a question about the windows installer?
Hi, I found the windows installer that installs ubuntu inside windows to work very well. But can anyone tell me why the following didn't work. I thought it would be a good idea to carry ubuntu on a flash drive so I could install it on peoples computer. I copied the content of the live CD to my flash drive, and tried the installer. It worked and got to a point where it asked me to reboot, but shortly after starting to do the actual install it crashed. I rebooted and found that the installer did copy files from the flash drive, but it didn't create a image like it does when you do this from the CD. Also, it copied files much faster from the flash drive, so maybe it didn't copy everything it needed. My question is, is there a way to get this installer to do what it has to from a flash drive? Ubuntu Windows installer, now with accessibility!
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi all You may or may not have heard about the windows installer that is available on the Ubuntu live CD. This installer allows you to install Ubuntu onto a virtual disk, within your Windows installation, so you don't have to worry about setting asside dedicated hard disk space to install Ubuntu. As of now, the windows installer offers accessibility options to the user. The accessibility options that are available are the same as what is available from the live CD boot menu, which means you can set up the windows installer, choosing the accessibility profile you want. During the install, and on the final installed system, accessibility will be enabled according to the settings of the accessibility profile you have chosen. Please spread the word about this, as this is a great way to get new users involved with trying out Ubuntu. windows installer
Hi, just a update for anyone who is interested. I have been experimenting with the ubuntu installation I did from windows a few days ago. So far, I have to say it seems pretty stable. The windows installer was very accessible, and the system seems to work fine. One thing, there is no way of knowing when the install is finished. It use to be you could press enter and if the install was done, the CD would come out. Apparently this has changed. Even when I installed from the latest live CD on a linux partition, I had to have a sighted person click restart before the CD would come out. windows installer, pretty nice.
Ok, I started the installer from the live CD, followed the instructions and chose ubuntu when the computer restarted. This time I left it alone, and did hear the login tune played four times. In time I rebooted because the computer didn't. Hey, it worked fine. I had to start orca manually, but everything works. I did notice like with my full install, for some reason many times orca starts and crashes the first time. The second time I started orca, I got the message desktop. This install is slightly slower, but so far it seems to be working fine. Pretty nice to be able to install this way. It would be nice if the bootloader could beep at the prompt. Mike. out four times that the login tune was played. After waiting a lot of time, a half hour or so, I rebooted because the computer didn't do this on it's own. I downarrowed once after I felt the hard drive access and pressed enter. Hey, I got the login sound and did log in. Orca didn't start, but I started it manually. I have noticed even with my full install of ubuntu that often orca starts and seems to crash the first time. For what ever reaso nI get no speech after the welcome message. Starting it again corrects this problem. Mike. X-Antivirus: avast! After talking with our installer developers, the issue of accessibility not working is known, and no solution has yet been found. I hope to have a look myself today, to see if I can help try and resolve the issue. Thanks. windows installer
Hi, so did orca work when you started it manually. Also, after you rebooted, how long did the installation take. I can't see the screen, and after rebooting and choosing ubuntu, I waited 10 minutes and assumed it wasn't working since I heard no sounds at all. Was the install fully automatic after you rebooted, or does something have to be chosen. Re: Hardyheron Alpha5 Windows installer problem
Dear List! I am downloaded February 25 dayli build of Hardy alpha 5 iso, and downloaded Wubi-8.04-alpha-rev431.exe file from www.wubi-installer.org website. Putted same folder the .exe file and the .iso file. Started the installation, selected language with hungarian, writed username with hammera, writed password, and the accessibility dialog, choosed screen reader. Clicked the forward button, and clicked the install button. The installation is worked succesfully. After the restart, choosed Ubuntu in operating systems. The system begun boot, and after a lot of time, begun automatic install the new system. Orca not speech, but I hear two for Ubuntu sounds for installation. When my hard disk don't copyed nothing, pressed enter key and my computer restarted successfully. Retry choosed Ubuntu with boot menu and pressed enter key. On The login screen, typed my user name and typed my password, and I surprised: the keyboard laiout not set with hungarian language (z and y letter replaced but I don't no). The Orca screenreader not started automaticaly (Normal installation is started automaticaly the new system if installed the ubiquity application). The accessibility settings is not take effect (normal installation is good if installing hardy with Ubiquity application). I know this is a test version, possible fix these problems in final release? Hardyheron Alpha5 Windows installer problem
Dear List! I am tried installed Hardyheron Alpha5 release with Windows installer (wubi.exe). I setup these preferences: Language: hungarian Username: hammera Password: my password. Reenter my password. The access settings window, I choosed screen reader and click forward button. And last step, click the install button. The installer making prepare the image in target drive, the percentage is 100% in finish time. But this job is finished, this error message in display: "Ubuntu installer Could not access the CD, please make sure other applications are not using it and try again Retry Cancel" If I clicked the Retry button, the installer making retry the image, but in finish, the error message is displayed again. Why this message? No another application using the cd. I click the cancel button the error message (Couldnt access the cd error message). The installer is closed, but not put the boot.ini file the hardy boot loader. Luke, what the terminal installer command name? In hardy live cd you doing the second menu item, with start the installer before desktop load. Re: about the windows installer
Perhaps there is second boot option in the Windows boot manager. Look at boot.ini what is there. Ok, I tried the menu option on the live CD that says it will install ubuntu in windows. This is very accessible, and guided me through the process. However, after rebooting. I don't see a way to start ubuntu. There was a win boot directory, but running that file didn't work. Any ideas. Mike. X-Antivirus: avast!
