The last sentence on the "Getting Help with Ubuntu" slide is a comma splice.

"The installation will finish soon, we hope that you enjoy using Ubuntu!"

These two independent clauses should either be joined by a semicolon ("The
installation will finish soon; we hope that you enjoy using Ubuntu!") or split
into two complete sentences ("The installation will finish soon. We hope that
you enjoy using Ubuntu!").

At the moment the last page of the slideshow introduces the ubuntu forums as a
support resource, but doesn't introduce any other support mechanisms. That's
different to our usual policy of introducing all of the different support
options without favouring any particular one (e.g. the front page of the help
centre). I'd like to see all the support resources introduced.

Also, although the file is called documentation.html, it doesn't introduce the
onboard documentation at all. That should be the first steps for users looking
for answers as it allows them to help themselves.

  * The buildds do not install recommends by default, so add a build
dependency on python-utidylib (LP: #430719).
  * Add the Firefox icon and a javascript-based reflection for it
(LP: #421864).
  * Updated translations from Launchpad.

  [ Dylan McCall ]
  * Fixed comma splice in documentation.html
  * Corrected missing "with" in the third bullet point. Fixed title
(LP: #427257, #427254).
  * Makefile now checks if po2html is installed and exits (slightly more)
gracefully, albeit with rather horrendous looking output :)
  * Added --progress=names when calling po2html. Makefile output is now a bit
tidier.

Bug description:

I am proposing that a set of 7 heavily edited slides for the slideshow be
merged and released. The tone and points made remain similar, but the strings
for those slides have been completely altered. (The beginning, end and Software
Centre slides remain unchanged). It can be seen live at
,
so no need to download the source right away.
The lp:middle-tweaks branch contains the latest version of these changes.

Of course, this is all for a reason. The changes are in response to some
feedback I have collected which suggested that the middle slides were rather
'incomplete' feeling. In response to that, I focused on adding a resolution for
each slide that would stick nicely.
There are many small adjustments that I believe give this a more confident and
consistent voice. While the word count has increased, I believe the goal of
each slide is still streamlined, so it shouldn't effect comprehensibility
(speak of the devil. What a word!) too much.

Naturally, since we are very frozen at this point, this needs the go-ahead. It
would be nice to get this in before a release candidate since that is a point
where we can expect many people to do clean installs and provide last-minute
feedback which we could act upon if necessary.

I should mention that this change is not NEEDED. It is just something that
would be nice. If it will be too difficult for a particular group, I would not
mind pushing it to the side for Lucid Lynx.

I will be discussing this on relevant mailing lists shortly. At the moment, I
have a completely unrelated paper to write. Adiós!

Since karmic, the copyright file says:

-- 8< --

Unless otherwise indicated, artwork is available under the Creative Commons
Attribution Share-alike license v3.0 or any later version. To view a copy of
this license, visit http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ or send a
letter to Creative Commons, 171 Second Street, Suite 300, San Francisco,
California, 94105, USA.

See below for the full text.

The rights in the trademarks, logos, service marks of Canonical Ltd,
as well as the look and feel of Ubuntu, are not licensed under the
Creative Commons license and are subject to the Canonical Trademark
Policy at http://www.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/TrademarkPolicy
-- 8< --

The second paragraph points out that the logo is not distributed under
CC-BY-SA, but does not give any license for it.

The link to the TM policy does not help, because

 (1) The TM policy does not specify a distribution license (and shouldn't
really)

 (2) If (1) was not the case, it is not included verbatim, so the conditions
could be changed after a product release

 (3) even if interpreting the TM policy very liberally (and incompatibly with
both legal and mathematical logic) and inferring that prohibiting commercial
usage implies that non-commercial usage is allowed, this renders Ubuntu
uninstallable in commercial environments.

http://www.ubuntu.com/community/ubuntustory/licensing makes some concessions
that things like artwork and logos do not need to be free software. However, it
does require that "these works do not restrict our ability to make Ubuntu
available free of charge, and that Ubuntu remains re-distributable by you",
which is clearly violated here.

In Jaunty and earlier, artwork and logos were distributed under CC-BY-SA.

These packages currently have above copyright text in Karmic:

human-theme
notify-osd-icons
notify-osd-icons
ubuntu-artwork
ubuntu-wallpapers
ubuntu-xsplash-artwork
usplash-theme-ubuntu

However, only ubuntu-artwork and usplash-theme-ubuntu actually contain logos
and are affected by the second paragraph.

Bug description:
Binary package hint: ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu

Adiós!

The slideshow should choose a specific icon style and use it for all slides.
Right now it's a consistency mess: a tango icon for add/remove, a Human icon
for getting help, neither one for Rhythmbox... I suggest simply using whatever
comes with Ubuntu by default.

Due to the UI freeze exception request (bug 447383) being granted after
NonLanguagePackDeadline, translators were left with no time to do their work
before NonLanguagePackTranslationDeadline.

After speaking with pitti, I'd like to ask for an exception to
NonLanguagePackTranslationDeadline for ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu, so that
translations are still included in the LiveCD.

This would mean:

* Doing a final export of translations either before (21st) or after the RC
(23rd), whatever works best for the release and installer teams, while still
ensuring that translations are on the LiveCD
* Notifying ubuntu-translators about the new deadline (I would take care of
that)
* Accepting an upload of ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu with the new translations

[Ubiquity-slideshow] [Bug 446989] Re: ubiquity slideshow doesn't support RTL

2009-11-13 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package ubiquity - 2.1.0

---
ubiquity (2.1.0) lucid; urgency=low

  [ Evan Dandrea ]
  * Run X with -nolisten tcp (LP: #462394).
  * Make sure we never try to install onto the live filesystem.
  * Only print the filenames being blacklisted if in debug mode.
  * Provide human readable sizes in the partitions-too-small warning
(LP: #298974).
  * Mark the "Installation Complete" window as always on top
(LP: #462178).
  * Fixes from Pychecker for the KDE frontend (kde_ui):
- Don't import datetime or math. The timezone code is in a separate
  module now.
- Remove some unused variables.
- Don't assign to a variable that's going to be immediately discarded.
  * Signal to GTK+ when using a right-to-left language, so that it
composes the interface from right to left (LP: #222845).
  * Signal to the slideshow when the installer is using a right-to-left
language (LP: #446989).
  * Set SUDO_UID and SUDO_GID in ubiquity-dm so ubiquity knows what user
to drop privileges to (LP: #422254).
  * Do not try to configure networking in oem-config (LP: #471498).
  * Make migration-assistant import failures non-fatal to the overall
install.
  * pkgsel now provides a debconf question to avoid warning the end user
when the language packs could not be installed (LP: #471553).
  * Make sure a device exists as part of the grub target device
validation.
  * Allow the user to retry grub installation with a different device on
failure.
  * Automatic update of included source packages: apt-setup
1:0.42ubuntu1, choose-mirror 2.29ubuntu2, clock-setup 0.100ubuntu1,
debian-installer-utils 1.71ubuntu1, grub-installer 1.47ubuntu1, hw-
detect 1.73ubuntu1, netcfg 1.51ubuntu1, partman-base 135ubuntu1,
tzsetup 1:0.26ubuntu1, user-setup 1.28ubuntu1.

  [ Colin Watson ]
  * Add a debian/rules target to run pychecker. I've fixed several warnings,
but there are still several left so this is not yet enabled by default.
  * Fix debconf frontend:
- Start oem-config on stopping rc, as well as when starting display
  managers.
- Add some missing imports (ubiquity.frontend.base.Controller,
  ubiquity.plugin.Plugin, ubiquity.i18n, signal,
  ubiquity.components.install).
- If there's a containing debconf frontend, talk to it rather than using
  debconf-communicator.
- Set a controller in the language plugin.
- Use spaces rather than ${!TAB} in localechooser when using the debconf
frontend, since debconf doesn't support the latter yet.
- Don't handle user-setup preseeding for the debconf frontend.
- Remove unused progress_position handling.
- Fix exception names in ubi-network and ubi-tasks.
  * Require Python 2.5, so we can now use hashlib rather than md5 and avoid
a slew of warnings.
  * Add an intro message noting that we're alpha again.

the slideshow is done after a few minutes though. it would be nice if the
slideshow could adjust it's speed according to the used media so the install

[Ubiquity-slideshow] [Bug 501450] [NEW] Getting help with ubuntu does not change

2010-01-19 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 alpha 1 and tried to install it on an IBM t43.
While watching the tips pane of the installer, I noticed that the last
pane "Getting Help with Ubuntu" and finishes with "The installation will
finish soon. We hope you enjoy ubuntu." stay on for about 40 minutes of
the installation. It came on near 40 % and never changed.

The installation was started at 15h00 EST and as of this ticket was at
84% ( configuring target system ).

The tips pane should continue to rotate or the times should be longer,
but it is hard to estimate ahead of time the installation time, so maybe
just keep rotating the panes until you hit 90% installed ?

[Ubiquity-slideshow] [Bug 471389] [NEW] grammar problem on slide show

2010-01-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

on the slide show, the following currently appears when talking about
openoffice:
"it is useful to create letters, presentations,"

This should be: "it is useful FOR creatING letters, presentations,"

saying "it is useful to" is kind of like saying "it's a good idea to"..
but the slide really wants to talk about why openoffice is useful.

I hope this makes sense. If you want any other little suggestions on
good use of grammar for the slide show, let me know. I don't know how to
view the slideshow without installing ubuntu.

[Ubiquity-slideshow] [Bug 468029] [NEW] "Get Help Online" and "Report a Problem" deserve attention in the installer slideshow

2010-01-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

The installer slideshow is a very useful feature for new users (and old
users alike). I've been using Ubuntu for years, but it still helped me
when I saw the slideshow. I found out about cool features that weren't
given attention.

The last part of the slideshow tells the user where to ask for help.
However, it wasn't pointed out that there are very handy features under
the Help menu of almost every GUI app. I believe that pointing out to
the user (new or old) that "Get Help Online" and "Report a Problem"
exist would be beneficial for bug management and helping users out. The
slideshow is a great place to inform users about this.

btw, I'm not sure if this is the right package for this issue. Please
edit if I'm wrong.

[Ubiquity-slideshow] [Bug 476269] Re: Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, and English variant translations aren't shown during Karmic installation

2010-01-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package ubiquity - 2.1.12

---
ubiquity (2.1.12) lucid; urgency=low

  [ Colin Watson ]
  * Add osextras.unlink_force, equivalent to 'rm -f', to save on tedious
exception handling.
  * Only restart debconf-communicator when changing language, not every time
we switch page. This speeds up page transitions quite a bit, and should
incidentally fix LP: #508725 as well.
  * GTK frontend:
- Check plugin builders as well when adding widgets (setting their
names, making them callable by the toplevel, etc.). This fixes
translations of the language, timezone, and keyboard pages.
  * Fix immediate retranslation when changing language.
  * Add a semaphore to misc.regain_privileges and misc.drop_privileges, so
that a drop/regain pair always returns to the previous state.
misc.drop_all_privileges is now more clearly one-way, enforced by an
assertion.
  * Add a context manager (raised_privileges) and a function decorator
(raise_privileges) that are equivalent to a
regain_privileges/drop_privileges pair, but that wrap up the required
try/finally logic to make it less likely that we'll end up at the wrong
privilege level by mistake.
  * When attempting to upgrade the installer, only stop debconf-communicator
once we've determined that we actually have something to upgrade
(LP: #495175).
  * Require Python 2.6, for the 'with' statement.
  * Move default GRUB target calculation to ubiquity.misc, which is a better
location for common code than ubiquity.components.summary. Try to avoid
using (hd0) as the target (prefer the first device from grub-mkdevicemap
output if possible), and, when installing from a non-CD medium, only
reset the default boot device if we would otherwise end up installing
GRUB to the installation medium.
  * Initialise FilteredCommand.ui_loop_level earlier, just in case
(LP: #484452).

  [ Evan Dandrea ]
  * Allow the user to set a hostname in oem-config.
  * Finally, finally, finally successfully work around GTK+ not
supporting height-for-width in labels.
  * Remove labels created by plugins from the focus chain.
  * Don't try to generate an apparmor cache in oem-config.
  * Slightly better exception printing in scripts/install.py
  * GNOME Bug #56070 (can't click button twice) has long since been
closed. Remove hack.
  * Automatic update of included source packages: localechooser
2.12ubuntu3, user-setup 1.28ubuntu3.

  [ Mario Limonciello ]
  * Drop old hack for reconfiguring mythbuntu-default-settings since
this is fixed in user-setup now.
  * Drop old hack for copying ^xserver-xorg onto the target system. No
longer necessary as thse variables don't exist in current installs.

  [ Dylan McCall ]
  * Use slideshow for language variants if available (LP: #476269).

  [ Michael Terry ]
  * Reset contents of timezone combo boxes every time the timezone page is
entered (LP: #461104).

Kubuntu Lucid Lynx Alpha 2

I have some suggestions for the installation carroussel.

1. The Icon fo konqueror in the carroussel should be the icon of konqueror 4.4
instead of the old one of the 3.x konqueror series that are you using now.
2. The arrows that mark elements on the lists on the carrousel should be blue
instead of brown/orange, blue fits more with kubuntu colors palette.

I don't know if it is the better place to put that but I think it can be
considered a bug isn't it?

  * WebKit puts file URLs in their own domain by default. This means that
anything which checks for the same origin, such as creating an
XMLHttpRequest, will fail unless this is disabled (LP: #532502).
  * Restore Colin's set_locale function. However, this is only half the
puzzle. We need to finish running the language component when the
exit button is pressed when in greeter mode.

  [ Colin Watson ]
  * KDE frontend:
- Fix references to PARTITION_* in PartMan module (LP: #528171).
- Drop real UID/GID when initialising KApplication. The real and
effective IDs need to match, but raising them means we can't talk to
D-Bus. Instead, use saved IDs to store our root privileges so that we
can get them back (LP: #526486).
  * ubiquity-dm: Close stdout from dbus-launch.
  * Automatic update of included source packages: apt-setup 1:0.42ubuntu3,
user-setup 1.28ubuntu4.

[Ubiquity-slideshow] [Bug 538425] [NEW] Slideshow doesn't mention ipod support

2010-03-15 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

In the slide titled "Music and movies in Ubuntu" it reads:
"Plug in an MP3 player to start synchronizing your music collection, or insert
a CD to copy its music to your computer."

The iPod brand is a household name and I believe it would be worth
mentioning in the slideshow.

Also, http://google.com/trends?q=mp3+player,+mp3,+ipod suggests that
many more people are familiar with 'iPod' rather than 'MP3 player'.

We've implemented Michael Forrest's mockup for the new slideshow, which brings

to ubiquity. It now puts items on the install window in slightly different
places and uses the theme colors for the window background.

The result of which, is this:

I've tested this myself and confirmed it working without issue.

[Ubiquity-slideshow] [Bug 476269] Re: Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, and English variant translations aren't shown during Karmic and Lucid installation

2010-03-31 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package ubiquity - 2.2.12

---
ubiquity (2.2.12) lucid; urgency=low

  [ Evan Dandrea ]
  * Accept and discard arguments to the KDE frontend's
on_keyboard_layout_selected function (LP: #552399).

  [ Colin Watson ]
  * Fix pkgsel/ignore-incomplete-language-support check (LP: #527623).
  * KDE frontend:
- Ensure that entries in extra_bar_frames are never None (LP: #536912).
- Lock out manual partitioning operations while the partitioning backend
  is running (LP: #540203).
  * Don't lower-case the locale attribute on frontends. This was added a
long time ago; since then, it's become unnecessary since i18n.get_string
lower-cases the locale itself, and it prevented us from finding
slideshow files for language variants (LP: #476269).
  * Automatic update of included source packages: partman-auto 89ubuntu4,
partman-ext3 58ubuntu2.

  [ Jonathan Riddell ]
  * Move oem-config-prepare-kde.desktop install directory to
/usr/share/applications/kde4/, else it is labelled as a KDE 3
application

The Xubuntu slideshow does not support RTL. The script adds the rtl class to
the correct element, but there is no CSS to handle it.

Unfortunately, the problem isn't dead simple to fix: bullet points are
illogically aligned to the left of list items via the li:before selector, and
there is also an li.nobullet class.

Thankfully, I just learned something! It _is_ possible to set list-style for
individual LI elements; it isn't a global property for the entire list at all.
Shouldn't be hard to remove the use of :before and maintain the same
functionality, which will also magically support RTL. The rest should be pretty
easy.

[Ubiquity-slideshow] [Bug 630875] [NEW] setup screens mention FSpot instead of shotwell

2010-09-05 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat beta
It's a minor cosmetic detail I know but the setup screens that display
information during Ubuntu setup refer to the benefits of F-Spot photo
application instead of the replacement shotwell. Please don't forget to
correct this before the final release.

Please grant a UI freeze exception for ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu 24. This
upload adds new strings and changes the look of the slideshow itself. It does
this to bring the design in line with the new design of the installer in Ubuntu
10.10. I will notify the documentation and translations teams upon acceptance
of this request.

I will be preparing another upload with updated screenshots to reflect changes
to Ubuntu Software Centre and potentially other applications; however, I want
to get this out first so that translators have as much time as possible to work.

[Ubiquity-slideshow] [Bug 633768] [NEW] Maverick slideshow still shows f-spot instead of shotwell

2010-09-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Doing some unrelated testing today I noticed that "ubiquity-slideshow-
ubuntu 23" still shows f-spot whereas Maverick has transitioned
shotwell.

While it's only cosmetic it might be something we should fix by Maverick
final.

ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu (25) maverick; urgency=low

  * Match the Ubuntu theme's color for the header.
  * Update forgotten translation templates. Already has a freeze
exception (LP: #636945).

[Ubiquity-slideshow] [Bug 644784] [NEW] 10.10 meerkat installer slideshow shows f-spot even though shotwell is now the default photo package

Not a bug really, just a bit funny/misleading

The slideshow that runs showing the features and benefits shows f-spot
application. To my knowledge f-spot has been replaced by shotwell.

In the slideshow there are the following strings which mention F-Spot:
"With F-Spot Photo Manager, it is really easy to share, touch-up and
organize digital photos."
"To get started, choose F-Spot from the Graphics Applications menu or attach a
digital camera and follow the prompts."
Because Shotwell has replaced F-Spot in the default installation this strings
should be changed.

As mentioned in an earlier freeze exception request, we were waiting for the
screenshots for the website's Ubuntu 10.10 desktop tour, so that we could also
include them in the slideshow. These have since been produced and I've
uploaded ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu 27, which includes them.

Without these updated screenshots, the installer slideshow will show the Ubuntu
10.04 applications, background, and theme.
