Hi, In maverick, how do you get out of the menu on the top panel once you right arrow into it? I hit escape twice and get to the same menus, but I can't get back to the point where I can use alt and f1. 2, I don't see a orca directory in my home directory anymore. here is a rough draft of the guide
Hi, I will be gone for a few days, but here is a rough draft of some things I put together for a guide so far. I hope this will be useful. I will work on this more when I get back. The following was done in a few minutes time, but I will clarify things better when I add more Written by Michael Coulombe. A basic guide to Orca and Ubuntu. X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 080807-0, 08/07/2008), Outbound message X-Antivirus-Status: Clean This is my first attempt at putting a guide together for new users. Note, I hope this information will be helpful, but I do not guarantee any of the things listed here to work. Use this information at your own risk. In other words, I will not be held responsible if anything happens. This guide is free. Feel free to give it to anyone you want to give it to. You may also feel free to add to, word better or improve this guide. Ok, with that out of the way, here we go. I started using Ubuntu a few years ago and have been given a lot of help by others on and off the Ubuntu list and the Orca list. So I thought I would share a little of what I know about Linux for those who are thinking about giving it a try. This guide will include some of the things I have found to be useful when using Linux. Since I use Ubuntu, I will be talking about that operating system, but there are several good Linux distributions out. Ubuntu for example is a completely free operating system. This means you can share it with anyone and install it on as many computers as you like. I am assuming you know your computer, and know how to do things like getting it to boot from the CD, so I will not go in to computer language in this guide. But I will tell you the easiest way I have found to do things. A few notes. Linux has a lot to offer, and it is a wonderful operating system for the blind. It is getting more accessible all the time, but there are some things you should know right off before starting to learn it. Ubuntu is a Linux operating system. You are not using windows and should know you will have to learn a few things. In order to take full advantage of the Linux operating system, you will have to learn to use the consul, which is known as the terminal in gnome the graphical desktop. If you do not want to learn the terminal at all or do not have patience, you should probably stick with another operating system. If you know dos, learning the terminal should be fairly easy for you. If you do not know dos, you will have a little to learn. The terminal is used by typing in commands. There are a lot of very good programs that run in the terminal, and at times the terminal can make your Linux experience easier and more accessible. For example, updates can be obtained with speech feedback easier from the terminal. Wile we are on the subject of speech. Remember you are not using a windows screen reader. While you may find some of Orca's commands similar, it will be different from a windows or mac screen reader. You should also know that Orca and Ubuntu are always being improved. If you don't like something now, it may be to your liking in the next release. With that said, lets get to the operating system. First of all, I suggest downloading the latest live CD or DVD image of the latest final release of Ubuntu. The nice thing about Ubuntu is that you can try the operating system with out making any changes to your computer. In fact you can actually use the live CD to get files off of your computer if the operating system crashes. Running the live CD. Once you write the live CD image to a disc do the following. First boot your computer from the CD. The drive should stop in a short time, and you will be in the language menu. English is first, so I will use it for these instructions. If you do want English, press enter once. Next press the f5 key and let it go. Then press the number 3 key and let it go. Now press enter twice. The system will boot in a few minutes, but Orca usually doesn't start. Once the computer is booted, do the following. First, hold down the alt key and press the f2 key, and then let both keys go. In a few seconds type Orca and press enter. When it comes up speaking, you can inter the preferences menu and make your choices. I suggest quitting Orca after you make the changes and restarting it using the steps listed above. Now you can play around with Ubuntu and see if you like it. Installing Ubuntu. As of this writing the installer doesn't work with Orca from the desktop. However, there is a release of Ubuntu you can download that you can install with Orca. The following are the instructions for installing the original Hardy release. Installing Ubuntu hardy with Orca. Note, this only works with the original release. Put the CD in the computer and turn it on. Once at the boot screen you will be at the language menu. English is the first choice. If you need another language, get sig
does anyone think a basic guide for new users is a good idea?
I am sending this to both the ubuntu accessibility and orca list. Hi, since I started using linux a few years ago I have received a great deal of help from this list. I may have found a fairly easy way to install ubuntu with orca
Hi, this is some info that I discovered by accident, but it may provide a way to install intrepid with orca. I didn't have time to test this, but will in the next few days. I discovered that if you enable accessibility on the hardy live cd with f5 and the number three keys when you boot the live CD, you can set up the root account and log into it like you can on a installed system. However, for some reason if you do not enable accessibility until you run orca after the live CD boots. You can still set up the root account, but for some reason you can not log into it. I will test this later, and if ubiquity works ok we should have a way to install with speech even though it will mean setting up the root account first. I really don't know why this can not be a option by default. The other thing I don't know yet is if installing from the root account will have any effect on the install process. Anyway I just thought I would share that information. Mike. -- Ubuntu-accessibility mailing list Ubuntu-accessibility@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-accessibility

Hi, I installed the python-speechd package in hardy, but still do not see speech-dispatcher in the orca choices. I must have missed something here. Is there something else I have to do to get speech-dispatcher to work, or is it not working in hardy. The only reason I need it is so I can use orca while playing music. Can settings be saved to a usb drive?
Hi, I work on different computers, and wondered if there is a way to save settings for the live cd on a usb drive. Oralux had this feature, and would come up talking using the settings you saved to a usb drive when you loaded the live cd again. This feature in ubuntu would be handy, if it is possible. I have a question about updates?
However, I was looking in software sources and saw a box for proposed updates. After checking it, I see updates almost everyday. What is the deal with these? Are they bug fixes, or just things someone thought of later? Today I think I even saw a kernel update, which I thought was never updated once a release becomes final. Thanks for any info, Mike. a question about the windows installer?
Hi, I found the windows installer that installs ubuntu inside windows to work very well. But can anyone tell me why the following didn't work. I thought it would be a good idea to carry ubuntu on a flash drive so I could install it on peoples computer. I copied the content of the live CD to my flash drive, and tried the installer. It worked and got to a point where it asked me to reboot, but shortly after starting to do the actual install it crashed. I rebooted and found that the installer did copy files from the flash drive, but it didn't create a image like it does when you do this from the CD. Also, it copied files much faster from the flash drive, so maybe it didn't copy everything it needed. My question is, is there a way to get this installer to do what it has to from a flash drive? a question about Lukes fix to the installer?
Hi, I tried the installer using the instructions given. I had the following results. When I set the orca preferences first, everything worked very well. However, I tried this again, but didn't set the orca preferences. Instead I did alt tab and started doing the install. The problem I had was Orca would keep repeating things. For example, when I pressed tab it would say tab 45 times. I don't know if this is a bug, or just a fluke that happened to me, but I wanted to ask incase anyone else had the same problem. I did the install again today setting the preferences first and everything worked fine. The only thing I changed was to turn key echo off. a question about the live cd?
Hi, I just got back from vacation and see a message that the installer now works with orca. Good job Luke. a possible bug.
Hi, I have noticed a strange problem with orca, and don't know if this is a orca bug, or something in ubuntu. Orca will start fine, and pressing alt f1 will get it to say it is in the menu. But several times when using the keys to hear the different menus, I got no speech. At other times the first column would read fine, but when trying to use right arrow to go to the next column of menus, I got no speech. Re starting orca a time or two always corrected this problem. I just wanted to make this known so it can be fixed if possible before release. I also notice the wireless network manager that was in the internet menu is gone again. a question about installing the live cd to hard drive
Hi, I am going to be going back to Michigan the state I grew up in for a few days next week. I would like to help some people get set up with ubuntu while I am there. Chances are most of the time I will not have any sighted help. My question is, since the installer isn't working with orca yet. If I copy the content of the live CD to a blank hard drive with a fat 32 partition would the computer boot from it that way? I would try this before I leave California, but I don't have a extra PC to format at the moment. If anyone has tried this and found it to work let me know. At least this would get a few people going with ubuntu, and they could re install later on a linux partition if they wanted to. I think one or two of the computers may still have windows 98 in them, so in those cases I can install inside windows. But I'm sure most of them have been formatted. Thanks for any suggestions Mike. update manager
Hi, I haven't heard this mentioned so here is what I have noticed as of two days ago. for a long time now the update manager has worked pretty good with orca from the users account. While you lost speech between the time the updates start downloading to the time the finished results are turned over to the update manager. It worked pretty good. However, I notice that two days ago after getting updates. After you press the check for updates button, it asks for your password and then you loose speech completely. Even after the update list is loaded, you are not able to choose using orca because it no longer speaks. Just thought I would list my experience incase others are noticing the same thing. I use the terminal to get updates quite often, and that still works fine. But the update manager was also nice because you could pick the updates you want to install. Mike. X-Antivirus: avast! possible bug
Hi, I have played with different ways to start orca and found the following. When I start orca manually, it starts fine the first time. But, when I set orca to start when I log in, it starts, but I get no other speech after the welcome message. Starting it manually again once or twice corrects this problem. So maybe the problem is in gdm or another program trying to start at the same time. I tried this on three different computers and got the same results. Over all, I have to say, hardy is turning out to be pretty good. Ok, I started the installer from the live CD, followed the instructions and chose ubuntu when the computer restarted. This time I left it alone, and did hear the login tune played four times. In time I rebooted because the computer didn't. Hey, it worked fine. I had to start orca manually, but everything works. I did notice like with my full install, for some reason many times orca starts and crashes the first time. The second time I started orca, I got the message desktop.
