Maybe a horizontal peak meter on the one without the logo?

The layout without logo seems more relaxed.

The shadow of the 2nd version isn't sitting right.

Gradient of 2nd version is happier :)

In both cases, I think the highlights on the edges of the openings for
the faders are too intense (they attract attention to themselves, but
should only support).

The fader knobs are gorgeous, btw.

I updated the wiki with the small sizes for preferences-desktop and I
uploaded a new version without the ubuntu logo.

Inkscape is the most mature open-source vector graphics application, I
think. Sodipodi is history.
For bitmap editing, there's GIMP. Or Krita, perhaps

Nowadays, it's common to create icons solely with Inkscape and to avoid
additional bitmap editing.

Well, there's no Kubuntu presence on this list, it seems. You should
contact the people behind Kubuntu by their own means, if that's your
area of interest.

This is a good place for asking questions.

I would like to invite you to have a look at

That's *totally* welcome. One thing I've mentioned a couple of times is
that one way people can help is getting the Oxygen set into our Breathe
template. :)

I'd say take your time. No rush to get it out. We're under no deadline. ;)

Currently, for the Breathe project
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/BreatheIconSet/Submissions), we're
using Inkscape. GIMP is also common.

Though I personally like the use of open source tools in the creation of
art for open source projects it's not a requirement at all.

I'm the lead artist for Ubuntu Studio and I've always made a point to be
part of this main community. Though there isn't much from the other
*buntus, there's nothing keeping then away. I'd love for them to be
active here.

1) It is awesome that you are considering moving to o.s. programs. I do
not feel that this should be a requirement, as it will potentially
reduce the amount of people, that may be available to work on the art.
3) In addition to this list, I also refer/defer to the IRC channel.
