[ubuntu-art] Plymouth splash screen is too flat

2010-04-10 Thread V N
The current Plymouth boot screen is perfectly flat; it's exactly one color
across it's entire height. This makes it look very ugly on some monitors.
I've experimented with some other backgrounds, and I found that:

- Adding a slight gradient helps immensely while still keeping the solid
purple color.
- Adding a gradient all the way to black at the bottom of the screen also
looks better, but may be a bit extreme.
- Using the default wallpaper looks best, but has contrast issues with the
white text
- Darkening the default wallpaper greatly increases contrast without majorly
harming appearance

Could the splash screen be changed to use some kind of non-flat background
instead?

[ubuntu-art] New Communty Themes Wiki Page

2010-04-10 Thread j_baer

As promised I started to to update the Community Themes wiki page. The
current content is just to see how the page flows.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/JohnBaer/SandBox

I must warn you it is different as IMO the audience has changed and the
requirements.

New audience - I was pleasantly surprised to see this page linked to the
installation of the community-themes package using the Software Center.
IMO this is spot on! My vision of the page is informative to the user who is
interested in installing the package (viz. new requirement).

At the end of the page I envision a short walk through of the installation
process targeted toward the new user.

Issues:

- What is the desired image sized of the screen shot? IMO one is enough.

- Is the general format Ok? I removed the Artwork banner as it did not seem
to fit.

- The logo is my attempt to blend with the new Ubuntu look (e.g. fish)
assuming the appearance of the wiki will not change. Other ideas are
welcomed.

If this designed is agreed, I hope the respective authors will supply screen
shots and text. Otherwise I will do the best I can. : )

My desire is to have this complete and ready by the release candidate.

John
