RE: [U2] RedHat, Universe, unlocking

2006-03-09 Thread Sirulnick, Steve
John,

I tried sudo for uv/bin/list_readu does not work as there are other things
UV and linux must have permissions to use the UniVerse Administrator and
utilities. You still must be root to be able to perform UniVerse
administration.

sudo bin/uv seems to be the quickest way to allow a user to be an admin.
Granted, there are security flaws with this (hopefully you're not going to
give root privileges to just anyone), but it's a lot cleaner than mucking
with the UID's and I mentioned before.

Steve

PS if sudo bin/list_readu works for you, then I would like to see how you
did it.

No, I meant configuring sudo to be able to invoke list_readu (which is
what unlock calls)

Because in order to be uvadm on *nix based systems, you must be root. In

John,

You can. In order for it to work though, you have to invoke a universe shell
for it to work. For example, you could telnet or ssh into your account and
type sudo /path/to/bin/uv, enter your password... or however you set up sudo
and you're now logged in as root. That completely avoids having to create
more than one user with UID 0.

RE: [U2] RedHat, Universe, unlocking

2006-03-08 Thread Sirulnick, Steve
Sure, but be EXTREMELY careful as you could REALLY screw things up.

You must be signed on as root to do this and have a terminal session open.

1. Type in vipw. This utility will open up the password file without
inappropriately locking it. You should see lines that look like:

someuser:x:10236:501::/ibm/data/account:/bin/bash

2. Scroll to the user account. Select "i" (for insert) to begin
editing. Replace the line in the third position where each position is
terminated by a ":" with a "0" In this case, the third position is "10236".
3. After you have completed this, hit and enter ":","w","q".
This should write the file and quit the first part of the program. NOTE:
when you type ":","w","q" you will see those characters at the bottom of
your screen only. Not within the body of the file you're trying to edit!!!
4. You should then be prompted to edit the shadow file. Would you like
to edit /etc/shadow now [y/n]? Answer "y" This will take you to the shadow
file.
5. It's not necessary to edit anything here, so just enter ":wq". This
should take you out of the program.
6. BIG FAT NOTE: If at any time you think you've errored editing, type
,"q","!" This will escape the file without saving.
7. If you run into any problems, type man vipw from the terminal.

If you're unsure about this, don't attempt it on your production box. Try it
on a test system.

[U2] Universe Server vs Enterprise Editions

2006-03-07 Thread Sirulnick, Steve
I was thinking about moving from UV Server to UV Enterprise in order to take
advantage of device licensing. Has anyone ever done this? We have roughly
100 concurrent users at any given time, but they generally have more than 2
sessions opened (definitely needed here). Since UV Server doesn't take
advantage of device licensing, my license bills are going through the roof!

If there's any flaw in my logic, please let me know. :-)

This is some good information for me. Thank you for your reply. I, however,
did a "sync" on the device and everything fell in line. I was using rm to
delete files, but no one was in them.

One thing that I did notice that may be odd is when I run a df -k I see

/dev/lv0253379072 11705044 79% 102001 7%

Where "102001" is the Iused and 7% is the %iused. If I've been deleting
files, should that number (and possibly percentage) also increase?

Does your free space always decrease that quickly?

It sounds like you're deleting the files (with "rm"?) and the reason that
you're not getting the space back is that the files are in use by another
process .. Try the "df -d" command to see if there's deleted files pending
.. If you log them off, you'll get the space back .. So if the "person"
that's got the files opened is a phantom or daemon, you'd have to stop that
process as well ..

Before you do deletes, you should run the "fuser -f filename" (or "fuser -c
/filesystem") command to see if someone's using the file ..

If files AREN'T in use, you should get the space back immediately .. If
they're not in use, you'd be safe to resize them on the fly (if the resize
is quick) ..

If you're on UDT, i've got a script that I use that uses fuser and then
figures out what UDT users are involved using "listuser" ..

fine. The problem is that when you migrate the file, it actually get
created anew and the header information is lost from you original system.

You didn't say which U2 product, which makes all the difference in the
world for this answer. So, because I know a bit of this on Universe, I'll
target my answer at that DBMS.

My experience with distributed file transfers is that FTP is fine.
HOWEVER, when the file is on the new system, you must run fnuxi on the
file before doing anything else. Fnuxi clears the distributed parts out of
the file header, thus making it a standard hashed file again. So, the main
file has to be removed and then the file re-distributed. The Partfile
algorithm is hard-coded in each file's header as is the absolute path to
each partfile.

[U2] System Migration issues

2006-01-12 Thread Sirulnick, Steve
I am migrating an old AIX server running U2 to RH Linux. Because of the
server's limitations, I need to transfer files between the two devices via
FTP and then converting the files for Linux use. After doing so, my
distributed files are getting corrupted. It looks like the IBM provided
fixtool utility repairs the files, but it's taking way too long for my
larger distributed files. Making a HUGE assumption that it's the file
transfer responsible for the file corruption, is there a preferred method
for copying data files?
