Re: [U2] Corrupt universe files

2006-05-23 Thread Ray Wurlod
Not all corruptions are fixable. For example, if a disk utility truncated the
file, what was truncated is lost forever.

Did you run fixtool with the -fix option? It won't fix anything unless you do.

As for repair with filepeek, it begins with understanding exactly what you are
looking at. The filepeek utility is primarily a hex editor, with which you can
change (damage?) any part of the file. There is no "exact logic", as it all
depends on exactly what's wrong with the file. For example, is it throwing
BLINK errors? If not, what errors is it throwing?

Finally, before using any of these utilities, it is vital to back up the file,
even though it may be corrupted. Using the utilities you can do great damage
if you do not know what you are doing, and even more if you do!

Hi Perry

The impact of record locking with transactions can be dependent on the
isolation level. However in my experience there is no problem with
doing
the record locking before you start the transaction boundary.

RE: [U2] Corrupt universe files

2006-05-23 Thread Brad Davis
One thing you may try is to dump the records to a sequential file. What
I've done in the past is to write out the table using a key like
account*table*id*record.  Something like this

SELECT TABLE
LOOP
READNEXT ID ELSE EXIT
READ RECORD FROM TABLE,ID ELSE CONTINUE
LINE=ACCOUNT
LINE<2>=FILENAME
LINE<3>=LOWER(ID)   ; *just in case
LINE<4>=LOWER(RECORD)
WRITESEQ LINE ON FIX.FILE ON ERROR...
REPEAT

(2) clear the table
(3) repopulate the table

LOOP
READSEQ LINE FROM FIX.FILE ON ERROR...
ACCOUNT=LINE<1>
FILENAME=LINE<2>
ID=RAISE(LINE<3>)
RECORD=RAISD(LINE<4>)
WRITE RECORD ON TABLE,ID...
REPEAT

This works if you can read the record. I recommend backing up things...

RE: [U2] Changed BASIC varname<1,-1>

2006-05-23 Thread Allen E. Elwood
Hi Guys,

Wellfwiw...I consider this correct.

If I have multiple variable dataset that I'm creating I want them to stay in
synch even if one of them is blank.

i.e.

ITEM.SHIPPED<1,-1>  = REC<1>
QTY.SHIPPED<1,-1>   = REC<2>
HANDLING.CODE<1,-1> = REC<3>

Lets say that there was no special handling code on the third iteration.
Now my forth iteration DOES have a special handling code, but now it would
appear as if it belonged to the third, not the forth item.

I would have to
ITEM.SHIPPED<1,-1>  = REC<1>
QTY.SHIPPED<1,-1>   = REC<2>
IF REC<3> = "" THEN
  HANDLING.CODE<1,-1> := REC<3>
END ELSE
  HANDLING.CODE<1,-1> = REC<3>
END

Which adds a lot of bulk to the code, especially if I have a lot of
variables to build.

Oh Well, you know that they say..."One man's bug is another man's feature!"

If you want them to stay in sync, keep a pointer variable and update
each multivalue in tandem using the variable (which points to the mv
position) rather than use -1. Personally, I think -1 is fine if
there's only one array; if there are multiple to keep in tandem -1 is
a yellow flag, fraught with all sorts of impending data corruption.

I use the pointer method when I can, hopefully one of the attributes will
  always be non-null, otherwise you waste an attribute. But it beats when

Oh yeah, sure. I agree. Using LOCATE or FOR/NEXT is my preferred method,
but the <-1> does come in handy in some cases, and actually was the main
point of the original posting (see bottom in case you weren't following this
thread)

I recently had to keep datasets aligned coming in from two different
sources, one sub-multivalue, the other just multivalued, so they had to have
separate FOR/NEXT LOCATE routines with the SMV loop nested in the MV loops
subroutine. Oh, yeah, this was *fun*...heh...(mvBASE code)

The output is eventually to be used to adjust inventory at the LOT/PART
level if shipping does not match allocation.

BUILD.PART.LOT.ARRAY:
  *
  * Build array of SHIPPED LOTS/PARTS and their quantities from incoming
*SMV* format
  SVM.COUNT = DCOUNT(ORD.REC<116,J>,@SM)

  ORDERED.QTYS  = INSERT(ORDERED.QTYS,  LP.INDEX, 1, 1, 0)
END
  NEXT PL.I
  *
  * Build array of ORDERED LOTS/PARTS and their quantities
  IF ORD.REC<11,J> > "" THEN ; *If Ordered part number exists THEN
PART.LOT = PART.NBR:'*':LOT.NBR
LOCATE PART.LOT IN BOTH.PARTLOTS SETTING LP.INDEX THEN
  IF BOTH.PARTLOTS = PART.LOT THEN

If you want them to stay in sync, keep a pointer variable and update
each multivalue in tandem using the variable (which points to the mv
position) rather than use -1. Personally, I think -1 is fine if
there's only one array; if there are multiple to keep in tandem -1 is
a yellow flag, fraught with all sorts of impending data corruption.

[U2] Problem with Canon ImageRunner 5000 Printer

2006-05-23 Thread Kevin King
I have a client with a Canon ImageRunner 5000 printer on a Win NT
network w/ Unidata 5.2. The printer works fine under Windows apps,
but printing from Unidata it acts strangely.

This printer has 4 paper trays, two for letter, one for legal, and one
for 11x17. The printer is configured for the default profile with
override disabled, meaning that anything that doesn't particularly
state otherwise should be printed on 8 1/2 x 11, portrait, single
sided, etc. Yet, anything that prints from Unidata will only print on
11 x 17, 4 pages per sheet, duplex. (This is one of the profiles, but
that profile is not selected and profile override is disabled.)

We have tried just about everything we can think of to get this
printer to select the letter paper tray, including sending all of the
PCL codes (yes, the printer does accept PCL codes) and yet when the
PCL requests the letter tray, it does select the right tray but then
it errors out (on the printer console) stating to load 11 x 17 into
that bin. The only options at that point are to cancel the print job
or select the 11 x 17 paper tray.

I have verified that the printer driver is configured to send RAW and
have even gone as far as to changing the printer driver in Windows (on
the Unidata server) to use the Generic / Text Only driver sending the
output to the appropriate IP address, but still the printer insists on
11 x 17. I've printed to a file (via changing the printer output
destination to FILE:) and examined the output to ensure that no extra
PCL is being introduced, but the printer file has nothing other than
what I've sent it and still the printer insists on 11 x 17.
Furthermore I've tried printing to two separate IR5000 devices with
the exact same configuration and it works consistently [wrong] on both
devices, yet printing to a Canon 400 series works perfectly. I've
checked and double checked the printer defaults and configuration on
the Unidata server, and as far as I can tell it is setup properly to
use the default profile with no override and print the right paper
with the right options. Yet, when sending output to the printer, it
continues to insist on 11 x 17.

It looks like the printer is encapsulating the job in an outer shell
that is by default 4 pages per sheet on 11 x 17, duplexed, and this is
only for jobs sent via Unidata. This is not, of course, what we want.
We simply want to print the printer like every other printer and have
it accept the same PCL that works on earlier Canon models.

Any advice?

The output is eventually to be used to adjust inventory at the LOT/PART
level if shipping does not match allocation.

When it comes to the IR's and tray selection,
try using the PJL, it's great. It allows you utilize all the
   functionality of the copier, including stapling and hole punch
   if equiped.

Which codes are you using?

I'm showing &lxH  (that's a lower case L)

AUTO = 7
TRAY2 = 5 - RIGHT DECK
TRAY3 = 1 - LEFT DECK
TRAY4 = 4 - UPPER CASSETTE
TARY5 = 6 - LOWER CASSETTE
TRAY6 = 8 - SIDE DECK
TRAY1 = 2 - STACK BYPASS

RE: [U2] Problem with Canon ImageRunner 5000 Printer

2006-05-23 Thread colin.alfke
My first guess is that the bin you are selecting to print letter is
actually for the 11x17. Try changing it to capture to a file and print
using a windows app and check the PCL codes for how it selects the bin,
or simply try each PCL sequence until it prints from the correct bin.

However, you said it errors out. Perhaps there is some code that is
trying to set the page size that is invalid for the 400 series and is
ignored there but is causing the grief here. Or the default measurement
(decipoints/dots/etc) is different between the printers.

Good luck, don't know about you but I'm really wishing the "paperless"
office actually worked.

Done, and here's the mystery: If I send the EXACT codes from a

print on 11 x 17.

I've verified the measurements (actually this was one of the codes
from the Win PCL) and as I mentioned I've sent the exact codes through
Unidata that went to the printer from a quick test message printed via
the Notepad app, and while the Notepad app prints perfectly, the

Is there a way to set the windows driver to raw? I wonder if the
driver is adding something which is causing it require the larger
paper?

Also, did you try turning off the printer, then print from UD. If
it works, then it's a setting that you will need to disable that is
not being sent.

Have you tried to send your Unidata output to the &HOLD& file.

And then using the '^' edit command to check for any unknown command
strings?

If none, then bypass the spooler and send the &hold& file directly thru
windoze?

Paperless future? You did hear about the upcoming elections somewhere
in the USA, where they have to keep their fancy new electronic voting
machines in storage, because the new machines don't produce a paper
audit trail and the local judges banned the new machines use. Somewhere
in California, I think.

2006-05-23 Thread Bob Woodward
First off, disclaimer: I've not worked with Canon printers or Unidata
so you get to take the following with about a BAG full of salt.

Do you have separator pages defined in the printer definition? On the
HP's that I have experience with, we create different printer id's for
one physical printer that use different separator page setups to get
portrait/landscape/normal/compressed combinations that we want. If you
have one of these that you're not aware of, it might be causing the
problem you're having.

RE: [U2] Problem with Canon ImageRunner 5000 Printer

2006-05-23 Thread colin.alfke
Ouch.

Did you use the same "printer" for both Notepad and UD? The same user?
Have you tried eliminating all of the PCL codes to see how the "default"
is actually working?
Do you have the printer defined on the UD server as a local printer?
Have you tried sending the job straight to the unc path?

Last ditch effort. Use "NET USE" to point LPTR to the printer. Pull up
something in DOS EDIT and print. IBM has told me this is the same
mechanism that UD uses to print. Then you can at least rule UD and the
App out of the equation - generally makes it easier to deal with the
client. I've only had to do it to prove the security settings aren't
correct, never to deal with PCL/bins etc, so YMMV.

Sounds like you've tried most of this. Hopefully something here might
trigger something new.

Kevin:

It sounds like you've identified that the output from UD is exactly what it
should be to print to the correct bin. You might take the spooled output
and send it directly to the printer (with the binary option) to prove the UD
output is correct. e.g. "copy /b SpoolFile \\PS123456\P2" (if you're using
a hardware print server).

If this prints correctly, I've found sometimes I have to adjust the printer
settings themselves to work with U2 (and D3), because sometimes what works
in Windows doesn't always work in MV.

[U2] [UV] Veritas and UniVerse?

2006-05-23 Thread David Wolverton
I have a client telling me that the UniVerse server is crashing when Veritas
Backup Exec is trying to back it up at night.

They are having to do a hard reboot every morning, and have no backup to
boot!

Veritas Backup Exec 10d with tape drive running on a different server.
UniVerse is 10.1 and has 'Remote Backup Agent' running on it. My UniVerse
vendor said there may be an 'environment variable conflict' issue they
thought they heard of.

Anything more precise that anyone knows of?

Re: [U2] Changed BASIC varname<1,-1>

2006-05-23 Thread Kate Stanton

Thanks Ray.

We have (stupidly, it seems) relied on the -1 behaviour, using it when I
want to add a subfield if there is data, but not to add a blank subfield.

I shall report this as a bug, but if the change in behaviour of user number
is any guide, I don't expect much response. (sigh!)

Cheers,  Kate

It's been around for a long time, which is why $OPTIONS EXTRA.DELIM
exists. I don't often work in Pick flavor, so can't speak authoritatively
as to what proper default behaviour ought to be. But what you describe
is, was, and should be the default behaviour in the non-Pick flavors.

Re: [U2] Changed BASIC varname<1,-1>

2006-05-23 Thread Kate Stanton

Is was not a bug, it was a feature!

We use it to add a subfield if there is data, but not to add blank
subfields.  Great!

New behaviour is not as if $OPTIONS EXTRA.DELIM is set (thanks Ray), as it
only adds one extra delim. Still not suitable when keeping several items in
synch.

Someone once told me not to use <1,-1> just because of this problem but to
use a counter var.
   K += 1
  MV <1,K>  = datawhat

I have not tested this, but looks like you have the scenario to validate
this.

Wellfwiw...I consider this correct.

If I have multiple variable dataset that I'm creating I want them to stay
in

synch even if one of them is blank.

i.e.

ITEM.SHIPPED<1,-1>  = REC<1>
QTY.SHIPPED<1,-1>   = REC<2>
HANDLING.CODE<1,-1> = REC<3>

Lets say that there was no special handling code on the third iteration.
Now my forth iteration DOES have a special handling code, but now it
would

appear as if it belonged to the third, not the forth item.

I would have to
ITEM.SHIPPED<1,-1>  = REC<1>
QTY.SHIPPED<1,-1>   = REC<2>
IF REC<3> = "" THEN
  HANDLING.CODE<1,-1> := REC<3>
END ELSE
  HANDLING.CODE<1,-1> = REC<3>
END

Which adds a lot of bulk to the code, especially if I have a lot of
variables to build.

Oh Well, you know that they say..."One man's bug is another man's
feature!"

(Or woman!)

Goo'day, Kate,

Just quickly... IIRC, somebody mentioned a UV OPTION to give you either
which way... Last week or so. Sorry, but check the archives

And some people say various LOCATEs are a problem but I find this
inserting a null to be a bigger bugger

It is set to raw, yes.

The printer prints everything but from UD just fine. And I'm not sure
how sending a print job to a printer that is off is going to solve
anything. ;-)

Yes, I have tried this, and what comes out in the _HOLD_ file is
exactly what we are sending, nothing extra. I've even configured the
Windows printer to output to FILE: and the results are the same,
nothing extra added in.

>Do you have separator pages defined in the printer definition?

They're called "profiles" on the Canon printer, and we have set the
appropriate profile for the configuration we want and have disabled
overrides so it is theoretically impossible for any other profile to
be selected.

Yes on both counts.

Same result, output to 11 x 17, but only from UD. It's impossible to
see a "default" for Notepad, it's gonna send PCL no matter what and
I'm not sure how to turn that off.

>Do you have the printer defined on the UD server as a local printer?

Nope, network printer.

>Have you tried sending the job straight to the unc path?

Didn't try that, actually. Not sure how to do that exactly.

>Last ditch effort. Use "NET USE" ...

This might be worth a try. Unfortunately, I've been driving home from
the site for the past several hours so this will have to wait until
I'm onsite again.

Thanks to everyone for the input!

A good thought yes, but that was the first place I looked when the
problem was first reported. We verified that the printer preferences
on the ud server are using the default profile (which contains all of
the printer settings we want) and yet the results are completely
different.
