[ubuntu-art] Metacity Idea

2005-12-07 Thread Viper550
Okay, so my last idea turned out to be a SystemG clone (oops!), but I
did find a new Metacity idea for the new look of Dapper on Gnome-Look today;

http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=31877

It's kinda like my idea, but does some twists to the glassy brown
idea. Also, the author made a Blue version too! Maybe for Dapper, we
could make people happy by leaving a Human Blue preset in the Themes
configuration for our Brown hating users! It kinda looks like the new
SUSE theme in a way as well!

So, who likes it?

Yes, they do look like Vista, but don't forget that we've been imitating
Windows for ages! Motif Window Manager and CDE kinda looks like the
Windows 3.1 interface, KDE 1.0 and 3.5 kinda looks like Windows 9x and
XP, and any theme that has a Minimize button, a Restore button, and an
Close button in that order are imitating Windows 9x and above! That
these days is the industry standard and we know it! Besides, Vista
buttons are all touching, on the theme it's the first 2, then a space,
then the exit button.

This really is not true, and not the optimal course for Free Software. The
GNOME project is specifically avoiding imitation, emulation or cloning of
the Windows user interface *where it matters*, because it does not encourage
innovation, and users react negatively to an interfaces that looks like what
they're familiar with, but does not *work* like what they're familiar with.

Slashdot seems to run a lot of obituaries. Perhaps there should be a
   topic for it.
There already is. It's called the BSD section. - Anonymous Coward

Like my comment on the GNOME-look page, it looks lovely, but sadly for this, I
think we ought not to imitate anything which Vista, or for that manner, and
other commercial operating system. I'd suggest the metacity window
decorations that this theme uses:

For something along the lines of default Dapper. :)
