Integration with the rest of the Ubuntu project/community is a *good* thing. It seems to be working for the art team this release cycle.Speaking purely personally, I find mailing lists far easier to keep track of than forums. Everything arrives in my mail client, I don't have to visit a bunch of different websites to try and keep track of stuff.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Proposal : Ubuntu-Art forum.

2006-09-04 Thread Who
I check a few different forums on a fairly regular basis, and while I
appreciate the structure I find that it makes it very difficult to
have an idea of what the whole group is doing and I find it anoying to
have to look in so many places.

I like the way that I check one place, my inbox, for all the MLs I
read - if you find it too much then get a gmail account and set up
some labels - combined with conversation grouping this makes gmail
_perfect_ for monitoring lots of high volume lists...
One of the things at the artwork meeting we had after Dapper was that
people found it difficult to check so many different places. Given I
think that it is imporssible to eliminate the mailing list, this would
just add another place.

Thirdly, I don't know how many of the busy ubuntu-masters read this
list, but I would guess it makes it easier for those who are extremely
busy and only want/need to keep one eye on the team to check a forum
and see what they need...Time is a big issue and forums mean cheking
lots of subforums for relevant messages - mailing lists mean scanning
all the titles...

Brian's comments about using wiki/LP like the other projects are good too

Note that gnomethemes.org/forum is a good forum on art and theming.

 An Ubuntu-Art forum.

This is a text based on an idea I had when I joined ubuntu-art.

I modified it a month later, so that I wouldn't tell any lies :)

The general idea is an artwork forum, replacing launchpad, the wiki and the
 Mailing List.

It explains the difficulties for beginners and tries to solve those
 problems.

 Enjoy :)

 a ) Current State.

 - Register to launchpad.

 - subscribe to the mailing list.

 - Join the irc channel.

 - Register to the wiki.

This causes a lot of work to stay updated.

You'll have to check your mail, the wiki and launcpad.

Eventually even join the irc channel.

 b) Future State. ( With the forum )

 - subscribe to the forum.

 - Eventually subscribe to threads / forum sections.

 - Join the irc channel.

A forum is easier to join and to stay up-to-date.

 c) Goods.

 - Forums are more structured.

 - Its easier to join, attracts more new artists.

 - Easier to stay updated.

 - No more refering to wiki's anymore, just post the image.

 - Easier to post and find guides.

 - Discussions and feedback will be easier to track

 - Only one site to check.

 - Proposals, mockups are easier to publish.

 d) Bads.

The risk of spam, flaming, .. But that is also possible in the mailing list.

Feel free to add some :)

 e) Forum Layout.

Support : Questions about program functions can be found here.

Bugs : Current bugs in the artwork can be posted here.

Produce : Icons, wallpapers, *DMs, usplash', ... The real produce phase runs
 here.

Howto's and guides : User posted guides about making art or using
 programs,..

Incoming : Members post mockups, others revise it. Maybe even realise it.

Projects : New programs or projects can be introduced here.

 Calendar : The ubuntu-art Calendar.

Artwork Cafe: A place where artists can chill out after a hard day of work.

 f) Goal

The goal of this idea is really simple, attract more artists to join
 ubuntu-art.

And let them work more structured.

before I do I thought I'd ask your opinions.

You can see it here: http://huw.ugbox.net/UbuntuEvolve/

You can subscribe to wiki pages and launchpad pages, just like you
suggest to subscribe to forum threads, so in the end I don't see that
much difference?

Also, web forums don't keep status information about what you've read
already, which actually makes it really difficult to keep up-to-date.

Please no, a wiki isn't a discussion medium -- which is a good thing for
artwork.

Agree with Dennis here.

Also remember that the Wiki is a mandatory requirement to
integrate with Launchpad and Bazaar.

Form should follow function. As of now, our functioning
does not require expansion of the base set of tools. If we
hit critical mass regarding output, expansion will become
far more viable.

Looking to the future however, as the mailing list archives
will show, a CMS is a possibility to streamline the uploading
and organization of the team. To this end, imbrandon
has been working on getting an area up based on Drupal.

I cannot stress this enough -- we _must_ work within the
existing structure set forth by the Ubuntu establishment
if we are to be at _all_ effective. These factors were
considered early on and largely guided the process we have
today.

Sincerely,
TJS

Thanks to the great tips that Jan has offered here over
the past few posts, I updated the wiki page for GetInvolved.
Hopefully it will make it that much more easy to keep
track of the artwork related developments.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Documentation/GetInvolved

Thanks again Jan!

On a side note, if anyone out there is interested
in contributing to the wiki, please feel free to
update it where appropriate. If you feel the need
for a new page or set of pages, please locate them
under Artwork/Incoming and notify the list.

Sincerely,

I'd like to use them on my dapper box.
