RE: [U2] [UV] I descriptor help

2007-10-02 Thread Karen Bessel
Jim,

If that's the only attribute you're sending, you can define it like
this: SUBR('ZGET.PCODE,@RECORD<25>) where attribute 25 is the PartNo
field. You don't need to include the @MV in the subroutine argument list
because the subroutine will understand @MV.

There is no parsing necessary for an i-descriptor to process the
multi-valued field. Just make sure that attribute 6 of the dictionary
item is 'M'.

I hope this helps.

Karen

I need to call a basic subroutine to process a field. The field in the
record is a multivalued field. How do I pass that field to the called
subroutine ?

The field is PARTNO which is defined as a MV field. I want to call a
subroutine such as SUBR('ZGET.PCODE',@RECORD,@MV). I have them
associated in
the same PH record.

You have to be kidding!

Consider a simple menu option processor...

INPUT OPTION
IF OPTION MATCHES '1N' THEN
ON OPTION GOSUB OPTION1, ;* helpful comment
   OPTION2, ;* blah bah
   OPTION3, ;* blah blah
   ERROR
END

compared with

INPUT OPTION
BEGIN CASE
   CASE OPTION = 1
  GOSUB OPTION1 ;* helpful comment
   CASE OPTION = 2
  GOSUB OPTION2 ;* blah blah
   CASE OPTION = 3
  GOSUB OPTION3 ;* blah blah
   CASE 1
  GOSUB ERROR
END CASE

Personally, I find the first one much neater and simpler. It gets more
so as
the list of options grows. It will also be faster to execute, not that
this
is likely to be much of a problem.

Let's not turn this into yet another debate about coding style but just
accept that we each have our own preferences.

RE: [U2] [u2] : Cleaner Case Statement

2007-07-25 Thread Karen Bessel
The 2nd set of syntax is the only one that will work if you want to do
the GOSUB when ANS equals either "B" or "2".

I don't agree that it's hard to read, but I don't like having multiple
statements on one line, separated by semicolons, I prefer to have the
case and the gosub on separate lines, but that's a matter of personal
preference.

How can this structure be cleaned-up?

  begin case

case Ans = 'A' ; gosub Check.A

case Ans = 'B' ; gosub Check.B

case Ans = '2' ; gosub Check.B

  end case

The following is more difficult to read.

  begin case

case Ans = 'A' ; gosub Check.A

case Ans = 'B' or Ans = '2' ; gosub Check.B

  end case

I would like something like...

  begin case

case Ans = 'A' ; gosub Check.A

case Ans = 'B'

case Ans = '2' ; gosub Check.B

  end case

so that the "gosub Check.B" command is not repeated. I have tried a few

alternatives without a victory.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

Hmmm, I don't think that's the case here, but thanks for your reply.

I had several phantom threads running concurrently - all were running

and I don't think that the program was generating printed output.

Normally, with a spooler entry# (even with a phantom), I'll see:

Use the write ON ERROR clause to display info about the error using
STATUS, FILEINFO, etc.

Any time that I've ever encountered an abort in a BASIC program due to a
write error, it's given me the source code line #. I can then look at
the source code to see what file was being written to and start my

When a BASIC program in either U2 flavor attempts a write to a file that
cannot be written to the program bombs completely out to TCL and no
information is given about the file, nor about the specifics (is it the
owner, the group, the RWX permissions?).

There are system commands in both flavors that can be used to query a
file's
write-ability before attempting the WRITE. Before I go try to find
every
write in the system and put that check into place, I'm wondering why
can't
the write itself do this? Ideally not bomb out of the program, but even
if
that is hard to correct, reporting the NAME OF THE FILE that couldn't be
written to would save many hours of system scouring!

STATUS, FILEINFO, etc.

Any time that I've ever encountered an abort in a BASIC program due to a
write error, it's given me the source code line #. I can then look at
the source code to see what file was being written to and start my
investigation there.

RE: [U2] Users of UniVerse

2007-04-30 Thread Karen Bessel
I'm not sure why Ferguson is moving. It may be the fact that they are a
child company of Wolesley (a UK based building supply giant) and a
sister company of Stock Building Supply in Raleigh NC (they run
Progress-based Trend) so I think it's a "consistency" issue. I worked at
FEI for two years after relocating to VA from CT, caught the scent of
danger when the wind was blowing in the right direction, and got out
last fall. It's a good thing I did too, because Ferguson's U2 developers
are catching the boot left & right.

The NWNA U2 application is a route management system built solely for
the home/office bottled water delivery business - it has idiosyncrasies
that are very different than the Nestle global initiative. I'm not sure
SAP is going to be a good fit for that particular application.

Nestle has a global strategy no U2 developer has designed software to
handle
- I see logic for that move.
Hughes got bought by Home Depot, so they go whereever they are taken -
that
change was inevitable whether a good move or not.
But why would Ferguson be moving? Was the issue the application or the
database?

Nestle Waters is in the process of converting to an SAP solution, as
part of the worldwide Nestle initiative known as Globe.

Also SAP-bound are: Hughes Supply/Home Depot Supply of Orlando and
Ferguson Enterprises of Newport News, VA.

All three of these companies have spent millions of dollars (MILLIONS)
on customizing their in-house U2 software - and those systems are now
destined for the scrap heap.

So, those companies would probably *not* be good references for a "stick
with U2" campaign.

[U2] VLIST Help

2006-10-30 Thread Karen Bessel
UV Version 10.1 (Pick)

I'm looking at a process in PORT.STATUS that shows a program with an
object code address in the command section that looks something like
this:

[program_name 0x8FAA]

A VLIST of that program does not include that object code address. We do
not use system-level catalogs so I am sure that I am VLISTing the
correct program file.

I've tried copying the program to another name and recompiling and doing
a VLIST of that object code - still can't find it. Then I tried merging
in all of the INCLUDEd code and deleting the INCLUDE lines and
recompiling, then doing a VLIST of THAT object code - still can't find
it.

Any suggestions? Hep!

There is a SYSTEM() cell that will tell you. Do a HELP BASIC SYSTEM()
and
look for flavor and the write a Basic program to CRT SYSTEM(X).

I have never heard of this happening. I would use UniAdmin to delete
the
account and recreate it. Check that the flavor and account path are
correct.
I am on M$ platform but it should work the same on *nix.

RE: [U2] Query calculating 120 days.

2006-10-25 Thread Karen Bessel
First of all, you need to determine what date range you're looking for.
In other words what's the first date (120 days ago).

SELECT FILE WITH DATE GE "that_date".

It will select everything in the file that falls after that date.

months.
The query will be run daily only to capture the lastest information.

I having trouble getting the second to work.
