Okay solution was easier than falling off a barstool at closing time once
someone cottoned onto what was happening. End users creating a "P" process
and filing it away.

Simply

DELETE XXPROCESS P

And screen dumping is back to it's former glory :)

G thanks for taking the time to work out how to change the setting, have that
filed away.

Cheers,
Jeff

 Jeff,

What I did was while exiting from the session, there is a small SB+ dialog
box that appears with 3 options, Close,New Session and Re-connect. Above
those buttons, there is a check box which asks - "Save session?" I clicked
that, and exited. When I logged back in, I found the check against Use
Windows Print Drivers option chosen(whatever change I made).

Can you please try and see if that works.

G,

Advice at this stage would be not to replicate as there appears to be a bug
in SBClient, i.e. once you get the issue happening there's no way to reverse
it that I know of.

1. Double click an SB+ item to bring up the oonnect screen, the one with the
telephone, computers, satelite et al images.

2. From the top window menu select "File".

3. From the drop down menu select "Print Options".

4. Tick "Use Windows Print Drivers"

5. Click the "OK" button.

Note even after leaving and returning to the "Print Options" window the "Use
Windows Print Drivers" appears unclicked, that's a bug.

6. Connect to an SB+ session, selecting GUI mode.

7. Once in SB+ select a menu to go one down from the first menu you see.

8. You should now be seeing an icon bar below the top drop down menu, think
this may have to be setup.

9. Click on the printer icon to do a page dump and it no longer goes direct
to the printer.

We have managed to reproduce on three machines but no one can work out how to
fix it. Thinking if we canned the whole SB+ thing and went with a web
interface this would be a whole bunch easier in the long run. Of course the
goal here, according to management, is to migrate to Oracle so that's
probably a moot point :(

Cheers,
Jeff

RE: [U2] RE: Another probably simple SB+ issue.

2009-05-05 Thread Jeff Ritchie
David,

Works in text mode and from word etc.

Interestingly enough managed to duplicate the problem. Before clicking the
connect in a SBClient session there's a File option at the top of the window.
Selecting that then selecting "Print Options" gets a small window up with a
tick box labeled "Use Windows Print Drivers". If you click that then carry on
into your session the same issue occurs. Now the real cool part is after
logging off and going back to the "Print Options" window the "Use Windows
Print Drivers" is no longer ticked but the issue occurs if you log back onto
the system.

Thinking this has to be some sort of bug in SBClient. Unfort we have zero
support over here, don't even get me started on the Aussie VAR situation, so
am unable to call in the cavalry at this stage.

Maybe if I stuffed up all the PCs I could claim it always worked that way :)

Cheers,
Jeff

[U2] Another probably simple SB+ issue.

2009-05-05 Thread Jeff Ritchie
In SB+ GUI mode theres an Icon bar toward the top of the window with a
printer graphic on it. When you click the printer icon it should print a
screen shoot to your nominated window. If I do this in text mode no issues,
working like a brought one, yay the IBM manual is correct. If I do it via the
gui it first pops up the output location Box (Printer, Screen, Aux, Excel,
etc) and then for no apparent reason throws up a SB+ file selection box
!!!

Clearly I've gotten off the beaten track in GUI mode, anyone else run across
this and worked out how to fix it? Works on nine computers no issue but the
tenth one is causing me to pull my hair out in frustration. There seems to be
nothing different in the setup, i.e. I haven't found the issue yet :-(

Jeff

Gidday Jeff,

Reasonably certain you can also specify output to file.

Output To Screen/Printer/File (S/P/F) ?
Enter option: S creen, P rinter or F ile (xxUSERTEXT $FILEport.page).
(F3)

Convert xxUSERTEXT to a dir type file (aka UV type 19) and you should be
able to pick up the parts using ftp, samba, nfs etc

To those that know me on this group. I have been using the Unidata databases
since 1998 when introduced to it by my former CIO. Over the years and
throughout my IT career, it has served me well. Decreasing software
production and maintenance costs, while at the same time increasing the
value of the software I (we) developed to solve complex business solutions.

I have accepted an Application Development management position with a
company here in the Philadelphia area. However, they are not a U2 shop. I
view this opportunity as a chance to build my skills in and around the .NET
platform and evaluate the use MSSQL in a true business application that I
myself have built on a U2 platform in a previous time.

While this doesn't exclusively rule out U2 in the future, for now, I'll be
in SQL-land.

My posting did have a little RD&C and a smiley but since you'd like to

I make my recommendations based on my sense of good business, not idle

With the thousands of postings to this forum George, it's tough to remember

same question a few times with no suitable answer, and waiting for some
other solution to come by. In that same time I've seen others in your
position develop and deploy their solutions using the tools that are
available. The song says "if you can't be with the one you love, honey,
love the one you're with". In the business world when we don't move fast
enough we lose opportunities, so similarly, it's often best to use the tools
that are available now rather than waiting for something else. I don't know
what your priorities are, but when I see you've gone so long without a
solution I figured it was time for a reminder so that you could re-weigh
those options for yourself.

FWIW, you don't "need" third-party tools to connect into your MV
environments. The tools are created and sold to fill a void where
developers don't "want" to develop their own. There's nothing more magical
or high quality about provided tools than DIY solutions, except that you
don't have to maintain them yourself. The other side of that coin is that
you _can't_ maintain these other tools on your own, so you may be better off
writing your own tools, which may cost much less in the long run than
buying, even if you need to contract someone to write the tools for you.

I think the reason you're waiting for UO.NET is that you've found the other
connectivity libraries to be inadequate, but you're hoping that someone will
still provide a free or low-cost alternative. Many people here hate those
libs and others love them, to each his/her own. But if IBM can't get the
existing libraries to work for you now, then it's unlikely they're going to
come up with something new that will change that in the near time-frame.
Sure we can hope and trust, but it's going to take IBM time to develop,
beta, and deploy a new library, and then there is the initial bleeding edge
v1.0 honeymoon/pain that developers have to tolerate, so you aren't looking
at a real solution for quite some time yet.

With all this in mind I thought you might be more inclined to try a proven
solution that's available immediately, rather than waiting for ... whatever.

Good Luck.

If the Pick model provided the same "uniform" level of security that standard
relational databases do then the rest of the world might look at it differently.

Sorry to disagree with this point, but join any number of online communities and ask
how to extract usernames and passwords from MySQL, Oracle, MS SQL, MS Access etc etc
and some one will drop some code on you. This is not a valid arguement imho. No db
system is 100% secure against those wanting to crack into it.

Just my adjusted $0.01c worth to the debate, (that would be $0.00725 US cents :) ).

is).

Actually had no email over night or this morning from the list, but have been getting
a pretty regular flow beforehand.

I do believe Dawn has banned all IP addys coming out of Newcastle though.

And this month's Larry Ellison claim is ? Well it will be coming in the next
version, or the one after that, or at least some one has an email about it. If they

Stiletos? Pink shoes? i can definitely see what these two have in common
with a database:)
I've heard that PICK programmers are too arrogant to recognize a
threat...maybe that is why their database is losing to Oracle?:) Of course
now I will be labelled a heretic by the 12th century Catholic Church of
database programmers, but really, look at those who designed the pick
systems.

To last at anything, you have to be realistic about your threats and
weaknesses. Look at a legacy Oracle system with required database standards
built in and compare it to a PICK db with no standards and 20 years of
maintenance.
At the PICK convention in Vegas this year, maybe 500 people showed up. I
heard 5 years ago there more like 5,000. Sound like a fad anyone?
Maybe IBM can fix it.

Funny thing

Our son's hamster died this am...(he doesn't know yet)
First my wife calls hysterical, "The hamster is Dead!"
then I get an email titled "My sincere condolences"
I'm thinking, now, how the heck did the U2 list find out
   about the hamster

Guess we will be hamster shopping tonight...(no, were not
gonna try the old switch and hope he doesn't realize it's
  not the same one).

Oh well...

George
