[UAI] CfP: C4BD2014 - Workshop on Complexity for Big Data at IEEE BigData 2014
CALL FOR PAPERS C4BD2014 Workshop on COMPLEXITY FOR BIG DATA Workshop at IEEE BigData 2014, Washington, D.C., U.S.A. 27th, 28th, 29th, or 30th of October 2014 (to be determined) http://www.pascal-hitzler.de/C4BD2014/ [extended paper deadline:September 14, 2014] Complexity will lead to both big challenges and opportunities in big data research. Complexity in big data can be caused by many factors, including: * large number of features, which are related to each other through a rich variety of relationships ranging from simple to complicated; * a large number of heterogeneous dimensions, which offer a variety of kinds of insights and require different treatments, in addition to a large number of data records; * a large variety of heterogeneous types, such as vectors, sequences, (labeled) graphs, images, and multimedia, in addition to a large number of instances; * a rich set of logical, semantic, and ontological relationships. Complexity has often been used to successfully characterize various kinds of complicated subjects, for example in computational complexity, descriptive complexity, Kolmogorov complexity. Since big data have many complicated parts with intricate relationships to each other, the study of complexity for big data has potential to be highly successful. Research on complexity of big data needs to consider the following facts, among others: * Big data can be used for different purposes such as data integration, cross domain fertilization, and data mining; * Structures among various parts of big data can be explicit or hidden, and can be described using a rich variety of patterns and models. The Complexity for Big Data workshop is intended to create an atmosphere of exchange of ideas, providing a forum for the presentation and discussion of the key topics related to Big Data Complexity, including (but not limited to): * new concepts for complexity for Big Data * new techniques for handling complexity for Big Data * analysis of complex relationships * type logic acquisition * scalability of type logic reasoning * dealing with semantic heterogeneity * dimensionality-reduction techniques * query and search over multiple data silos * capture and use of provenance information * analysis of similarity and differences among heterogeneous parts SUBMISSION Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit original papers that have not been submitted for review or published elsewhere. Submitted papers must be written in English and should not exceed 9 pages (IEEE BigData Conference foramt) in the case of research and experience papers, or 5 pages in the case of position papers (including figures, bibliography and appendices). All submitted papers will be judged based on their relevance, originality, significance, technical quality and organisation. Papers must be submitted through easychair at https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=c4bd. PRESENTATION Selected papers will be presented during the workshop. The workshop will include extra time for discussion of the presentation allowing the group to have a better understanding of the issues, challenges, and ideas being presented. [UAI] CfP:Linked Dataset descriptions. Special call of the Semantic Web journal
Special Call of the Semantic Web journal for LINKED DATASET DESCRIPTIONS Linked Data is a key enabler for the Semantic Web vision and one of the steps towards a truly "Semantic Web". The Semantic Web journal calls for brief papers (usually about 5-8 pages) containing a concise description of a Linked Dataset. The paper shall describe in concise and clear terms key characteristics of the dataset as a guide to its usage for various (possibly unforeseen) purposes. In particular, such a paper shall typically give information, amongst others, on the following aspects of the dataset (if applicable). Name, URL, versioning, licensing, availability Topic coverage, source for the data Purpose of the Linked Dataset, e.g. demonstrated by relevant queries or inferences over it Applications using the dataset and other metrics of use Creation, maintenance and update mechanisms as well as policies to ensure sustainability and stability Quality, quantity and purpose of links to other datasets Domain modeling and use of established vocabularies Examples and critical discussion of typical knowledge modeling patterns used Known shortcomings of the dataset A discussion of the dataset in the context of the Five Stars of Linked Data Vocabulary Use, <http://www.semantic-web-journal.net/content/five-stars-linked-data-vocabulary-use> Papers will be evaluated along the following dimensions: quality of the dataset, usefulness (or potential usefulness) of the dataset, as well as clarity and completeness of the descriptions. Papers should usually be written by people involved in the generation or maintenance of the dataset, or with the consent of these people. Prospective authors must take notice of the submission guidelines posted at http://www.semantic-web-journal.net/authors. Past dataset descriptions which were already accepted for publication are available for perusal at <http://www.semantic-web-journal.net/accepted-datasets>; see also the editorial of the first SWJ special issue with linked dataset descriptions, available at <http://www.semantic-web-journal.net/content/linked-data-big-data-and-4th-paradigm>. Authors should note, though, that requirements and expectations have somewhat evolved since previous calls. Deadlines: Paper submission: September 30, 2014. Extensions can be granted upon request. Notification: usually within 8 weeks of submission In case of questions, please contact the Editors-in-chief: Pascal Hitzler Krzysztof Janowicz cont...@semantic-web-journal.net -- Prof. Dr. Pascal Hitzler Dept. of Computer Science, Wright State University, Dayton, OH pas...@pascal-hitzler.de http://www.knoesis.org/pascal/ Semantic Web Textbook: http://www.semantic-web-book.org Semantic Web Journal: http://www.semantic-web-journal.net ___ uai mailing list uai@ENGR.ORST.EDU https://secure.engr.oregonstate.edu/mailman/listinfo/uai

[UAI] CfP: Ontology Design Patterns descriptions. Special call of the Semantic Web journal
Special Call of the Semantic Web journal for ONTOLOGY DESIGN PATTERN DESCRIPTIONS http://www.semantic-web-journal.net/blog/special-call-ontology-design-pattern-descriptions An ontology design pattern is a reusable solution to a recurring ontology modeling problem. Different kinds of ontology design patterns have been identified, and they are used for different purposes ranging from their use as building blocks and strategies for ontology creation to their utilization for heterogneity preservation in information integration. The Semantic Web journal calls for papers containing concise descriptions of an Ontology Design Pattern. Papers are typically expected to include discussions of at least the following aspects. * A general introduction concerning the rationale of making the pattern. * A graphical depiction of the pattern accompanied by an explanation, in intuitive terms, of the design choices made. * A detailed axiomatization, e.g. using OWL, for the relationships between the vocabulary terms used in the patterns. * A detailed discussion of related patterns or ontology modeling practices and their relationships with the presented pattern. * A convincing discussion of use cases. * Examples for existing datasets which can be used with the pattern. Papers will be evaluated along the following dimensions: Quality of the pattern, usefulness (or potential usefulness) of the pattern, clarity and completeness of the descriptions. Prospective authors must take notice of the submission guidelines posted at http://www.semantic-web-journal.net/authors Deadlines: Paper submission: June 15, 2014 Notification: Usually within 8 weeks of submission Members of the Guest Editorial Board will be invited as papers are submitted. [UAI] Semantic Web Journal: Call for Special Issue Proposals
Semantic Web Journal: Call for Special Issue Proposals http://www.semantic-web-journal.net Semantic Web research is interdisciplinary in nature. Indeed, progress towards the Semantic Web vision requires the incorporation of fundamental state-of-the-art and future developments from many domains including Computer & Information Science, Cognitive Science, Geographic Information Science, the life sciences, the social sciences, and many more. To establish bridges between these domains, it is thus important to demonstrate what and how they contribute to the Semantic Web vision, and what the Semantic Web can offer in return to these disciplines. Hence, the Semantic Web Journal calls for Special Issue proposals on topics which (a) are within the topical realm of a neighboring domain but (b) contribute directly or indirectly to Semantic Web research. Research published in such special issues should strengthen the in-depth information exchange between disciplines by providing novel and high-quality contributions and at the same time demonstrate the impact on foundational research questions relevant for Semantic Web. While such manuscripts can be written with a specific audience in mind, the key ideas and contributions should be accessible to the broader Semantic web community. Proposals for special issues shall be sent to the Editors-in-Chief (cont...@semantic-web-journal.net) and contain the following information in a single PDF file: * Names and affiliations of all guest editors * Topic of the special issue * Tentative list of Guest Editorial Board members * A short description of the topic * Why the topic is currently of interest * Why the topic is relevant to this call * Credentials of the guest editors regarding their research impact and their community standing with respect to the topic * A draft call for papers, including a suggested time-line It will be assumed that all proposed guest editors are aware of the journal's open and transparent review policy described at http://www.semantic-web-journal.net/reviewers#review Proposals for more "traditional" special issues are certainly also welcome at any time.
