I think we are all with you in agreement. Once the palette
is settled down and published, I think Frank intends to
slightly tweak the GTK / Metacity etc to bring more elements
into alignment. I don't think he will go so far as to be
using an image, but possibly a tonal alignment.

It simply wasn't an option until all the final issues
were resolved.

For kubuntu it's basically a shiny version of the dapper one, for ubuntu
it's shiny but has only the logo without the word 'ubuntu'. xubuntu
temporarily has the kubuntu one and edubuntu will have one tomorrow.

[ubuntu-art] Micro tweaks

2006-09-08 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
Looking at the new gdm, splash, and wallpaper I really like what I see! Great work guys.I have a few (constructive - I hope) comments. In both gdm and splash the ubuntu logo appears a bit like an external bit just placed on the image. I think it is because the border of the logo is too dark, or maybe it needs a hint of a drop shadow.
Another thing in the gdm; the logo looks a bit like it's invading the space of the ubuntu text string. I think raising the logo just a bit to create a slightly bigger gap (just a few pixels) would be desirable.
Cheers,Mikkel

I definitely agree about the length of the sound - I think both login
and logout sounds can use some trimming now that I've experienced
them in real life. On my (admittedly) fast machines the logout sound
is cut off after a few seconds because ALSA is stopped early on
shutdown.

I think that even with ALSA running the sound would still be playing
after the power is turned off so it must be shortened to match
shutdown speed improvements. The login sound is also a bit lengthy
and I think we can shorten it a bit. Expect this to be polished
further down the road.

I wanted to give you a heads up on the usplash - there is a design
going in tonight which is not really final nor polished so please do
not be disturbed by it. For me, it's just a placeholder for the
placeholder so to speak.

[ubuntu-art] Minor modification to the progressbar in ubunutlooks

2006-09-08 Thread Richard Stellingwerff
Hi guys and gals,

A few days ago Benjamin Otte (Company) sent me a nice patch for
ubuntulooks, which slightly changes the appearance of the progressbars
in Ubuntulooks.

The current progressbar renders squared (width=height) cells,
resulting in a partially rendered cell at the end of the bar when the
bar's width is not a multiply of a cell's width.

Benjamin's patch calculates a sensible width for each cell, so that
the bar contains only complete cells. The number of cells also varies
depending on the width. An example screenshot is located here:
http://www.stellingwerff.com/ubuntulooks/pb1.png .

My plan is to get this into edgy. I hope you guys like it.

Kind regards,
Richard Stellingwerff.

I've just made a 'fake screenshot' with my proposal and now you can see if you like it or not. I've copied the combo-box style and I've pasted over the panel. In my opinion, it makes Ubuntu look more integrated and makes a 'shiny' cool effect. Here's the link:
http://lasttrainhome.blogsome.com/images/panelproposal.pngAs you can see, the combo-box of the screenshot app has a divider between the two black arrows and the folder where you want to save the image. That could be perfect to separate the panel and the notification are for example. Please give me some feedback and criticize the idea!!!

2006-09-08 Thread Nathan Eckenrode
i got to say, that's a pretty neat image, although I am not certain if usplash
uses .gif yet, as far as I know there are a couple transformations which must
occur to the image before it can be used by usplash, the first of which is it
must be indexed into 16 colors.

This image may work really well with another boot splash called splashy.

I'm CC'ing the artwork mailling list since it seems appropriate.

I appreciate the fact that you stepped forward and voiced your
concerns on the artwork and sound theme, and I can understand that
the change of the overall look and feel of the operating system might
have been in a direction you didn't anticipate.

The artwork team has been working very hard for the past two months
to create the current uploaded design (thanks guys). We started out
by defining the artwork philosophy and narrowed down on directions
and finally produced various sets of artwork.

The current designs uploaded in Edgy are the work of Troy Sobotka
(troy_s), who has written a detailed motivation on his well-executed
design on the Wiki:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Specs/EdgyArtworkPlan/Produce/
Incoming/troy_s

The sound work was done by Peter Savage (cbx33) and has undergone
several revisions before being included as is, yesterday. The African
themeing is indeed evident but not over the top I think. Both the
sounds and artwork were designed with the Ubuntu philosophy and
history in mind:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Documentation/Philosophy

I hope this provides some insight and understanding for the current
designs. It's hard to "come up with something more neutral" since it
will take time to evolve new designs based on a different philosophy
or directions.

Even though you, and others, might not like the tone of the artwork,
I hope you do appreciate the time and effort that went into it to get
all elements in line visually as we focused hard on that aspect. Both
the sounds and artwork have been developed completely by community
members which I think is a huge step forwards in general and was one
of the goals I had.

Compared to the artwork in Dapper, we've also made huge progress
towards unifying the design for usplash (to be announced soon), GDM
theme, login splash and wallpaper. The current design has also a
strong visual link with the icon set, making everything blend in
together.

Although I simply can not offer a solution at this time which will
please everyone, I hope my e-mail puts things in perspective. If you
want to see in detail what the artwork team has done, please visit
the Edgy artwork plan page on the Wiki which contains a detailed
paper trail on decisions and concepts made:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Specs/EdgyArtworkPlan
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Specs/ArtworkProcess

Thanks for reading, I hope we can have a nice discussion on this.

With kind regards,

Frank Schoep

Hi everyone!I was looking to my ubuntu panel on Dapper and I think that the gray plain background doesn't have the same style that the human theme. At the same time I was reading some pdf's on evince and I looked at the style of the combo-box (zoom adjustment) and that style seemed a great background for the panel. What do you think about it? If it's a good idea I can do it this evening, but I prefer to wait a little discussion after doing it because now I'm in exams period and I don't have a lot of time. So I hope you like that idea because I find great!

MediaWiki keeps revision histories of _everything_, including images.
You can jump back to old revisions of images for comparison.

Not that this makes it a perfect CMS for artwork collaboration,

I agree too - I am forever making huge contact sheets of my work for
posting to the wiki so that the evolution is clear and peopel can
comment on different stages of the process. A usefull system for me
would be the ability to sumit many versions of a specific piece of
work, have it tile them, make a slideshow, order them and allow each
individual one to be commented on and discussed...
