Too Debian like -- only has 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% incrementals.

I much prefer to see 1-100% with 1% incrementals.

If you throw this in LP I recommend you use BZR to manage it and use
example-look as the basis for the package.

https://launchpad.net/example-look

This was basically what i was gonna do for anyone who got enough for a
complete theme together.

ps: Can we insert the project in launchpad (like clear intrepid)? Is it
a good idea? I think that we can better develop the theme.

2008-05-14 Thread Michael McKinley
Some thoughts:
 * I'm not a huge fan of the main background color of windows being
very colorful - I think it can be distracting.
 * I'd tone down the transparency somewhat (or blur the area beneath
the transparency)
 * I don't think that the widgets blend well with the rest of the
theme - the buttons seem like they were tacked on as an afterthought
 * I like the revamped menu icon a lot and the inbuilt search field,
but I'd stick with having the applications-places-system as 3 separate
menus
 * The icon theme in the "places" window is really nice
 * I'd consider making the notification area icons monochromatic - I
like the way it looks and I think it's a direction we should take for
the Intrepid theme

I hope I don't sound too harsh, I just want Intrepid to look the best it can.

Wow nice work man! We (read me, don't know the others) want you to keep
up the good work and if possible further polish the theme (replace gnome
icon with ubuntu logo). When you think you are done in a certain degree
(say version 0.1 or smth else) send me the theme and I will include it
as default one in New Wave.

I don't see these awful dotted selection in the top bar, but I think this is
the kind of things we can't remove, it can be useful. But it could be nice,

Well userChrome.css no but the gtkrc file - yes. Just comment out the
part with the bg_pixmap in the menubar style.

Don't know. Ask thunderbird devs why is the menu so big and tottaly
different than the rest of the system.

Elementary icons seem to be much better than the kamel and the Human
(bad thing is they are blue)

Btw please everybody check this out:

The firefox-fix using the userchrome.css file works just fine, when having the
traditional menubar-layout.
But with my setup

http://fruchtsalat.uni.cc/res/firefox.png

the menubar still is corrupted.
Could you make the fix more general or is there a possibility for me to adapt
the userchrome.css in some way?

Also for Thunderbird, the userchrome.css for firefox doesn't have an effect
(light grey strip on the bottom of menubar, little bit smaller than in my
firefox-screenshot).

I was looking through some icon sets the past few days, and liked the

Kamel icon-set
http://www..gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Kamel+icons?content=59006

and the Elementary icon-set

http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Elementary+Icons?content=73439

best. Problem is, that there are many icons missing. But maybe they can be
completed until the next LTS or mixed with other sets.

Cheers

I agree. For me (I always supported this) the best way is use murrine.
I want try to rewrite the gtkrc for murrine svn.
What do you think?

Secondly, we will should start talking about color palette that we want
use. I think that is very important if we want that the theme can be
used as default.

it's useful for tabbing through items for sure, but it doesn't need to
look like a glitch to provide such user feedback, lest of all be present
all the time. perhaps if anything, TABKEY without a window in focus
should invoke that dotted line.

See what I have found on the net:

http://federkiel.wordpress.com/2008/03/12/gtk-30-getting-serious/

The theming part is very good so I think that murrine with its rgba
patch is definitely going to be the future of GTK. So New Wave is going
to use it. Do you agree?

I'm not sure it is mandatory to have monochromic icons for applications. I
think we can just have them for "information icons", such as sound level,
network status, battery level, available updates, alerts, maybe bluetooth...
If we make icons just for 'some' applications, it will really look bad if
the user adds "unexpected" ones in the notification area.

About orange: I totally agree with you, and that was my intention to choose
an orange icon theme, and have some orange controls.

There is still mch work to go, but I think we go a good direction.

So, I didn't get any reaction. What do you think about this:

I know the widgets are not in there, this mockup is pretty rough but the
side bar looks much better IMO.

Yes it is because Firefox does not support different colors for
selected/unselected menu items. Thus the main color is white so that
when you click a menu it still to be readable (remains white). I'm not a
css/Firefox expert but if there is one, he is welcomed to help on this
issue.

We will keep this thing up to the end (btw in the engine we are using
now there are no dotted lines at all) and when it comes the time for
change we will change it (it will not be hidden though).

I agree that a list of thing that should be changed or fixed should be
made at the wiki. Thus will allow people with the necessary knowledge to
help if they can.

did you ever try to use your desktop without mouse ?

while its ugly and i agree it souldnt be there by default, it has a
reason to still exist (probably file a bug to make it switchable in an
a11y setting or so)

If we keep a list of things we would like to change in the theme engine
and/or Gnome stack there is a better chance that people with the right skill
will pick them up. Ie *not* things like "change the whole UI metaphor", but
small things like "change the ugly separator for the system tray" and stuff
like that. The point is that the items should also be manageable by aspiring
hackers to maximize chances of getting resolutions.

I for one would like to address some of these items, but I simply do not
have the time these days. If the list is kept updated, professional, and
clean there is a chance that we just might get resolutions over the course
up to the next LTS.

Cheers,
