[ubuntu-art] Matte and Gloss work

2006-08-26 Thread Who
Hi all,

I have done some Matte and Gloss work (well, it ended up as Swirls,
Matte and Gloss...)
I started with the logon splashes:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Specs/EdgyArtworkPlan/Produce/Incoming/WhoLsplash

And finally made two GDMS using one of the styles to test that it
'scaled' to a larger image - I think it does very well and that it
also keeps the simplicity and 'power' of the original GDM dscrren that
Mark said he wanted to keep...

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Specs/EdgyArtworkPlan/Produce/Incoming/WhoGDM

(in the course of it I changed my glossy logo, thoughts on the ones at
the ed vs the ones at the beginning?)

I'd love your opinions on it so I know which ideas to develop further...

Thanks,

Who

I like the one you selected for the GDM screens. There's a sizing
issue, where the "ubuntu" is too small relative to the logo, but the
"chiselled glass" look with the tight borders is very cool.

The GDM source SVG is on the wiki page :), just use that (look at thelayers dialogue if tehre is too much or too little on th screen)Seems like you might wanna make the 'ubuntu' text a little larger too :P

Who, I also like #14 and the top GDM screen. I wonder how it would
look in a bit more of a tan color instead of the off yellow color it
is now? Seems that yellow, and orange that we have for icons will
clash quite a bit. One thing I thought about on the GDM, is that if
you create a bit of shadow under the top horizontal line, and a bit
less than that over the bottom horizontal line, it would further the
illusion of being sunken(if that was what was intended).

Like you said, it mimics the simplicity and powerful statement of the
current design. It's just ubuntu!

Excellent work Who! My preferences are simple: The first splash and the first gdm theme :-)Splash 14 has been very popular, but my primary objection to it is that it is not as powerful matte/glass combination as fx 01 or 02 is. I still like 14, I just like 01 better :-) If people are so keen on 14, then why not 15 instead? The lighting is a bit more alive in that one...
Anyway, good work, cheers,Mikkel
