orca

2006-08-29 Thread mike coulombe
Hi, is the version of orca on the live cd the latest version as of this week.
>From the few programs I opened with it things look pretty good.
The only one that crashed was the movie player and the install didn't speak.
But it is definitly on it's way to being a very good operating system for the
blind.
It seems it works on some computers and not on others at this time.
Keep up the good work.

2006-08-29 Thread mike coulombe
Hi, I tried the CD on another computer and it worked.
I couldn't get speech for install, but I was able to read menus,
and edit text. Looks pretty good.

2006-08-29 Thread mike coulombe
Ok, I can get to the setup process,
but when I log back in orca doesn't start.
also when I reboot the computer sometimes orca lets me do the setup process and
sometimes it doesn't speak at all.
I used both ways the ctrl alt f1 and the way of going to the terminal to run it.
Any ideas. My CD is from yesterday, could there be a problem with it.
Thanks Mike.

Re: Orca Running on the Edgy Live CD -- HOWTO

2006-08-29 Thread Joanmarie Diggs
Hi all.

Henrik, this is awesome! Thanks for doing it!!

Minor suggestions:

1. Include a statement about the current need to use a *32-bit* Live CD
rather than the 64-bit one.

2. Under step 4 (exploring the Ubuntu menus) and/or step 5 (installing
Ubuntu), perhaps mention the relevant command just to get the person to
the menus and/or the desktop.

3. Somewhere possibly include a link to the current GNOME Desktop
Accessibility Guide. I've found the keyboard navigation section to be
quite helpful.

Regarding Rich's observations:

> * I used Control-Alt-F1 to bring up a virtual console to do the initial

I agree that this is easier and less likely to result in mistakes. If
there is value in sticking with Alt-F2 for the sake of consistency, what
about checking the "Run in terminal" checkbox after typing "orca" and
before pressing Enter?

> * I logged back in and started up Orca, but then had real problems with

I initially had the same problem and found the same solution to work.
Now I cannot reproduce it to save my life...

I do consistently get an error dialog at this point indicating that the
GNOME Settings Daemon could not be started, but in my limited testing it
doesn't *seem* to be problematic.

I agree. Thanks again!

orca

2006-08-29 Thread mike coulombe
Hi, I used the terminal but something else must come up
because orca didn't start. One time I pressed alt tab and typed orca and it
came up.
However when I started gnome again it didn't no matter what I did so I must not
be at a commend prompt when terminal starts.

This problem has (hopefully) been fixed in pyorbit 2.14.1. I notice
that the package that comes with Edgy is pyorbit 2.14.0, so this is
likely why we still see the SEGV when Orca exits.

I created and used the Edgy Live CD yesterday.

(and blogged about it:
   http://blogs.sun.com/richb/entry/orca_on_ubuntu_edgy_live
 )

I didn't have the benefit of your HOWTO, but I did everything you
suggested albeit in a different way (with thanks to Mike Pedersen for
his help).

Here's some comments:

* First a minor spelling nit. You have "wring" when you mean "wrong".

* I used Control-Alt-F1 to bring up a virtual console to do the initial
run of Orca. It's less to type blindly then Alt-F2 and "gnome-terminal"
and "orca". Alt-F7 to get back to your desktop. Control-Alt-Backspace
  as you suggest to logout.

* I logged back in and started up Orca, but then had real problems with
none of the applications I tried starting up. Visually the little
wheel icon
would "spin" and there would be a "Starting " tab in the
gnome-panel but the application would not come up on the screen. By
going back to the virtual console, I could see that the app was running.

I "solved" this by logging out again, then at the login prompt, rather
than
wait the ten seconds or so for the live CD to automatically startup, I hit
Return. After the desktop was shown, I started up Orca again, and this
time the apps would start up nicely and be spoken by Orca.

This live CD is *really* impressive Henrik. Many thanks to you and your
team for putting it together.

That's true. I think the next 'Knot CD' will be out Thursday or Friday.

FYI: The one I downloaded was the Aug. 28 one, which was not oversized
on i386 (690MB) and ran fine.

The disctree directory stuff you are seeing in Windows is the
Windows-FOSS that is also on the disc.

With the URL Henrik provided, there is always a chance that the CDs
won't work, as these CDs are generated daily, from the current state of
the archive, which means that things can be broken, and often are.

I believe the next test release is not too far off, so unless you are
willing to keep downloading daily CD images to try them out, I suggest
you wait for that test release, to be sure you will get at least a
mostly working CD.

problem with edgy CD

2006-08-29 Thread MICHAEL WEAVER
I have got the Live CD from the URL suggested by Henric.
However for some reason when I boot, the disk churns around for a bit
and I don't get the Ubuntu sound when running Live.
I look at the disk or tried to in Windows and all I see is disk tree or
something like that.
I can't seem to be able to find any other files.
Could this be why I am having trouble booting into edgy?

I've written up a fairly detailed HOWTO in the Ubuntu forums:

Found my live cd problem, now a question

2006-08-29 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi,
Krister here. I wrote to the list and asked a couple days back about a
problem i had when starting up the Ubuntu live cd. It looked like X
didn't start correctly. It turned out that it didn't, because it uses a
screen depth apparently not supported by my screen. It wanted to use
24-bit color, but my screen wants to use 16-bit color, so my question
is: Is there a way to change the screen depth from the boot prompt
thingy and if so, how?
Thanks a lot for any answer.

You can only really do an update if you have a separate home directory
or if you have copied your data to a backup first.

The live CD and install process will run with voice output (though there
may be some quirks in the install -- please report any you find)
