[ubuntu-art] New icon needed: Software Updater

Hi folks

We have a usability problem in Software Updater (formerly known as
Update Manager).

The problem is that when the updates dialog appears by itself, there's
no visual clue that this is an official Ubuntu thing. In Ubuntu 12.10
and earlier, the icon is just a brown box with an orange arrow. And in
Raring right now, it's an A with a progress bar and arrows around it
- -- again, nothing obviously to do with Ubuntu, and a bit of a non
sequitur too.

So, it would help if we had a new icon, one which obviously
communicates that these are official updates for Ubuntu.

One possibility that I've suggested is an airdrop -- a wooden box
being lowered by parachute, where either the box or the parachute (but
not both!) features the Ubuntu logo.
http://www.google.com/search?q=airdroptbm=isch Maybe you have other
ideas too.

Please post your proposals here, or DeviantArt, or Imgur, or wherever
suits you, and link to them in a reply here.

Let's get something really classy into Ubuntu 13.04.

Thanks!

If you search for update in Google Images you get mostly variations of
spinning arrows. The parachute idea is nice, but maybe it would be
better to stick to what the user is used to and try to get something
nice using those arrows.

[ubuntu-art] The new ubuntu update icon submission.

2013-01-23 Thread Matthew Ames
Hi,

I've come up with a very quick and dirty idea, which would need better
attention to detail.

I started with the idea of +

A plus, in terms of updates, means extra. It's what it was before, but a
little bit extra.

In terms of shopping, the plus could be used to express getting more.

Attached is the logo I created.

Matthew.

Airdrop idea rox. We should go this way. Imho those + or arrows are too usedup
by others.
I'll make some projects when i get home, which is about 3hours.

Yeah, that's a nice idea. And then the parachute can be rocking from side
to side to show loading or processing time...

Re: [ubuntu-art] Self-announcement

2013-01-23 Thread 刘大理
Hi:
Not really, but I'm creating one, see http://oicgallery.wix.com/gallery
with some random works I've done long ago, I'll update it later.
Right now I'm still working on improving photoshop skills. I guess I'm
really not good enough to do the designs, I just like ubuntu a lot and try
to see if there's anything to help.

Cheers

Dale

Hello! I have joined the mailing list for a while but I havn't
done anything yet. I like to design user interfaces and how to
interact with it, but what I can do is very limited. designing
icons or some simple bottons is capable for me, i think I love
ubuntu and I wish to contribute its development as much as I can.
P.S. I am still a highschool student, and i am chinese.

 Hey there, and welcome.

Do you have a portfolio or gallery online of previous work you have done?

 Cheers
