Found out why I can't install anything past Ubuntu 11 on this netbook

2020-04-12 Thread Glenn K0LNY
Hi All,
I've seen the PAE error message on the Ubuntu server and Arch installs when
someone read the screen for me, and I just watched a Youtube that describes how
to get around the error.
It seems that almost all Intel processors after 2000 were made with PAE
(physical Address Extension).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94q9teA0Mn8
shows the installation work-around.
But I'm not sure what will come after I follow those steps, if I will be at a
prompt, or if I will be in an install screen.
Here's another post with some work-arounds:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/117744/how-can-i-install-on-a-non-pae-cpu-error-kernel-requires-features-not-present
I may try the route of Xubuntu 12.10 and upgrade from there if I can find that
image.

Hi Glenn, I’d agree with Alan and suggest you move up to something more recent.

How are you trying to get to your networks in Unity? Unity was my favorite
desktop while it was around. After it went away, I switched to Gnome.

I’m just going by memory, but in Unity, I’d suggest hitting alt+f10 and then
left arrow to get into the system menus. Once you find the network menu item
arrow down to find your wifi networks. I hope this helps. Like I said, I’m just
going off of my memory since I haven’t used Unity in probably around five years.

I downloaded Ubuntu 16.10 from Ubuntu.com and it booted to Unity.

The problem with that is that I cannot get to any of the system Internet and
Networks to connect to my WIFI.

I thought that Mate came starting with 16.

Unity is awful.

If I cannot find 16.10 Mate, how am I supposed to connect to WIFI?

16.10 is long past its support window, I'm afraid.

if you're looking for Ubuntu MATE specifically, their supported releases can be
found at https://ubuntu-mate.org/

Cheers,
