Hi Alper!
Actually, downloading is the same as saving if you think about it, just
from a remote location.
The reason we went for a hard drive in tango-icon-theme and
gnome-icon-theme is because we thought it's such a seldom used medium
these days (14 year old kids don't know what it is :) ). It made more
sense ten years ago when you actually used to save your data on floppies
I guess.
I agree that it's a tricky situation though (since people are used to
see the floppy symbol etc.) and to some extent the instant-save model
used by apps like tomboy and others could make more sense.

Reflecting the cursor onto the widgets should be possible. The theme engine
gets a pointer to a gdk window on which it can gdk_window_get_pointer in the
draw_* functions. As always the devil is in the details, and I expect this
to be pretty hard to perfect.

It can and works flawlessly well on my computer (nvidia fx5900xt). But I
think it requires Pixel Shader 2.0 or something similar.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Nice Button Concept

2007-11-26 Thread Dylan McCall
I agree, that is a really nice looking button!

Another detail that I think really makes a difference with the visual
experience are those dotted lines that appear around widgets, indicating
what is selected (and can thus be controlled with the keyboard). Really
useful when tabbing, and it's definitely good to know what is selected, but
the current dotted lines are very obtrusive and just plain ugly. Even if
they just disappeared / faded away after a moment, it would look a lot
better, but the best solution would be if there was a way of reflecting the
cursor position within the current visual style. Is that something which can
be handled by themes, or will we have to go give the Metacity people a
talking to?

In the panel; yes. Using a transparent png works really well. These days all
panel apps behave quite well with transparent panels.

Window border: Yes and no. I don't know if Compiz can do blur at an
acceptable performance. Each time I've enabled blur in the past it has
crippled the performance. Maybe it has changed, but I doubt it.

I am not sure if transparent widgets are possible. The latest gtk+ release
added widget-level composition, but afaik no engine is using it (or if that
is even possible), and I don't know how viable it is. Maybe some hacker with
a little time on their hands should do a quick dirty hack to test this out.
It is really not that hard to hack up Murrine or some other engine[1].
Unfortunately I have no time atm.

Mikkel

think of a "download" folder or something like that, when they see the icons

Keep experimenting. When Ken comes back from his meeting he'll know the
direction we're going with artwork. If a dark theme is chosen, your
experience using less-than-perfect dark themes will help achieve dark theme
bliss when we actually go to the mat.

Ok, first of all I want to thank you for your great feedback, guys! It makes
me happy to see you striving for improving my mockup. :)

Referring to Troy i must say, that i find it neither rude nor offending in
any way. I appreciate negative criticism as much as praise. I want to thank
Troy explicitly for his effort of writing his appropriate questions.

I want to answer them one by one:

1) I don't think that those glossy effects went out of style yet. I would
rather say that they are more popular than anytime else right now. You can
take Apple as a good example, that was the first precursor of that style.

2) You are absolutley right, green doesn't really fit in the color schemes
ubuntu used in the recent past. But when i started to design my mockup, I
wanted to use a color which spreads a good atmosphere - and green does this
way better than brown.

3) The wallpaper was only a random choice of mine. I picked it because i
didn't want to take one of those regular ubuntu wallpapers. I could use
anything else instead of it. :)

4) Well, I've seen some custom themes with variously colored logos of
ubuntu, so I thought that it wouldn't be a problem, if I made it greenish,
in order to make it fit better to the background. However, you are right, I
will take care of keeping the standard logo in further versions in the
future.

5) I unfortunately don't know much about the technical coding stuff that is
behind a theme. Thank you for making me aware of this. I will take care of
this, too.

6) It doesn't have clear ubuntu-based message yet - that's correct, but I
hope that it will develop one in the duration of further work. :)

I hope that I answered all of these correctly (for my own sake ;)) and would
encourage all of you to help me improving it in the same way you already
did.

The next ToDo's:

- changing the green color scheme to orange
- modifying or removing the transparency
- making the lower taskbar look more ubuntu-like
- implanting some gui-icons to make it be a real mockup.
