SAME? ':
  IF A = B THEN
 PRINT 'YES'
  END ELSE
 PRINT 'NO'
  END

  A = OCONV(A,'MD20')
  B = OCONV(B,'MD20')
  PRINT 'TEST TWO: ARE ':A:' AND ':B:' THE SAME? ':
  IF A = B THEN
 PRINT 'YES'
  END ELSE
 PRINT 'NO'
  END

You would expect both tests to return 'YES', but in fact, only the
second test returns 'YES'.
