KR Doctoral Consortium Call for Applications

November 5, 2021

Virtual (Originally: Hanoi, Vietnam)

https://kr2021.kbsg.rwth-aachen.de

The 18th International Conference on Principles of Knowledge
Representation and Reasoning (KR 2021) invites PhD students to apply
for the Doctoral Consortium program.

1) AIMS AND SCOPE

The Doctoral Consortium (DC) is a student mentoring program bringing
together PhD students and senior researchers from the area of KR. The
aims of the consortium are:

* to provide a forum for students to present their current research,
   and receive feedback from other students and senior researchers;
* to promote contacts among PhD students working in similar areas;
* to support students with information and advice on academic,
   research, and industrial careers.

The DC is intended for PhD students who have a specific research
proposal and some preliminary results, but who have sufficient time
prior to completing their dissertation to benefit from the consortium
experience. Preference will be given to students satisfying these
criteria, but we also encourage students to apply who are at an earlier
or more advanced stage of the completion of their thesis.

Accepted students will participate in several dedicated DC events,
which are planned to include a lightning talk session, a poster
session, a mentoring event, and a DC invited talk. Details will be
announced in due time. Each student will be given ample time to
present their work and therefore be able to fully benefit from
direct feedback from the assigned senior researcher mentor and the
wider KR conference audience.

Note that due to the ongoing global Covid-19 pandemic, KR 2021 and all
of the DC events will take place online.

2) APPLICATION SUBMISSION

Applications must be submitted through the EasyChair conference system
(a link will be provided later). Each application must contain the
following elements combined into a single PDF document:

(1) Thesis summary. A description of the problem being addressed, your
motivation for addressing the problem, proposed plan of research,
the progress to date (what you have already achieved and what
remains to be done), and related work. It must be four pages
maximum and use the same style as for KR paper submissions.

(2) Curriculum Vitae. A description of your background and relevant
experience (research, education, employment), of two pages
 maximum.

(3) Letter of recommendation. A letter from your thesis advisor that
states that he/she supports your participation in the DC.

(4) Optionally, a suggestion of up to 5 potential mentors with similar
research interests, who could give good advice on technical
aspects related to the work, and/or career opportunities.

The selection process will consider the quality of the submitted
proposal and the stage of the student's PhD project.

Doctoral students who submit to the DC are permitted to have
previously published their research, and are encouraged to submit
papers to workshops associated to KR 2021.

3) IMPORTANT DATES

Application deadline: July 23, 2021

Acceptance notification: July 30, 2021

Doctoral Consortium: November 5, 2021 (main part)
November 8, 2021 (lightning talks at main conference)

[UAI] Call for applications: Neuromatch Summer Academy Students, TAs and Mentors

2020-04-23 Thread alish dipani
The pandemic has shut down nearly every summer program in the world at
which students, postdocs and faculty would normally gather to acquire
crucial skills and build networks. We’re building a program to replace
this loss. Our plan is to have a 3-week online course July 13-31 focused
on computational analysis and simulation of neural data with intensive
mentoring by knowledgeable TAs and faculty mentors to help with projects.
Tuition will be relatively minimal (~ 100-200 USD) and also voluntary. TAs
will be paid a stipend for their time because it will be intensive.
Mentorship by faculty will be substantially less work.

Interested in signing up as a potential participant, a TA, or a faculty
mentor? Fill out one of the three forms below. Also, please feel free to
send this out as widely as possible. We’re trying to cast a global net,
especially to people outside of the US and Europe. Tutorials will take
place in parallel tracks in different time zones and in multiple languages
when possible.

Note that the deadline for applications is April 27.

Call for Applications for Participation

RoboCup 2018 Standard Platform League

  spl.robocup.org

Saturday 16th June through Friday 22nd June 2018 (Montréal, Canada)

  http://www.robocup2018.com

RoboCup is an international initiative that fosters
research and education in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence through a
variety of competitions (RoboCupSoccer, RoboCupRescue, RoboCup@Home,
RoboCupJunior) involving mostly multi-robot systems. RoboCup currently includes
a number of different robot soccer leagues that focus on different research
challenges.

The Standard Platform League (SPL) is characterized using an identical robot
platform by all the teams. Participating researchers focus on algorithmic
development for fully autonomous robots, i.e., robots that operate with no
external control. The SPL at RoboCup 2018 will use V5 (Maybe also V6, but
currently no final decision has been made) or older versions of the NAO
humanoid robot manufactured by
SoftBank Robotics. The SPL robot soccer team competition games at RoboCup 2018
will be played indoor and outdoor between teams of five robots on a 6m x 9m
playing surface. Teams should be able to play on a randomly assigned indoor or
outdoor field within one hour.

The RoboCup 2018 SPL will host both a team competition and a mixed teams
competition.

The team competition will consist of more games for most teams than in recent
years. We expect to qualify 24 teams. The structure from 2017 will be used and
extended in the team competition to allow all teams to play more games and
against teams with similar skill levels. See Appendix A.3 of the

preliminary rulebook for more details.

Teams applying for the team competition may also apply for the mixed team
competition. Each mixed team will consist of two teams. Mixed teams will play
6v6 games on the normal SPL field. Only 4 or 6 mixed teams will be selected to
compete at RoboCup 2018. Teams, who participated in 2017, are encouraged to
select another partner then in 2017. See Appendix B of the

preliminary rulebook for more details.

Qualification

All interested teams must submit an original qualification document. For the
qualification document to be considered, it must (1) be no longer than 6 pages
and (2) include all the following information in sections with the specified
headings:

1.Team Information: the team name, the team leader(s), and the
university/company affiliation(s) of the team

2.Mixed Teams: If the team is interested in participating in the mixed
teams competition, indicate the name of the partner team, the proposed mixed
team name, and the proposed mixed team jersey colour. Include a short note
about infrastructure plans as well as why this team and the proposed partner
wish to perform as a mixed team.

3.Code Usage: acknowledge the team’s use of any other team’s code (1)
previously from 2015 to present and (2) anticipated at RoboCup 2018. If code is
used from other teams, is this code integrated into a code base that is mainly
designed by the applying team? If not, describe in detail the ‘research
publishable’ significant advancements to a module the applying team has made to
the other team’s code release and what advancements the team is currently
pursuing. A module is a larger part of the code base, that has to be changed
significantly. Changing or implementing a behaviour is not a significant
change. If the applying team does not use any other team’s code, state so.

4.Past History: provide game results in RoboCup Open competitions as well
as main RoboCup competitions from 2016 onward. Include opponents and game
scores from each competition in a table. State if the team plans to participate
in any RoboCup Open competitions or friendlies prior to RoboCup 2018.

5.Impact: what is the impact of the team’s participation and research in
RoboCup on (1) the SPL, (2) the team’s university/community

6.Other: present any other information that you believe supports your
application

The written material must be complemented by a link to a video (maximum 5 min
long, uploaded on the team’s web site or on some video server) that
demonstrates the status of the team. The TC uses the video to determine the
readiness of the team to compete effectively, and hence should focus on the
team’s ability to play soccer. Teams who did not participate in the team
competition at RoboCup 2017 must include footage of at least one robot
attempting to kick off and score (this footage must be captured as a single
wide shot with no cuts). In cases where footage from multiple teams is shown
(such as game footage), please include a textual overlay denoting which team is
