[ubuntu-art] gtk theme

2008-03-03 Thread Kenneth Wimer
Hi all,

I guess that everyone noticed the change in gtk theme (we are using murrine at
the moment). I also included a clearlooks theme as well and we'll test that
in a couple of days). Both themes definitely need improvement if they are
going to replace Ubuntu Looks which, although it does have minor bugs, has a
definte look and is quite well polished. With an eye to the future, here is a
list of +'s and -'s for each theme. In many cases the -'s can be easily
solved ...feel free to help :-)

  Human Ubuntu Looks (#1):
   - lines between menu bar, toolbars and windows are bad; but we don't
have to get rid of them just yet
+ we like the obviously ticked checkboxes and radio buttons
+ and that the tick from the checkbox is larger than the box
   - toggle button doesn't share the obviousness
+ liked the markers in the progress bars
+ liked the inset tray look of sliders
+ liked the filled insides of sliders
+ liked the prelight colour of scrollbars
+ liked tab colours and no gradient
+ selected/active light orange bg (menu's, etc) color is perfect

   Human Clearlooks (#2):
   - menubar different colour to everything else
   - gradient buttons instead of glossy
   - no prelight of scrollbars
   - no colour inside sliders
   - checkboxes not obviously checked
+ but toggle buttons are much more obvious
   - don't like tab gradients
   + but colour is ok
   - progress bars look like tanks, no markers

   Human Murrine (#3):
   - lines between menu bar and toolbars, and toolbars and rest of
     window; not urgent to remove
? menu bar is very strange
+ but the menus themselves look great with the gutter
   - quite square in shape, rounded is more pleasing to the eye
   - progress bars are tanks, no markers, and not inset
   - sliders also not inset
   + but filled
   + obviously checked
   - but white
   - toggle button isn't obvious at all, quite nasty in fact
+ tabs have no gradient and gutter colours
   - no scrollbar prelight
   - entire scrollbar coloured

[ubuntu-art] meeting Thursday

2008-03-03 Thread Kenneth Wimer
Hi all,

It is time that we finally have a meeting as there are lots of things to
discuss. I suggest this weekend Saturday, the 8th of March. Having it on the
weekend might allow more people to attend. Perhaps sometime later in the UTC
evening to accomodate more people in the Americas?

Likely topics include:

 * GDM: getting the bg inline with the wallpaper; new icons

 * GTK: tweaking the gtk themes and discussing clearlooks vs. murrine

 * DESKTOP: Wallpaper tweaks. Discussing current state, ideas for moving
forward

 * ICONS: Needed! Update icon in Human style for panel; Scale and Expose
icons; General state of human refresh

 * 8.10: Discuss current ideas, how to move forward

...send me your ideas for other topics

As I explained in my previous email

suggested some changes to Human-Murrine.

In this two days I made other changes and and they explain better my

I don't know if it can be to help the work or it can be considered.

It seems as though these comments are based on an older version of clearlooks.
You will need to the latest clearlooks version for some of the items to be
fixed. The gtkrc is calling variables that do not exist in the old versions.
See comments below.

 - don't like tab gradients
 + but colour is ok
 - progress bars look like tanks, no markers

 - In window list in the bottom panel, active window is too high
contrast, giving the feeling that there is something that needs your
attention. Windows that do need your attention are given just the most
subtle of color variations from the other inactive windows making it
easy to miss windows trying to alert you.
 - (my opinion) The orange cap on the active tab of a tabbed control
has a much thicker border than the murrine - imho, the murrine's thin
top border looks a little nicer.

 Human Murrine (#3):
 - lines between menu bar and toolbars, and toolbars and rest of
   window; not urgent to remove
? menu bar is very strange
+ but the menus themselves look great with the gutter
 - quite square in shape, rounded is more pleasing to the eye
 - progress bars are tanks, no markers, and not inset
 - sliders also not inset
 + but filled
 + obviously checked
 - but white
 - toggle button isn't obvious at all, quite nasty in fact
+ tabs have no gradient and gutter colours
 - no scrollbar prelight
 - entire scrollbar coloured

 - Scrollbars are too high contrast (try using eclipse or another
program with lots of scrollable regions)
 - Something glitchy about the transparent window borders, most
noticably the bottom border.
When two inactive windows bottoms are vertically alligned and
slightly overlapping the transparency can cause it to look like the
top window has something wrong with it. I'll try to capture a
screenshot.
 - Inactive window titlebar transparency is too transparent. Ideally
there could be a non-transparent blur around the text to make it more
readable when multiple windows are layered. Currently it looks messy.
 - too little contrast between active and inactive windows in the
panel's window list.

All three have various problems in firefox 3. Is it possible to have
transparent regions for the buttons? Human clearlooks' buttons look a
little nicer than the murrine. The white squared corners kind of ruin
the effect.

I saw some screenshots somewhere where the default button had a bit of
a prominent outline color causing it to stand out nicely. By default
button I mean when you have several buttons to choose from and one
will be the default if you press enter. It usually has some kind of
outline and emboldened text. In murrine I don't *think* there's an
outline at all. In human clearlooks there definitely is no outline. In
human there is a slightly darker outline compared to non-default
buttons. I have a general rule of thumb in my designs that things that
are important should not use subtle differences to set them apart. I
use subtilty for power-user types of things.

Re: [ubuntu-art] gtk theme

2008-03-03 Thread Dylan McCall
Sorry, second time I've posted this thought here, but I think the detail
has too big an impact to be ignored.

+ For Human Clearlooks: Selected widget marker is very visible, which is
good for accessibility. It also blends very well with the theme by
taking the unusual move of not using a black dotted line, but a gummy
rectangle. The black dotted rectangle to mark selected widget has been
the norm for eternity, and really looks terrible. Unfortunately, certain
things (eg: gnome-panel) still have the dotted line for some reason, but
if you play around with a check box or just tabbing through a window,
the difference is very visible. I think that this is good for drawing
attention to the possibility (that GTK makes tabbing through windows
magically possible with every application under the sun!), and also acts
as a nice bit of decoration to draw special attention to the widgets
that are selected by default. Otherwise, when somebody is unaware of the
keyboard shortcuts and has not noticed that a particular widget is
selected, bad things can happen! For example, (granted, this is a long
stretch) somebody could accidentally restart his computer by pressing
Enter while reading the Updates require a restart message. More
realistically, somebody who relies on those keyboard shortcuts really
has to hunt to find the location of the standard dotted line, while the
gummy rectangle is clearly visible on first glance.

Bye,
-Dylan McCall

I agree, that does cause the button to stand out and looks better than
the dotted rectangle. That was what I was expecting to see for the
default selected widget (referred to in my previous e-mail).

To add to my previous list (this isn't related to Dylan's comment),
the Murine's progress bar is using black text on a dark
orange/orange-brown bar which is somewhat low contrast:

I think we should use a similar GTK theme, maybe without stripes. I
have a gtkrc with no stripes here in local.
I think should fit the wallpaper..
