Tom de Grunt was doing some work in this area. His website is at
http://www.degrunt.net . I think he ended up writing C libraries for the
ActiveRecord support.

I also seem to remember a thread a couple or five months back about
enhancement requests for ROR and U2. Haven't seen anything about it

RE: [U2] AE editor replacement

2008-02-27 Thread Dave Walker
Took quite a while for me to find where I got the info on
PREPROG/POSTPROG_AE, but my fading middle-aged memory finally kicked in. On
our dev box, /usr/ud/sys/AE_SECURITY contains several text files explaining
how to implement security measures. The path may be different depending on
your install. Doesn't look like they've changed since 1998/AE v. 3.2. But
they do still seem to work. There are also examples of each subroutine.

RE: [U2] AE editor replacement

2008-02-27 Thread Dave Walker
You can actually log changes to the database with AE, as well as just about
anything else you can think of that you can write in a BASIC program. Look
into PREPROG_AE and POSTPROG_AE. These are subroutines that, if cataloged,
run everytime the editor is run. We used them to disable saves in the
production unless they've been specifically approved by an administrator,
and to log ALL datachanges to the production server. (SOX, ya know.)

you can tell at install, but that's a bit late..)

(2) I want to download the Java Runtime to install on SUSE 10 - it asks me
whether I want 32bit or 64 bit.

Why I need to know, is...

We are wanting to install Sysaid Help Desk on our server. (www.illient.com)

I have only ever installed [anything] on Windoze. Now I get to put this

It shows record locks BUT not what file the lock is on ... I am

tell me anything about what file the lock is on, I suppose I might be
able to figure out something with the inode but still ..

Active Record Locks:

Item-ID.

(See the "-classpath" for the plugs-in that are required to run the U2

B) If you wish to "migrate" to another server or environment, update the

X:\ibm\tools\U2SOAP.config

C) Log files created (if debug mode is on):
SOAP server optional debug file:

D) Key directories with JAR files required:

Hey folks,

Just thought I'd take a second to reply back to the recent posts...

The SOAP Server included with U2WSD gets installed when you install the
tool. There isn't an option (during install) to install the SOAP Server
by itself or elsewhere. That doesn't mean you can't relocate the SOAP
Server somewhere else when you are ready to deploy. If you have no GUI
desktop (Gnome/KDE/etc.) on your Linux server, then it will be hard to
install U2WSD on that platform (and as such, gain access to the SOAP
Server). That wouldn't be an issue for Windows server users since
Windows has a GUI desktop.

At the end of the day, the SOAP Server is just a simple Jetty server
enhanced to communicated only with U2 servers enabled for it. It is
really light-weight. You don't have to fire up U2WSD to start/stop it,
but I don't believe IBM includes that tidbit of info in there
documentation.

LeRoy

That WOULD make sense, but it's not indicated in LeRoys's reply. And there
are NO instructions on how to package this all up and run it under glassfish

see if a jar/war file has been created, and if so, try to deploy it on my
glassfish server.

We've been taking baby steps with the web services developer, and have thus
far been pleased with the simplicity of development. However I'll have to
reconsider using it after reading this response. It makes absolutely no
sense to require the overhead of both a graphics desktop AND the eclipse
framework on a SERVER to run something as simple as a SOAP server.

UV 10.2 is supposed to contain a SOAP Server for creating Web Services
from existing subroutines.
We have done this in a Proof of Concept environment using the U2 Web
Services Developer running on a PC linking to a version of UV 10.2 on
Linux - which is not yet in production. Now we want to move all this
into our development environment - so want to install the SOAP Server in
the correct place.

I cannot find any reference in the documentation as to how or where to
install the SOAP Server.

Can anyone enlighten us as to how this is done and to where. We are in
the process of creating an Enterprise Service Bus using Oracle
Application Server SOA Suite. All was going very well until we
discovered this large gap in our knowledge.

It is probably very simple but we cannot find it in this new area of
functionality.

Any comments appreciated

[U2] Unidata PE and webservices

2007-11-20 Thread Dave Walker
Hi all,

Is there a way to use one of the two seats in UD PE for connection pooling?

I'm finally making some progress with the Web Service Developer and ruby,
(after a couple of weeks butting my head against a brick wall!)

I'd like to work with it at home over the upcoming holiday weekend if
there's a way to do so.

TIA,

RE: [U2] Pushing csv

2007-11-09 Thread Dave Walker
We automatically send CSV-formatted ASNs (Advance Ship Notices), but use the
following to send them as an attachment that, to the user, appears to be an
Excel spreadsheet. Some of the more informative lines would be:

027: MAIL.TO.EMAIL<1,1> =
'[EMAIL PROTECTED]'
028: MAIL.TO.NAME<1,1> = 'ASN List'
029: MAIL.SUBJECT = "ASN for ":OCONV(DATE(), "D2/")
030: MAIL.CONTENT.TYPE<1,1> = 'text/plain'

031: MAIL.HEADER.USE = 'DEFAULT-ONLY'

032: MAIL.MULTIPART = 'Y'

033:

034: * Send generated spreadsheet via email

035: MAIL.TEXT<1,1,1> = 'EDI ASN for ':OCONV(DATE(), "D2/")

036: MAIL.TEXT<1,1,1> := ". Please send any comments to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
037: MAIL.TEXT<1,2> = ''

038: MAIL.CONTENT.TYPE<1,2> = 'application/vnd.ms-excel'
039:READV HOME.PATH FROM CONTROL,'HOMEPATH',1 ELSE

040: HOME.PATH = "/export/home/ftptrans"

041:END

042: MAIL.ATTACH.FILES<1,2> = HOME.PATH:'/':SPRDSHT.NAME

We then call a generic subroutine, SEND.MIME.EMAIL, that attaches the
generated CSV file and bangs directly on the mail server to send it out.

Hope this helps. If you'd like more details, contact me off list and I'll be
happy to answer questions.

Put me in the moderated one-list camp. I have rules that shove both u2-users

occasional dead parrot reference, when the thread has devolved to the point
that it's ALL MP there's very little that can be done to revive it.

[U2] Need help with U2Web Services Developer(whimper)

2007-08-17 Thread Dave Walker
I can't get this program to connect to our development account no matter
what I try! I consistently receive the message "Could not change account to
'TRAIN' on server 'our.server.com', the account path does not exist, or you
do not have enough privileges to access the account path."

I have noticed that browsing for an account leaves double slashes at the
root of the path, like so... //ivy/train/TRAIN, but I have tried the path
both ways and neither work.

ls -al in the directory where the account lives gives this:

drwxrwxr-x 37 ivyuser primac 24576 Aug 13 10:06 TRAIN

I am logged in as ivyuser, just to try and get this thing to connect, but
still no joy. I noted in tfm under the unirpcservices entry, line 3 that
"The names of nodes allowed to execute this service. This field is
multivalued, with values separated by commas, (no spaces). If the field
contains * (asterisk), all hosts defined in /etc/hosts can execute this
service." So I had my sysadmin add my machine to the hosts file.

Still won't work.

This is waay harder than it needs to be. What am I missing?

TIA,

RE: [U2] Large-scale scanner / OCR devices and interfaces to UniV erse {Unclassified}

2007-08-09 Thread Dave Walker
We use a variety of scanners on a daily basis for both inventory and
receipts. The type of scanner you want to use really depends on the
application. For instance, we use Symbol wireless scanners for our inventory
app. The scanner actually runs a small terminal program, and the only
difference between writing a program for it versus one for a wintegrate
session is the size of the screen.

I'd offer more advice, but I'd really need to know what type of scanning you
have planned to be more helpful.

You might also want to check this link:

Does anyone have a program written that would give us better output for
LIST.READU that they wouldn't mind sharing? We're having some problems
with record locks on one of our systems and it would help a whole lot if
I could do a LIST.READU (or similar) and see the username and filename
of the record that is locked all on one line. We have an up-to-date
UNIVERSE.STAT.FILE and I was about to write my own replacement for
LIST.READU but I figured I would ask first so as to not reinvent the
wheel.

We're currently running Universe 10.2.0 on Windows 2000.

Subject: [U2] The Next Big Thing

All,
This will be posted to teh Website to make it
findable in the future, but I wanted to psot it o the list for immediate
feedback. At the IOD conference, the U2UG board promoted an idea to IBM:
given that we need to grow the community, give us what we need to help
that happen.
We offered a specific plan, which has since
been tweaked based on board feedback to IBM's feedback. Below (and soon on
the site) is the current iteration of the proposal. We need to finalize it
in a hurry, because IBM, Red Hat, and Novell have all expressed strong
interest in helping to make this happen.
   Please read and
give detailed (positive and negative) feedback ASAP.

U2
Incubator Proposal
==
The Goal: Create a single
download (also distributable as a DVD) which can be provided to colleges,
businesses, and other interested parties.
 We
want to see kids leaving college with a background in multi-value. We want
to see DB2, Oracle, MySQL, MSSQL, and MS Access Developers looking at U2
as an adjunct technology: something they can use cooperatively along side
what they already know.

The U2UG has requested that IBM make
the following official policy, both internally, and as a statement to the
distribution channel:

All companies and individuals whom are
new to U2, especially those who are coming to the environment due to the
above mentioned incubator software package, should be directed to the U2UG
for help in getting up to speed.

The U2UG is requesting
permission from IBM to build and distribute a new all-in-one installer for
UniVerse and one for UniData with the following characteristics:

1 - Everything is PE. It will include SB+ PE and other
complimentary IBM offerings.
 2 - Everything is
pre-installed (using a virtual machine image and/or the install is
drastically simplified so that one install setup up everything). The
person installing the software should be required to set no settings. It
should would as installed.
3 - The browser on the virtual
machine will be pre-bookmarked with U2UG and IBM pages needed to get a new
developer started. In a non-virtual install, the bookmarks should be
included as a single page filled with bookmarks.
 4 - The
‘knowledge pack’ as specified below is preinstalled. This pack
will also be available separately.
A. U2UG code representing
best practices.
B. All
manuals, with the pdfs renamed to match the titles, not the IBM part
#s.
C. All information
necessary for the resale of the commercial versions of the PE software
will be included. Links to updated information will also be provided.

The U2UG and others will be allowed to distribute these
all-in-one installs via the web and via DVD or other portable media.

It is time for us to stop simply selling existing
multi-value developers on the value of switching to the U2 platforms, we
need to reach out to new community members.

I don't know if this would work on U2 but as I was trying to remember this

MATREAD A FROM FILE, ID ELSE STOP
B=A
PRINT A(49), B<49>

RE: [U2] Runtime errors

2006-05-05 Thread Dave Walker
I'm not familiar with TRAP, and could not find it in (an admittedly quick
perusal of) the manuals. Is it a startup option, i.e. udt -TRAP, or a basic
option?

I've been in places in the Unidata manual I've never seen before while
researching this subject. And while the search for trapping runtime errors
has thus far been fruitless, I DID run across the system command,
udtbreakon, which seems to remove the only excuse we programmers had for
continuing to enable the break in production; "what if there's a deadly
embrace and we need to break one machine to allow the other to continue?"

Still sifting thru the manuals here. I appreciate the response!

Thanks,

Failing a proper log file, is there the equivalent of the -TRAP run
time break to debug when an error occurs? It might not be do-able in
production environment but maybe for selected users.

Fifty don't hurt. My brother-in-law did it just yesterday!

I had to buy a new shredder for all the AARP mailings, though.

RE: [U2] JDBC and OpenOffice on Linux

2005-12-01 Thread Dave Walker
I've also taken a look at OOo, albeit in the context of supporting openqm as
opposed to U2. There's lots of potential there for ANY MV database.

I even dug down to see what might be involved in getting openqm recognized
as a datasource. At that time, all the database specs were SQL oriented. But
if the OpenOffice folks have open minds (sorry, couldn't resist), we'd be
smart to jump on this opportunity.

My $.02. Headed over there to vote now.

If you've already given XML some thought, perhaps you might like to
investigate the OpenDoc format. Although I haven't done anything with it, it
doesn't appear that it would be tremendously difficult to produce an
OpenOffice spreadsheet from basic.

Jihad Yamout ( I think I 've got it spelled right) and his brother both
worked on Primac in its early days. I'm not sure who was responsible for
the cpylib system. I'll have to ask him tomorrow.

I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and change my sig. At one time, before
internationalisation and different character encodings, back when ASCII
was king, it was a neat little ASCII art hack that looked like swirls of
smoke and stars. It now seems that no one sees it as I send it, so I
guess it's time to move on.

Interesting. Especially since I have the distinct pleasure of sharing a

And while the "cpylibs" work as $INCLUDEs now, we still use cpylib from

RE: [U2] True random select lists?

2005-08-09 Thread Dave Walker
I use xmms for playing the music, but until now have used a mysql database
to generate the playlists.

What I'm actually trying to do is learn how to talk to OpenQM with qmclilib.
I've managed to create a python wrapper for the library, and have now built
the database using the same program I wrote to learn how to program python.
I've just stripped out the mysql bits and put in the OpenQM equivalent. (The
database structure has also changed, of course, to take advantage of
multivalues!)

I'll eventually put a pretty face on the frontend with PyQT, and possibly
give it multiple personalities with apache2 and mod_python.

But I have to learn to walk before I can run, and an mp3 application is the
easiest way I have to generate a fair sized database. I can populate it from
the mp3 tags themselves, and do so many fun things with it after it's built!

Thanks for the comments,

Yes, I would like a DIFFERENT 100 every time, otherwise the FIRST would have
worked. The first thing I thought of was your basic routine, but I just
wondered if I'd overlooked a SELECT option that I wasn't familiar with.

I'm wondering which would be more efficient; the basic subroutine or
Christophe's suggestion of an I descriptor?

[U2] True random select lists?

2005-08-09 Thread Dave Walker
I've posted the following to the OpenQM user's list, and thought I'd have a
crack at U2-users as well.

I've been playing with OpenQM at home for a couple of days now. Most of the
questions I've had were quickly answered by consulting the manual.

But because of the app I'm building at home, I have a question that could
just as easily pertain to D3, U2, OpenQM or any of the other various
multivalue databases.

I've built a database of all my mp3s. Now I want to generate a random list
of 100 songs. s there a way to do that with a SELECT statement, or must I
muck around in basic to do so.

I've searched c.d.p. and the U2 users mailing list. I use U2 at work, and am
familiar with "SELECT ... SAMPLE 100", but it returns the same 100 records
every time.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

RE: [U2] What is the opposite of FORM.LIST? (uv10)

2005-07-20 Thread Dave Walker
Depending on your basictype, you'd be wanting either READLIST or READSELECT.

READLIST dyn.array.var [FROM list.num] {THEN statements [END] | ELSE
statements [END]}
Synonym
READSELECT (BASICTYPE P only)

RE: [U2] THE variable names

READNEXT pops the next id from the list produced by SELECT PRODS. In order
to actually read the item, you'd need a "READ PROD.REC FROM PRODS, PROD" or
the equivalent.

RE: [U2] Universe to Web interface

2005-02-09 Thread Dave Walker
Wouldn't a php interface to U2 be nice? Then we could have LAUP instead of
LAMP. Or some such.

Python would be gravy too.

The cut and paste, drag and drop, etc. make it a great productivity

Only problem we've found is that it doesn't lock the file that you're
editing. Makes its use problematic in a multi-programmer shop.

Of course, I use vi at home, too. By choice.

We had an unexpected system crash last night, and while
running guide,
we're getting errors we haven't seen before.
elmer$ guide * -na -ns
Command line is too long, max length is 8192 current length = 8209
Can anyone shed some light on what we're doing wrong here? Our guide

Re: [U2] Printer Question

2004-06-04 Thread Dave Walker
I really appreciate all the responses; I was asking for a colleague who
didn't make the switch when the mailing list moved, and y'all certainly
kept me busy forwarding mail yesterday!

When I last touched base with him, he was working with the information
Susan provided below (which is why I'm replying here), and indicated
that it was working for him.

Once again, thanks for the replies!

Is there a way to assign TWO printers to a single print job. I.E., we want
a
report to print both on the shipping floor and in the shipping manager's
office. The only thing I could come up with was to run the report once for
each printer. Any way to generate it once and send it to both printers at
the same time?

If you are on Unidata, the Unidata commands manual indicates that you can do
it this way, if your report is being generated by a Basic program:
---Submitting
Concurrent Print Jobs
With SETPTR, you can define up to 31 logical printer units per UniData
session. You can use this functionality to submit concurrent print jobs fom
a UniBasic application. One common implementation follows:
- Define two logical printer units (for instance, 0 and 1) that point to
different physical print devices.
- Direct all lines of a report to one printer with the UniBasic PRINT ON
command (for instance, PRINT ON 0 PRINT.LINE).
- Direct summary (break) lines to the second printer (PRINT ON 0 PRINT.LINE
followed by PRINT ON 1 PRINT.LINE).
In this way, you can print a summary report and a detail report at the same
time.
---
Or, in your case, print each line to each printer, so that you don't have to
run the same job twice with 2 different destinations.

Re: [U2] Where can I find out about RPM package updates?

Im not sure about the posix version. What is it that is
missing ? I might
be able to tell you how to get what it is that you need. We
are running AS
2.1 and I am not a guru, but I can get around enough to be dangerous.

Ultimately, I'd like "who -Hu" to produce output in the following format:
NAME LINE TIME IDLE PID COMMENT
tomf pts/0May 20 14:41 . 1455 (tomf)
Essentially, the program uses the value in the PID column for each line of output, and does an inner
join with the output of "ps -ef" command. But, the version of "who" running on the
customer's AS 2.1 system omits the PID column from the output and the join process fails.
I found out sh-utils-2.0.12 package includes a POSIX version of "who" that displays the PID
column. Near as I can tell, sometime in the last couple of years sh-utils was folded into coreutils...
So, I'm trying to find out if there is an updated coreutils package (or sh-utils package) for AS 2.1 that
provides the POSIX version of "who". Hopefully, that makes sense.
I've spent a few hours Googling today and haven't found anything telling me whether or
not there is an updated version of either of these packages for AS 2.1. I have no
clue where to get answers to questions about package-version compatibility for RH
distributions. So, just knowing where I can get answers to these questions would be
helpful.
