RE: [U2] Universe PE - Fail to install

2007-09-30 Thread John Jenkins
Nothing specific - but a number of database providers (including U2) suggest
turning off Hyper Threading in the BIOS - it may solve your problem.

Any questions on why a hardware issue could affect software running under an
O.S. and a BIOS please call Intel and Microsoft.

BIOS (Basic Input Output System)is supposed to hide any dependencies (yes -
right - sure)

Let us know whether it works for you - there's a fair chance.

Regards

JayJay

Sara,
I'm running it on HT (Hyper Threading) and on Core Duo (T2050).

[U2] [OT] html version of Nelson's 1965 paper available

2007-09-30 Thread Dawn Wolthuis
For those interested in either history or theory...

Keith Johnson did a super job of putting Don Nelson's 1965 GIRLS paper
into html format. See http://tincat-group.com/mv/girls.html

This should give better access to more people, once it gets indexed
and all. I still find it interesting that Nelson uses the phrase
"relational terminology" when the connection between databases and
mathematical relations is thought to originate with Codd, if I
understand correctly. If anyone grasps whether what Nelson wrote
should invalidate that notion or not, I'm curious.

Keith asked me to proofread, which I did too quickly, so if you do
spot any errors, please let both Keith and me know so we can correct
it.

Enjoy! --dawn

[U2] [AD] UniVerse Admin [/AD]

2007-09-30 Thread Charles Barouch

All,
I will be teaching a UniVerse Admin class online starting on
Tuesday. It will be 7:00 PM (US Eastern) sessions, to make it more
friendly to other time zones. The class runs for 4 sessions, it costs
$600, and you can sign up here:
http://www.intl-spectrum.com/tabid/159/univ/7/default.aspx.
We had a good turn out last time it was offered and I hope to see a
good turnout again.
