i dont know if you no well mailman (i do), so, there is a good trick for
that kind of situation:

in the queue, there is on optional chekbox 'discard all messages marqued
defer' and defer is the default option. So, if there is many spam, and
just a few good eemails, you just have to mark good ones as "accept",
and then, apply all. with that method, i spend about 15 minutes to
managed the all queue.

Excuse me Mark, but the splash screen DOES follow the directions somewhat:

- It has a gradient in the top-left corner
- Burnt Edges
- Also Gloss
- Also, the wallpaper this is based off followed the guidelines nicely
as well.

But, it doesn't have the correct gradient colors...guess I'll have to
fix that up!

That's nice Viper, but it's completely different to the directions I've
given Frank and the art team to focus on for the Edgy release.

Please everybody, let's focus this list ONLY on the pieces we are
creating for the default theme of the Edgy release. If you want to
help, please read the page Frank wrote which documents the decisions
we've taken and the direction we are moving in, and contribute ideas
that are STRICTLY within those guidelines. This is your opportunity to
make Edgy rock, and to have your art in the release.

If you have totally different ideas please DO NOT post them to this
list between now and the release candidate, because they will just be
noise.

This is why I asked that there be additional mailing lists set up for
new proposals and alternative themes, but since nobody has done that we
need to keep this list clear of distractions.

Thank you,
Mark

Thanks for the details :)

I just thought I'd chime in to say that I have just started Uni - (it
seems at a very unfortunate time!) and I am pretty busy with all the
'getting started' stuff - no network connection in my room active yet,
etc.

I will try and do anything I can towars the ideas here, but my input
will not be nearly as high as I would like... I hoped that doing a lot
before I got to Uni would help but it seems the direction I took is
perhaps too different to reconcile with the new one quickly - If
anyone wants to try then by all means do! I put up all the source
material...

My final comment is that I made some visual tweaks to the logo that I
think improve/polish it without changing the style at all, they can be
found on all the logos in the work here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Specs/EdgyArtworkPlan/Produce/Incoming/WhoDefaultGDMAttempts/Revisions

Sorry about not being able to be active! Good luck,

Who

I appreciate your frustration Et -- but we must remember
that for a number of reasons, this cycle was more about
trying to establish a working relationship. Unfortunately,
as has been the case long before Dapper, the Ubuntu look
/ feel seems to get backburnered until it is _absolutely_
necessary to deal with it. This is probably a crossed
byproduct of a genuine lack of respect for the design
implementation process _and_ some extremely busy
schedules.

That said, we _must_ work within our constraints and attempt
to deliver if we are _ever_ to shake Ubuntu out of this
pattern. Giving up will in frustration will leave us
with exactly _nothing_ to build upon from here.

It is _exactly_ the hue in the 6.06 lsplash, of which there are
two. Also, people are bandying about the 'skin' comment
in a very loose manner.

The last time I checked, human skin comes in a few different
varieties -- we should probably be sensitive to that.

Already done, but I am still fighting with the SVG
rendering ability of GNOME when bumped up against the
Inkscape output. The browning around the corners was
the element that broke the native rendering. I will
ship it as soon as I get it resolved.

We have _NOWHERE_ to go here regarding colour,
unfortunately.

We have exactly TWO tones from the lsplash.

One tone is darker, one is lighter.

The one in the sample the light one.
If we go with the darker one, sabdfl will probably
not like it as he prefers the lighter one.
I would quote the countless mails, but I don't have
the time right now.

Again, we started out of the gate _without_
an adhered to palette.

So, if we sample DIRECTLY from the source image that
meets approval, it _is_ what it _is_.

Further along these lines -- the other tone is actually
in the yellowy hue. This results in the famous
'baby puke' colour. I would have done it in the darker
tones, but I am aware of sabdfl's preference for the
lighter one regarding GDM implementations.

It is simply not our decision.

Of course, we could also just pick colours at random
and integrate them into the Ubuntu palette. I think
we have already seen the result of that with Dapper's
work. Perhaps even getting a consistent colour palette
for Edgy is a success. Not exactly a huge step forwards,
but forwards it be.

This was the whole point of the _entire_ process all
along, which, unfortunately, was apparently undervalued.
Pick a reason / object / goal to project with the
design. Consider motifs / palettes / approaches that
might convey the meaning. Design. Get feedback
and proceed down a more refined path.

Art & Design 101. In this case, the preceding
elements would more aptly be described as Art &
Design 1.

The checkpoints were _NOT_ in there for the
artists / designers.

Sincerely,
TJS

I understand your concern with the pink shade, that's why I wrote
Troy's current version might be a "wee bit too pink", but on my
(admittedly, Apple) screen the color of Troy's GDM theme matches the
highlight of the Dapper login splash very closely.

This leads to the idea of trying to mimic the login splash regarding
the two color layout: adding a darker tone to the bottom left half
and keeping the current color for a overlying curve.

When I'm done with some other Ubuntu artwork-work, I'll definitely be
trying and submitting some variations.

Quite the contrary :-) We're definitely looking for the more pinkish
shade of the spectrum in new artwork. The directions Mark has given
for the end-sprint are quite clear and are inspired by the Dapper
login splash which has this pink shade running through it.

If you read the directions again, you'll see that Troy's work is
definitely on the right track, it might be a wee bit too pink, but
it's coming close to what we're looking for:

That is coming along nicely I must say. It's definitely something
I'll pick up to "polish" a bit if you don't have the time to do so.
Some things I'd try adding would be the "burnt edges", e.g. a small
gradient to a darker tint at the edges like in the lsplash and trying
some gloss on the bottom bar.

Overall, I think it's a very good attempt at improving Dapper's GDM
theme to fit in with the lsplash. The gloss over the logo fits in
with the trademark curve (I wouldn't have expected otherwise from
you) and it runs nicely across both the circle of friends and the
text logo, all the while retaining the legibility.

Thanks for submitting this!

Frank
