[ubuntu-art] [Ponder] Glassy Scroll Bars

2006-06-27 Thread Who

If we use

scrollbar_color = "#anynum"

in the engine section of a gtkrc then you get glassy (scrollbars)

I have no colour set, but I use the same colour as the buttons. If we
are going for glassy then this could be an option

I use the autopackage version from

http://inkscape.org/download.php

I have never had anby problems, it added an item to my menu and it
provides an easy way to uninstall.

I have added it to the top of the wiki page as an alternative

[ubuntu-art] [Ponder] Glass Logo

2006-06-27 Thread Who

I dunno if it fits in this stage, but I think it does

I did some glassy Ubuntu logos, the colours in the orange one are
identical to the Human folder icon.

I added a colourless logo so we can see what it looks like with no
colour - just in case we move browner :)

[ubuntu-art] [Ponder] Fyre textures

2006-06-27 Thread Who

Frank/Kennith: Is wikiing pages preferable to submitting to the mailing list?

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/FyreTextures

These textures are made with fyre and gimp (to provide a browner backgroun)

As we are in early stages I haven't spent ages on them (for example
getting the colours just right), but they are very striking, and I
think could work great on a splash, usplash, login screen and
wallpaper

My current wallpaper making use of these is probably not 'ubuntuified'
enough, but it is here so you can see the effect

[ubuntu-art] PONDER: Development

2006-06-27 Thread Troy James Sobotka
It should be noted that Mark wants to proceed along
the lines of the GDM logon splash in terms of the
glossy look.

This means that during the proposal phase, we should
aim to keep focused development using the gloss look.

To this end, I provided a sample textural reference page,
which Frank has already noted. It is purely to start
the braindump of ideas, namely in three primary areas:

1) Types of gloss -- diffuse or more sharp specular,
although wide specular. A good example of this
is the sheen on the shield compared to say, the sheen
   on the vinyl.

2) Textural possibilities for wallpapers. We run into
issues with the wallpaper and a glossy look when
you attempt to apply it to a large image. This means
that the traditional "pillbox" gloss is probably out
for the wallpaper. We should be considering how to
integrate the gloss feel into a larger image. There
are a few patterns on the texture page to reference
   this sort of approach.

3) Colour spread. The magical wallpaper of Breezy was quite
good, and I would prefer it to the rather sweepy feel
of the current Dapper wallpaper. That said, perhaps we
can work towards a very distinctive "at a glance" Ubuntu
look based on something else. There are a few textures
there that might trigger something for further discussion.

Again, the whole point of this phase is to brainstorm on this
list regarding directions. Bear in mind that we already have
the glossy (albeit type unknown) facet locked, as well as our
Ubuntu default palette (that is more or less wound into the
Human icon set as well.)

Good luck.

Starting today and lasting up to the 6th of July, which is thursday next week,
you can send in all your exciting, fun and wacky ideas for the Ubuntu Human
themed artwork. What we're looking for is texture references, material
examples and possibly audio and video samples conveying your ideas.

These textures, materials and other references are going to be considered for
the consistent look of the usplash (if possible), the login manager screen,
the login splash and the desktop wallpaper.

In the Wiki[1] we describe this phase as:
"
Ponder consists entirely to determine the general artistic direction for a
given release. The result of this phase should be a relatively short list of
concepts that will lead the direction of all artistic elements. The following
is a brief list of questions to ask when determining artistic direction:

- What are the trademark concepts that the release wishes to communicate?
- What textures come to mind for illustrating this trademark?
- Is there an existing concept that this release is externally referencing?
"

On that Wiki page[1], there is a lot more information on the whole artwork
process and the Ponder phase. If you haven't read this page yet, please do so
as soon as conveniently possible.

One of the trademark concepts we're going to use is glass, as requested by
Mark. So examples of glass being used in several contexts, shapes and forms
will be a great start. Troy Sobotka has already provided some excellent
sample references and placed them on a Wiki page, available here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/EdgyTextures

Again, it's now open season for your ideas. We will try to moderate and
process the incoming submissions and I want you all to go ahead and provide
feedback to each other as well, so that we have an open discussion on what
ideas will work and which ones won't.

You can view this phase's status at any time on this page in the Wiki:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Specs/EdgyArtworkPlan/Ponder

I hope this e-mail provides a clear starting point. I know it might feel like
jumping off the deep for the first time, but keep in mind that we are
gathering and filtering artistic ideas so almost anything is welcome and
useful.

Thanks for reading this, I hope there will be some great texture and concept
submissions the next few days, and I'd be more than happy to answer any of
your questions related to this.

With kind regards,

I think this is very important. We need to establish a
clear idea as to how much branding is acceptable.

Perhaps during the proposal phase we can offer up a good
spectrum of similar ideas that feature branding through
to non branding in a good gradual progression.

It's also important to note that bright backgrounds just don't seem
to cut it in general due to the poor size and opacity of the shadow
underneath white text underneath desktop icons.

That nice rendition of the logo that Niklas made might be useful in
