[ubuntu-art] Logo Help Needed

2006-07-13 Thread Matthew Nuzum
I've been working on the bzr website. I'm not a true artist, but I can
fake it OK. I'm using the tango color palette. The current website
didn't use a logo, but one existed already (I didn't know about it
though). While creating the website I became inspired and made the
merge logo attached. I've also attached the branch logo.

Both are good, but each have a problem. The merge logo was created by
tracing a bmp of a merge sign. Therefore it looks lumpy. The branch
logo is a little too thin to be used as an icon or in areas where the
image needs to be small. Plus it doesn't use the tango palette, but
that's easy to fix.

I could really use a little help if someone has some time before the end
of the weekend. If anyone wants to touch up either of these logos,
recreate either of them or even create something from scratch, it would
be 100% welcome.

I've attached a png and a link to the svg if you feel inspired to help
out. I don't want this to be a big deal, so just contact me separately
if you want and are able to help.

Here's the SVG: http://newz.gotdns.com/tmp/bzr/BazaarLogoOptions.svg
(For some reason the branch doesn't show up when viewed in firefox, but
its there when you open it in Inkscape)

[ubuntu-art] 16 colour glassy

2006-07-13 Thread Niklas Weidel
As we discussed earlier, glassy effect in 16 colours could get interesting. Actually, what I noticed is that due to the limited palette of Ubuntu, it's pretty easy. Look at the attached example of my previous logotype which I simply downsampled to 16 unique colours - looks pretty good imo! No tweaking needed.
I'll look into if there's some from-the-scratch methods that might be useful for 16col, but as it looks we can go pretty advanced in the glossy effect as long as we keep to the restricted ubuntulogotype palette.

2006-07-13 Thread Niklas Weidel
Oh, here's the palette I've used. Actually the logo and effect uses 14 colours, as one is reserved for white and one for transparancy. So there's plenty of room for a background colour in the boot and a text colour. I attach both a photoshop palette and a windows .PAL. Sorry about my windowsness, but gimp simply isn't my cup of tea.

[ubuntu-art] PROPOSALS

2006-07-13 Thread Troy James Sobotka
I have created a proposal sub area of the incoming section
on the wiki.

Thus far, I have dropped Niel's early work on some logo props:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/EdgyProposals/LogoProposal

and the full contact that I have churned out:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/EdgyProposals/BackingTexturesProposal

For centralization, let's keep them under EdgyProposals.

If anyone can provide them, some good loose logo proposals would
be appreciated. Don't worry about fine tuning -- just get them
out the door.

Obviously we can comp against the default logo, but having some
glossy variations would be nice.

Here is Who_'s work, but it would be nice to see many more for
variations in the comping. (I moved it to the Edgy bin as well):

[ubuntu-art] PROPOSALS: Update

2006-07-13 Thread Troy James Sobotka
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/EdgyProposals/

Root page now shows subchildren as per the template.

I have probably missed several wiki pages that need to
be moved here. Sorry if I overlooked some pages -- I
was in a huge rush and must escape. Please migrate
accordingly. Thanks.

CHANGED:
Added Niklas' glossy samples. (Could Niklas perhaps
pinch off one or two with the default Ubuntu text
featuring the dynamic gloss effect? Thanks)

2006-07-13 Thread Niklas Weidel
Regarding Niel's work on logoproposal, I would say that the top left one has the best lighting - if it could be centered just a tiny bit so the last u has the same shade as the first. When one edge of a text like that is darker it offcenters it.

Bingo! With variants. Don't worry about polish.

Let's get a good set of design directions going first, then
we can work our way towards the production end of things.

At this development point, it is more useful to have many
variations. Various applications of your sheen would be
very useful to compare against each other. Perhaps even
using tones etc.

One side benefit of this is that at any point the
CC can check in and see our work. This is very important.

Finally, it is desperately important to leave a paper trail
for all the newer members, with design directions.

[ubuntu-art] kubuntu philosophy wiki page

2006-07-13 Thread Kenneth Wimer

Hi all,

I have created a wiki page (hurray for me!) concerning the philosophy
of the kubuntu artwork.

http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Documentation/KubuntuPhilosophy

Check it out and let me know what you think. I am sure that we could
tweak it a bit.

Bye,
Kenneth

[ubuntu-art] Closing the Theme Team application process for the Edgy Eft release

2006-07-13 Thread Frank Schoep

Hello fellow artists,

Today marks the end of the Theme Team application process which
started on the 3rd of July. Over the past ten days I've received
three team applications to form the following Theme Teams:

- Dash Theme, lead by Michiel Sikma (see below)
- Peace Theme, lead by Chuck Huber
- Tropic Theme, lead by Viper550

I've assembled a list containing the theme descriptions and which
elements each theme will provide on the following Wiki page:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Specs/EdgyArtworkPlan/ThemeTeams

If you want to work on one of these teams, you should now try to get
in contact with the team lead to try and work out your role within
the team if you hadn't done so already. Michiel Sikma is currently on
a holiday, I'll be standing in for him until he gets back around the
28th of July. So, if you want to contribute to the Dash Theme, I'm
the one you should get in touch with right now.

Along with the exciting event of the Theme Teams being assembled, let
me be the first to congratulate all theme leaders and wish them good
luck in getting some great themes ready for Edgy. In the next few
days we'll get in touch and start up the work.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated, as always. Reply to the list or
privately and let me know what you're thinking. Thanks for reading.

With kind regards,

Frank Schoep

Great Work...but you kinda mixed up the descriptions for Peace and
Tropic on the wiki page. I fixed it up, and gave Tropic my new official
description A nice Tropical theme, inspired by of all things: the
lights on my network router!...but of course the theme description in
the Gnome Theme Applet will be A nice Tropical theme, I'll leave out
the offical inspiration for the actual distribution, it will be one of
those I'll tell you if you ask me things...

[ubuntu-art] Wallpapers and logos

2006-07-13 Thread Niklas Weidel
I've been playing around a bit with both desktop ideas and the textlogo. I know we're in a basic-ideas-phase, but as usual I couldn't stop, so these are somewhat advanced.First off is a little wallpaper thing I got together, with strange little soft spotthings (looks like bloodcells sort of) and a reflective ubuntu-logo just for show.
http://www.weidel.se/gfx/desk1_withlogo.pngAnd without the logo. It has almost a painted feel. Wanted to keep it organic, a little strange and unique. The original blobs were generated by a filter which i've tweaked. It *is* a bit cluttered, i suppose, but I've found no good solution for that yet, and I'm quite convinced it's a habit thing when using the wallpaper. I have it on my desktop now and will see how it works.
http://www.weidel.se/gfx/desk1_nologo.pngHere's the textlogo. It's a somber look, not really shiny-gloss. If we want to opt for brighter colours, it could go bright like the previous logo, but it looks real strange with dark browns in those cases. Will try a brighter one later on.
http://www.weidel.se/gfx/textlogo.pnghttp://www.weidel.se/gfx/textlogo.psd - photoshop original for your tweaking enjoyment
Here's a little fractal wallpaper I've messed with. Not ubuntu-coloured yet, just a draft.http://www.weidel.se/gfx/Fractal1_1.pngSame one sombered down and coloured. Really like this one.
http://www.weidel.se/gfx/Fractal1_satin.pngAnother one from the same base (believe it or not), very non-intrusive and clothy and just a tad more interesting than a single coloured background. :) Still, I can't help but like it.
http://www.weidel.se/gfx/Fractal1_satin2.pngThat's it for me! Hope it might inspire someone. Let me know if you want PSD's for the wallpapers.

Awesome wallpapers, the last one is pretty nice! I might want to use
that one as the official wallpaper for the Tropic theme. But, I will
need it in Greyscale, 1600x1200 in order for me to make it into the
right colors (as it will grace most of the Tropic artwork, from Login
Screen to Desktop).
