Re: [U2] UniObjects.Net error message

2011-05-31 Thread Hona, David
Is this a new program/process? Do it is just stop working?

Does it rely upon label common variables, file hands/variables, etc which
perhaps aren't defined when calling it via your call?

Subject: [U2] UniObjects.Net error message

I wonder if anyone can assist with this problem:
We are using UniObjects.Net with Universe 10.3 on under AIX 5.3.
A web request is returning an error about a subroutine failing to complete:

[IBM U2][UODOTNET - UNICLIENT][ErrorCode=30107] The subroutine failed to
complete successfully

It works successfully with other web requests, and the format of the request is
correct.
The apiserver log file reveals that the request was received, but has this line
after the request details:

ICSubCall UVSETJMP returncode=30107.

When I run the request using a Universe request emulation program that calls
the same subroutine, it works correctly and the output is correctly formatted.

Thanks for any help or suggestions you may have.

Out of curiosity, is there anywhere that has a comprehensive Multi-Value

Something like the Relational DB comparison on

Re: [U2] Pondering recent thread on compact framework

2011-05-31 Thread Dan McGrath
While you have a lot of great points in here Tony.

I have to strongly disagree with the "Don't ask why, just get on the
bandwagon"

Asking "why" doesn't mean you won't do it. Asking why is fundamental to
understanding the real reasons. If you don't understand the real
reasons, you are doing no better than providing your own limited
interpretation of the users actually want and run the very real risk of
providing a solution that you "think" is what they want (for example, it
provides a GUI) as opposed to a solution the users really want.

Don't just find out 'what' the users want to achieve, understand 'why'
as well.

That is, unless you have the holy grail of users that are able to
perfectly articulate the solution that works for them each and every
time.

Dan

What a conversation indeed. Dove-tailing with Symeon's note, technology
is irrelevant, always is, it's the applications that are relevant. Find
some app worth creating, and generate revenue selling it. That's the
bottom line. Many of you are employed to provide intranet solutions but
many of you, or your companies, derive income by providing solutions to
a wider audience. We earn our income by selling what THEY want. Find
out what that is and sell it to them. If you work for a company, find
out what your management wants, and then provide it. This notion of
trying to come up with an app to sell is kinda backwards - especially if
the only thing you can think of (or know about) are games.

I haven't responded to this thread recently because I've been doing some
travelling around the country. One of my activities has been to do
demos and get field feedback for a new SMS/texting-based service I've
written backed by MV. (Universe may be used for international/unicode
support.) We're not using "apps" because I don't want to get involved
in the issues associated with Java or Objective-C, device-specific
limitations, or mobile OS release issues. I need to pick low-hanging
fruit.
I'm not even jumping on the HTML5/CSS3 bandwagon yet. With 7 billion
people on this planet, there are over 5 billion mobile devices in use.
A significant percentage does not have internet access. While all the
ads are for flashy app-driven devices, I believe most of the devices
used today are very basic, sold without internet service plans. Most
(I'll dare to say) users and devices make use of SMS/texting, and
statistics for billions of text messages per day worldwide support a
focus on that market.

There are two points here.

First, it all starts with the application, and all of us are involved
with business apps in one way or another. If anyone here can't come up
with a reason to use a mobile device, just ask "real users". In my
recent travels it was hard to keep up with the ideas that people had for
using my software (and they don't know or care that it's MV or BASIC on
the server). As a result of the feedback, we're planning of kicking off
several small "verticalized" businesses in addition to supporting a more
horizontal consumer offering. Users are in a better position than
technologists to express how they use devices for business.
People in this forum might not be able to come up with applications for
mobile devices, but end-users sure as heck can.
Talk to them! Find out what your users (or prospects) need!
Don't feed people with technology ("how can we use mobile?"), ask people
what problems THEY need to solve and ask if mobile would help.

Second, if you think more in terms of Data, what you deal with every
day, then the deployment method is totally irrelevant - and it's subject
to change over time anyway. The thing about Mobile is that it's Mobile,
not so much that it's pretty. Focus on the benefits and dynamics of
mobile computing first, and the specifics of the UI can be discussed
after you have designed a paradigm for retrieving server data from a
mobile client. We're starting with SMS - we might later introduce
device-specific apps as an enhancement, but we're Mobile first and app
developers second.

When GUI first arrived on the scene people in these MV forums were
asking "why GUI?" and "what would I do with a GUI?" Even now people
still ask "how do I create a GUI?". Overall, we're in the business of
Data Processing with a solid engine for development and execution of
business rules, not User Interface Processing. UI's change continuously
over time. Don't ask W

Re: [U2] Video Quirk

2011-05-31 Thread Israel, John R.
I was not going to go into a lot of detail as to HOW I determine a bad E-mail
recipient, but for those that want it, here is what I do:
Every 3 hours between 6AM and 6PM, a script runs on our Exchange server to
export all the valid corporate E-mails addresses and aliases. This is ftp'ed
to our UNIX/UniData box.
Every 3 hours +10 minutes, cron runs a job to load this data into a file called
ALIASES. The 06:10 run clears the file out, but all other runs append only.
This ensures that new values are added, but the file is never empty (even for a
moment) during working hours.
Cron then runs a 2nd program to compare known files/fields against the ALIASES
file. If there is no "@" sign in the value being tested, it must be a network
ID (which works for internal E-mails) AND it must be found in the ALIASES file.
If the value being tested contains an "@" sign, the program assumes it is
valid (I cannot validate E-mail accounts for outside sources).

My NEW program (which has the minor video problem) looks at key files/fields
for E-mail recipients and will run AFTER the one described above. We have
inherited some domains/E-mails as we have acquired other companies and these
addresses are all still valid. However, our PREFERRED corporate email always
ends in "@daytonsuperior.com".

My new program treats the inherited companies/E-mails as errors so that we can
pro-actively find everyone not using the preferred corporate E-mail standard.
Eventually, the old ones will go away, and I want my data clean long before
that happens. These values (plus any others that failed the other tests) are
loaded into WORK<1> and the new SB process is called to display them and enter
the desired replacement value. These replacement values MUST exist in the
ALIASES file and either not have an "@" sign (a network ID) or end in
"@daytonsuperior.com".

The video quirk appears as soon as the SB process (input screen) finishes. It
is not caused by control values. It is the same sort of thing that often
happens with the debugger. It does no harm, but is annoying.

Re: [U2] Video Quirk

Hi John,

Are you validating the existence of the address or just structure? I use
a Thunderbird addon to verify address existence, but an automated
verification would be icing on the cake.

Thanks,
Charlie Noah

Does anyone know how to manually re-set the colors to go back to the normal
ones?

John,
The data you are managing probably has control character sequences. For
display purposes, you should replace all characters below char(32) with
".".

For reseting the colors, try HELP BASIC @

[U2] Infoflo INV.INDEX

2011-05-31 Thread Martin Braid
All files ending in INDEX are updated via the SB dictionary function /FD
(filename) F10, XREF and Define.

Initially, the index file is created and built here, thereafter the
operating system maintains it as long as the SB screen has the Write
Flag set.

(If not, then it needs to be updated via a manual call to
SB.UPDATE.BTREE as per IIWRITE)

In your example, this maintains DICT INV $CROSS.REF

i.e. if a record is created/changed/deleted, the matching index (if
affected) is created/changed/deleted also.
