RE: Migrating U2 data

2004-02-06 Thread uniVerse mailing list
we have spent the last 10 days trying to get this to work ALL THE TIME.
we used to cpio the account up, ftp it across and then cpio it out
again. However we were finding that files were not being included in the
cpio output. We know from experience that tar doesn't work on the input
side of things. so the other alternative is to use uvbackup. However on
an aix system there is a limit of 2gb file sizes so it makes multiple
files. Not only that but it takes FOREVER to do the backup - on a aix
box it took about 7 hours to backup 4.5gb of data, yet uvrestore takes
20 minutes to restore it on the w2k server.
However we were originally using uvadmin to do the restore but this has
no functionality to deal with multiple files. Therefore you need the
command line version to do it.
We are still getting intermittent errors with some files not being
restored. There is a known issue with type1 files not working when you
restore it - they should be resized to type 19 before uvbackup is done.
However, we are also having problems where a "find . -print" to get the
list of files to backup causes a failure in the restore. However if we
do a "find ./ACCOUNT -print" from the parent directory of the account,
the files restore ok.

We're still working on getting a reliable routine together. However in
the past we've successfully just cpio'd the data, ftp'd across (in
binary) and then "uncpio'd" it back out again. However recent events in
the past month or two, on uv10, w2k servers have caused us these
problems.

hth,

Andy

Re: Migrating U2 data

2004-02-05 Thread Ray Daignault
Since both machines are INTEL, there is no real conversion of the data files
needed EXCEPT

1) File names must be NT compatible. Don't try to transfer a file call
"CYNDI*CALVIN" from the SCO system to NT. The "*" is a wildcard and you
won't be able to open it properly.
2) Dynamic files cannot be migrated easily due to the directory structure
and the "hidden" files inside. Many copy programs ignore them
(.Type30)since the flag files are "0" length.
3) Program files are more likely to have reserved characters. Also there
could be problems with Long filenames and wrapping of names at 14
characters. I would T-DUMP the data from program files and T-LOAD them on
the XP system. Then re-compile (which also ensures you have all the source
code before de-commissioning your system)
4) Indexes. If you setup indexes on your SCO system, you will need to use
the SET.INDEX command for Each data file. I would suggest rebuilding all
indexes.

Our hardware for the old SCO running UniVerse 7 is Altos 600 Acer -- Intel

The new XP system to run UniVerse 10.1 is Intel Celeron.

Sorry for shouting here, but I noticed the OP said he was currently
running UV/SCO, and wanted to switch to UV/NT.

So, with the very important caveat that "can UV 10 cope with UV 7 data?",
all he needs do is an os-level copy of the data file from one system to the
other. It REALLY IS that simple. I'm running UV9/NT, UV9/SCO, and
UV10/linux. *ALL* the data files are binary compatible across all three

Cyndi,

If your talking about converting Unidata (Unix) to Universe (W2k) then read on.

We converted from Unidata on an HP Unix box to W2K running UV 10. It wasn't that
difficult to do. Get a hold of IBMs Universe Technical Bulletin (Part # 74-0108)
"Converting Unidata Files to Universe Files". I created a Unix script to ftp all the

I have
to agree here.  We did the same identical conversion back several years ago
from UV 7 on SCO, to the second UV release available on NT (don't remember the
exact version number).

All we
did was TAR the SCO database, copy it through the network, and then UNTAR it on
the NT side.  Everything worked great.  Kept correct path names and
everything.  The only major problems we had were things that were written
to use Unix commands or Unix subsystem.

My 2

Re: Migrating U2 data

2004-02-04 Thread Trevor Ockenden

Dear Cyndi

My suggestion is to write two routines. One is to
export the data to two flat files (one to contain data the other to contain a
list of files with associated item and byte counts) the other routine to read
one of the flat files to determine the files to create and their correct sizes
and or type the process the other flat file by writing the data, item by item
into the appropriate file(s).

This we have done many times and works regardless
of the source and destination system you are involved with. It also has the
added advantages of allowing you to automatically check the import has worked
OK, that you can filter out unwanted characters or pieces of data such as object
code from dictionaries or CHAR(0)s as is often found in some old systems PLUS
when it comes time to do the final cutover you can modify the original SELECT
list so you only need to bring across that which has changed and is required.
All you set up and modifications needed to get the software to work on the
destination machine need not be done again as you are simply loading the data
into files.

Cheers

Unidata is a different database (BTW Doug you
can move from Unidata to Universe).  Make sure you media is compatible
between the systems.  So you move one tape taking a backup using
uvbackup and then restore using uvrestore on the windows box.  If you
would like some help, we do this for a living, contact me off-line or see

Re: Migrating U2 data

2004-02-04 Thread Cyndi Calvin

So if we are running UniVerse (and UniData is a
different DB system) I would not use the document someone
referenced
http://publibfi.boulder.ibm.com/epubs/pdf/9155.pdf  because this is for UniData

Here is what I was told to use to determine what we
are running on old SCO.  This is UniVerse?
>.L RELLEVEL

 RELLEVEL001 X002
7.3.1.1003 PICK004 PICK.FORMAT

As for uvbackup and uvrestore -- they were
not implemented in UniVerse 7.3.1.1 distribution.

Any other ideas for migrating UniVerse UNIX 7.3.1.1
to Windows 10.0?

Unidata is a different database (BTW Doug you can
move from Unidata to Universe).  Make sure you media is compatible
between the systems.  So you move one tape taking a backup using uvbackup
and then restore using uvrestore on the windows box.  If you would like
some help, we do this for a living, contact me off-line or see our web site
  www.u2logic.com.

Well, Universe is the RDMS (no?).  I just
need the data (Unidata, yes?)
We have an very old 7.3.1.1 version of UniVerse running on
SCO 3.2.
We want to move it to a new Windows XP or 2000
client.

I have the UniVerse 10.0 to install on
Windows.

Someone also mentioned using uvbackup and
uvrestore.
I'm looking at http://publibfi.boulder.ibm.com/epubs/pdf/9155.pdf
page 31.

Any pointers on what document explains how

system?

Thanks.

No crawling required.
I don't understand 10% of this U2
stuff.
I actually thought you might correct what I wrote
about UniData vs. UniVerse.
Your questions seemed leqit to me ;-)

Re: Migrating U2 data

2004-02-04 Thread Doug Miller

IBM actually has documentation on this.
http://publibfi.boulder.ibm.com/epubs/pdf/9155.pdf
It's in the first chapter.  You just need to copy the data files
through the network and use the convdata & convcode tools.  I
would recommend a complete rebuild of indexes as opposed to using
convidx.
The main issues you will find is things that were coded to interact with
the OS.
