accessible ubuntu startup

2010-08-12 Thread Josh Kennedy
Hi
I think I know how the mac works like that. When the mac starts up it starts a
timer in the background which counts down maybe 10 or 20 seconds or so. If you
do nothing, it triggers voiceover to start up. first it plays some audio files
of a guy saying: if you are blind and want to use voiceover press command f5. I
think ubuntu could be made more like vinux make shortcuts to start orca and
restore speech and things.

Hi,

Since orca works on the lxde desktop, are there any plans on making an
accessible ubuntu that uses lxde?

Microsoft Windows and paying thousands for screen-readers? try out NVDA, get a

knoppix-adriane Linux desktops. Knoppix ubuntu and vinux-cli-max are the most
accessible for beginners. also try vinux-gui and encourage those at

adriane-knoppix

2010-01-04 Thread Josh
Hi,

Knoppix-adriane also works good. perhaps a version of ubuntu with the lxde
desktop and orca included? I think lxde is much more responsive than gnome is
and works good with orca. the only distro that lets us use lxde is currently
knoppix adriane.

default voice in Ubuntu

2009-12-21 Thread Josh
Hi,

In future versions of Ubuntu with orca go to:

http://espeak.sourceforge.net/test/latest.html

Get the latest espeak, use that since it will always have the best
pronunciation. also instead of using the default variant, why not use either
the klatt variant, klatt2, or klatt3?
like:
en-us+klatt2
this means when I install it in windows speak using american english and use
the klatt2 variant . klatt voices make espeak sound a lot more like eloquence.

logging into ubuntu

2009-12-13 Thread Josh
Hi,

I have some screen shots of Ubuntu trying to log in. If there's anyone sighted
who could have a look at the .tif images email me at jkenn...@gmail.com . after
orca asks me to log out, I log out, hear the drum beats and then type ubuntu
hit enter, assume I'm on tthe password field, let it blank, hit enter again,
nothing happens. I'm booting from the .iso so its like booting the live cd.

Ubuntu Karmik in virtual machine

2009-12-12 Thread Josh
Hi,

I started Ubuntu Karmik in the virtual machine booting it from the .iso file I
downloaded as a guest in windowws xp with 512mb of ram. I don't know when the
boot screen appears because I'm blind and cannot see the screen. The only
sighted person in my house is 2-years old, too young to read the screen and
tell me what's going on. I need some audio queues to tell me when the boot
screen coomes up, some shortcut to activate Orca. I got it talking from the
live cd iso last night but that was by accident. I tried 3 or 4 times with no
success. Can you please make Ubuntu as user-friendly as the mac is?
accessibility should begin at the boot menu whether it be beeps to confirm the
screen is up double beeps for keypresses different pitched beeps to let me know
accessibility has been activated etcetera. I really want to install and try
Ubuntu in the vm I created for it but cannot because I can't get Orca talking.
last night it talked but it wanted me to log out and log back in. maybe when
accessibility is selected different gnome sounds are also loaded or something.

ubuntu 9.10 vm help

2009-12-11 Thread Josh
Hi,

I've set up a Ubuntu 9.10 virtual machine on my netbook. First I have no way of
telling when the boot screen comes up so I can choose accessibility. So anyway
it logs in, I hit alt f2 type orca, hit enter and set it up. then it asks me
to log out I hit y and enter. it logs out. now I'm stuck. after a while I hear
three quick drum beats. now what do I type? better yet can a beep be added so I
know when I'm at the boot screen? and do I type username hit enter or password,
enter, or do I hit tab to move to the next edit field? I wish Ubuntu talked
from the beginning like the apple computers talk from startup almost. I'm glad
also I'm running in a virtual machine that way my host OS is still fine.

orca out of the box

2009-12-10 Thread Josh
Hi,

I think in the next release when ubuntu live cd/dvd starts up it should detect
the sound card then say: if you're blind do this to start the live cd with orca
and dothat to start the installer with orca. make it more like the mac with
voiceover kind of.

Xubuntu is likely to become more accessible before Kubuntu does, as
Xubuntu uses similar libraries and frameworks to GNOME.

Fw: XFCE desktop

 Hi,
Actually, I completely forgot about XFCE in my previous message. Yes, XFCE
is also one of the desktops that is adding screen reader and accessibility
support. I believe XFCE 4.4 uses the same gtk2 accessibility mottle that
Gnome uses. I haven't tried it myself, but orca should work with XFCE 4.4
and later. I'll have to install it and try it sometime.
FYI, if you want to install XFCE under Ubuntu you can run apt-get like
 this
 sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
in gnome-terminal and it will install XFCE for you. Then, all you have to
do is change the session manager to login using XFCE instead of gnome.
If you want to install the KDE 4.0 desktop when it is released you can do
 something like
 sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
and it will install the latest version of the KDE desktop Ubuntu has on
 there servers.
Just for your information Ubuntu has two versions besides the main Ubuntu
disk called Kubuntu and Xubuntu. Kubuntu comes with KDE instead of Gnome,
and Xubuntu comes with XFCE instead of Gnome.
 Cool huh?

ubuntu with low ram

2008-02-06 Thread josh
Hi,

I found the following website interesting. but I have one or two questions.
1. Could a live cd of ubuntu be created specifically designed for low ram?
like we could have a ubuntu lowram disc and a regular ubuntu disc?
2. Can this install be performed with orca running and ESpeak as the
synthesizer?
3. will abiword and the lite spreadsheet numcrunch I think it's called work
with oca?

xubuntu and orca

Hi,

Does anyone know if the latest version of xubuntu has orca included? I
think my computer would be able to handle xubuntu better because it
doesn't take up nearly as much memory. But also if orca is not part of
the xubuntu live cd then could someone forward my request to the
developers that orca be made to work with xubuntu? or some screen
reader be made to work with xubuntu , the xfsce desktop and gnome?

someone let me know. If not, please forward my request to the

Hi, I know the problem with orca has not been fixed yet, but I downloaded
the latest live CD for a friend and found the following.
When I tried to boot from it. It got a little ways into the process and
then I heard it try to access my floppy.
This happened several times, so I put a disk in the drive. Once it saw it,
the system booted fine. Has anyone else run across this problem.
Apparently it wanted to mount that drive before continuing.

[Bug 42308] Re: On-screen keyboard (gok v1.0.7-0ubuntu3) fails

2006-08-02 Thread Josh Faulkner
Okay. Here is my experience with this bug:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ gok --sync
GTK Accessibility Module initialized
/dev/js0: No such file or directory
The program 'gok' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device'.
  (Details: serial 238 error_code 169 request_code 147 minor_code 3)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
application finalize called

What you might need to know is that I also use the IOGear MiniView Micro 2-port
KVM switch with built in cables. I have a feeling that might be the problem.
Please let me know if you need any more information! Thanks! Best of luck!
