 Dear List,

Monday evening Jonathan Duddington publicate new stable Espeak

For example, in hungarian language this
 version containing critical
important bugfixes with Espeak hungarian speech
 (new or modifyed
language rules, and some modifications with source code
 with hungarian
specific general number suffix exception
 feature).

Luke, my little technical questions is following, because I am
 interest:
Now, Ubuntu Lucid containing Espeak-1.43.0 version.
Ubuntu Core
Developers upgrade Espeak version if a new maintenance
version is awailable
 with espeak.sourceforge.net official website (only
if the last version
 number is changed)?
What the final development date before this upgrade must
 happening?
What the final date after this upgrade is impossible with actual

development Ubuntu versions?

Temporary I do a PPA package with this
 version, and copyed this package
with vinux/vinux-lucid repository, but
 better if official Lucid version
containing new maintenance version.
I am
using this version with day by day, and not see any problem.

I doed a

Improving Gnome Desktop Accessibility

2010-03-02 Thread Arky
Hi,

To have a much improved Gnome Desktop accessibility experience for the next
2.29.x release, we need to fix quite a few old bugs. Most of bugs appear to low
priority but are very important for people with disabilities.

Clock-applet inaccessible (regression)
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=581351

Notification Area icons are inaccessible
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=611562

panel_toplevel_construct_description should provide less technical descriptions
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61

Desktop name is now x-nautilus-desktop (regression)
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=555425

search: name instead of
x-nautilus-search
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=610789

Pathbar 'drive' 'previous folder' icon inaccessible
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=610809

Switch to notification area shortcut key

Hi Jacob,

I just think priorities should be on actual performance and

crash-related problems first. They're the ones that hit hardest and make
the most impression when they do.

Yes, you are right. Last release of ubuntu failed to get many a11y users for
this very reason. We are making good progress and would hopefully iron out most
issue leading upto Gnome 3.0. Think of my bugs as papercuts for a11y :)

Subject: Cannot get console login at Lucid startup

 Hi,

I know this isn't strictly an accessibility thing, but I seem to have
 exhausted all other possibilities.

I'm running Lucid from a live cd of about 5 days ago. When I start the
system and attempt to login at the audible prompt, my system locks up on
most attempts. Why it works sometimes, especfialy if I wait about a
minute, is a mystery. Anyway, I've removed the file /etc/init.d/gdm,
as suggested in the Ubuntu forums. Also, I have run sudo update-rc.d
gdm remove, also as suggested. Gdm is nowhere in system services; I've
looked with bootup manager and sysv-rc-conf. What am I missing?

To start this system, I do as follows:

 power on;
 wait for audio prompt;
 switch to another console;
 log in;
 enter sudo gdm-stop;
 enter my password;
 wait about 3 seconds;
 type startx.

When I hear the music, I wait about 30 seconds, then manually start
orca. When I start this way, I have to manually authenticate my wifi
connection and enter login password to unlock the keyring.

This problem did not present when I installed the system. Any ideas?

 Best Regards,

 Dave H.

Hi, Arky. Someone just pointed out this problem in my Vinux/Ubuntu
Lucid ISO. I turned off Static Application Switcher, and turned on
Application Switcher, and reassigned Tab to
 next_panel, and Tab to prev_panel.

The results are awesome. I've been using the Compiz magnifier for
over a year, and I've never been able to access the panels accept with
the mouse. Getting next_panel and prev_panel working in Compiz is
huge. This is the last major accessibility issue I know of with
 Compiz.

I think Lucid would be a good platform to switch to the normal
application switcher, and fixing this key binding should be done as
 well.

 Thanks,
 BIll

Hi, Arki, and thanks for working on the bugs. I think there are a few
of us who would like to help get Orca working well in Lucid. I've
installed alpha1, and have run into the pyatspi bug you know about.
Any help getting Orca working well is appreciated. I'm comfortable
debugging C code, but I don't understand the whole D-bus/atspi/COBRA
stuff at all, or even if that's where the bug lies.

Another issue with continues to be pulseaudio. Disabling it with the
.pulse_a11y_nostart hack leads to far superior audio performance. Do
you think we have time to fix the pulseaudio problems for Lucid, or
should we focus on making the accessibility install with pulseaudio
disabled less buggy and more usable? I'd like to help track down bugs
in Lucid related to accessibility from now until the April release.

 Thanks,

When I choosed accessible profile with screen reader support, the boot

I was having the same problems with pulseaudio. The pauses

remember to run spd-conf and set it to use alsa instead of
pulse?  I am using 64 bit Karmik.

 blind users
absolutely must do a few things on linux, Karmic can do the
 job.
However, I found there to be a delay due to pulseaudio of
 about 1/2
second, making key and word echo useless. The delay is so
 bad, I
don't see how I could use Karmic with Orca full-time.
 I installed
voxin as well (far nicer than espeak, IMO), and had two
 additional
problems, besides the delay. When using speech-dispatcher,
 speech
would pause every few seconds for about half a second,
 which is
seriously annoying. When using Gnome Speech Services,
 instead of
pausing, it simply stops speaking, so it is very tedious to
 listen to
an entire document. I suspect both problems are related to
 the delay
 in pulseaudio.

With the virtual machine install, I was able to get Orca
 working well
by uninstalling pulseaudio, as described here:

 http://live.gnome.org/Orca/UbuntuKarmic

However, when installed on my laptop, removing pulseaudio
 caused
speech-dispatcher to hang, with 100% CPU utilization. So,
 for now, I
have no suitable Karmic-based Orca solution. Are other
 people seeing
the delay problem? Is it only with the x64 version? Are
 you using
Karmic/Orca as your main machine, or just playing around a
 bit?

 Thanks,

Has anyone gotten Orca working well
in Karmic Beta?  If so, what
changes did you have to make?

One thing that seems to have helped was to remove
 pulseaudio.
However, before that, you need to install alsa-oss, or you
 wont have a
sound system at all.  This seems to have made Orca
 able to clear out
the speech-dispatcher queue of sound you don't want to
 hear.  It's
still pretty unstable.  I haven't been able to use it
 in any
productive way for more than a couple minutes at a time
 before
 something crashes.

Re: enabling the root account in karmic, does anyone know how?

2009-08-08 Thread Arky (Rakesh Ambati)
Hi Mike,

Have a look at GDM configuration file provided in this post.

http://playingwithsid.blogspot.com/2009/07/gdm-timed-login.html

Also root accounts need to have id = 0 and in /etc/sudoers file you add a line
like this. Replace accnt with the account name.

accnt ALL=(ALL) ALL

 Hi I tried to create a custom.conf
file for gdm,  but that didn't work. Does anyone know
how to enable the root account in Karmic?
 Mike.

 Dear users,

I have tried The procedure, which can
guarantee You, that YOu will be able to boot to Windows Xp
if YOu will remove Linux operating system according to my
 directions.

If You will not be able to boot to
Windows XP, You are having two possibility.
 1. Remove partitions, which are used by Ubuntu Karmic, I Am
strongly recommending You to rather use stable live CD for
removing and modifiing The partitions, because kernel of
development releases can be unstable. Use gparted only in
Live CD mode while YOu will boot from this live CD.

Or You would try to manually edit Grub configuration file
and specifi to boot WIndows XP. try to please a sighted
person, if there is item for starting Windows XP. If no,
installation program for Karmic did not add The Grub
configuration for starting Windows XP. Try to look at The
partitions, if You did not removed NTFS partition.

So how to remove Linux safely and how to recover Windows
 SXP to be bootable again?

Boot from a stable Ubuntu live CD, I Am strongly
recommending You to boot from Ubuntu Jaunty official
 release.

Use gparted to remove Linux based partitions. Before
removing Linux svap, disable it by using F10 function key
and right arrow key to get to The partition sub menu. And
press down arrow key until YOu will hear svap off.

This will disable svap file. Because Linux kernel will
probably use Your svap file eventhough You will boot from A
live CD. Linux kernel is loving The svap file very much, and
if it will see this partition, kernel will start to use it.

When You will have svap file off, You can remove Linux
svap, and extended partition. You can also remove EXT4
partition if You will experiment with Ubuntu Karmic, EXT3
file system will be used while using older Ubuntu releases.

When you will have removed all Linux partitions, restart
Your computer with Ubuntu live CD on YOur CD boot drive.
Start gparted again and when cursor will be on a NTFS
partition, explore The Gparted menus to find The flags sub
menu. Enable The boot flag in The dialog box. Your NTFS
partition must be bootable, so The boot flag must be turned
 on.

Apply the changes and restart Your computer without Ubuntu
live CD. I found out, that by using boot flag, The boot
sector will be working fine and Your WIndows XP will very
 probably start fine without problems.

There is also other procedure, so user have to use The
console and before triing to install other operating system,
user can backup several sectors of his hard drive to The
floppy drive or to The USB disk. I can explain both
procedures for this. I Am not author of those procedures.
One professional from GRML E-mail conference described this
procedure for backing up sectors to USE or to A floppy
drive. I will try to send A direct link to his article,
eventhough The whole article is focused on installing GRML,
The procedure for backing up and restoring from this backup
 is included.

I tried The procedure for recovering Windows XP to The boot
state after removing Linux distro. I tried this procedure
for Opensuse, but i think, that boot flags will be working
fine, because i used Gparted from Ubuntu to set The NTFS
boot flag TO The on state.

Hi Mike,

Yes, I have few desktops and a laptop running latest karmic there isn't any
trouble. I faced a problem in on of the desktop which reported filesystem
inconsistency and refused to boot. After running fsck few times it started
booting normally.

Tagging a11y bugs in Launchpad

2009-05-26 Thread Rakesh arky Ambati

Hi,

It is not very easy to track all the a11y related bugs in launchpad. Perhaps
taking cue from Gnome bugzilla practice 1, I think it would be a good idea to
tag a11y launchpad bugs as 'accessibility' 2 .

Any ideas?

Improving Accessible Installation Selection
