Re: [U2] Universe and SQL

2011-12-10 Thread David Jordan
You can use BCI and it works effectively. You can write basic programs to
select and update data on other databases. EDA is another option where you
could treat an RDBMS as if it were a UniVerse file.

I see a lot of stuff on Universe accessing it's own files as SQL tables, and
also on how you can use OLE to access Universe tables using SQL.

But can Universe, access SQL tables which are *not* in Universe?
They are just other SQL tables in other places around the network that usually
is update by other non Pick software.

Can Universe also access those tables?

2011-12-10 Thread Kathleené M Hunter
I do not believe that I have been clear on this issue.

Have a current server windows 2003/ UniVerse 10.0.21 where everything works.
All user are directed to the live account when then login. There are no
entries in the UV.LOGINS. There is a register entry in "UvAccount" which
contains the account name that is in UV.ACCOUNT.

On a New server windows 2008 R2 / UniVerse 10.3.10 set it up the same way
and it does not work. So then I added the users to the UV.LOGIN and have
they go to the live account but it does not work no matter what user policy
is picked ( Home, Any, UV). I have stopped and restated the service after
each change.

Hi Kathleen
Try any directory. You will run into a problem with UAC in Windows and will
have to set it to the lowest security level and then reboot. Then try
changing the directory and see if that works.

The uniadmin telnet area is where you resolve this. It is currently
pointing at their login directory on windows. You have options to change to

When you say "...does not work", what does that mean? With networking all
kinds of things are happening and isolating the problem is imperative.

For instance, in order for anyone to log into our UD server, running on
Windows 2008 R2, they need to have a Windows user and be a member of the
appropriate group(s) (those given to the dbms directory). Active Directory
adds a level of abstraction, but you should be able to create a simple
domain user who has access to the machine. Anyway, once the user is created
and they're a member of the same group that the dbms directory gives "full"
privileges to, then you should be able to log in to the UV account (I can in
UD). When I make a telnet connection I should be able to see the UV login
prompts. This is also where problems might arise; if you can't see the UV
login prompts your problems are prior to the user/group and UV login issue.

So, I guess my question is; can you be more specific regarding your
problems? e.g. what appears, what you've tried, what were the results, etc?

From what I remember, this is always a pig, in that you set it up,
forget about it, and then when you again set up a new server, it bites
you again.

BY DEFAULT iirc, telnetd tries to put you in your home directory, which
is why you're getting the "this is not a UV account" messages. Somehow,
you need to tell it to put all users in the same default account, not
their home directory.

You might need to edit the Windows directory ... hope this gives some
clues to someone else to tell you exactly what's going on ...

Re: [U2] UniVerse/NT default login account

2011-12-10 Thread Bill Haskett
Are you running AD? I've set up Windows 2003 & Windows 2008 R2 many
times and there are are hundred things I did to set it up. Mostly,
installs are "run as administrator" (installed in "E:\U2\ud"). Dbms
servers are separate machines. Permissions are set up for each user to
be the same as the UD accounts (all my UD accounts are installed under
"E:\UDAccounts"). I've not had a problem with this. It's very
difficult to troubleshoot this kind of thing from back-to-front (i.e.
"It doesn't work! What's wrong?").

Secondly, things aren't set up the same on Windows 2008 R2 as they are
in Windows 2003. As others have noted, there's the whole UAC thing
that's another layer of complexity thrown on top of everything else.
IIS has a completely different interface. SMTP is run as an older
version. This is why I always install everything by right-clicking on
the install executable and "run as administrator".

So, my recommendation is to review everything (or as best as one can)
that was done to set up the server, install UV, create users and assign
groups, assign permissions to UV accounts, and manage telnet (the UV
telnet while the MS telnet is disabled).

Bill

2011-12-10 Thread Robert Houben
I was trying to think what we had to deal with on W2008R2 that gave us similar
grief, and it just came to me. You must make sure that the users you are
working with actually have permissions to the directory where the UV/UD
accounts are. They WILL NOT by default when these are in a directory of the
root of the system drive on W2008R2! This will result in the error you are
seeing, as you will have your default directory in the right place but will not
be able to access anything. This includes the VOC. Since you can't access the
voc, the assumption for the uv/ud shell is that there *is* no VOC there, and
hence the message.

Actually log onto your server as that user or use runas with cmd to see if you
can access the directories that you believe you need.
